Thanks for confirming James. Further tinkering now seems to show that just engaging the compressor switch adds a little brightness boost regardless of the knob setting - once I was aware of this overall lift, turning the knob does then apply a more subtle compression to the “lifted” sound. Switching it off then returns to a slightly softer overall tone. Which makes me think that there’s some kind of gain make-up going on under the hood when engaged (much like a conventional compressor pedal would do) - it’s clearly advanced since the more blunt-edged compression on my Flightcase!

It sounds as if you have the earlier Suitcase (in the 4B cab), rather than the later one, which is a C4 with built in amp. The cab sizes for both combos are identical to the plain cabs, so volume, porting, etc are already correct. You just need to mask off the hole where the amp panel was and you're good to go. I'd take Bill's advice and wire them series/parallel. Those PJB drivers are 8 ohms. The 4B is claimed to be good for 300W and the C4 for 400W (I have both and think 400's a little optimistic. The drivers are the same, so 300 is safer). Your Tone Hammer will be fine to use with them, especially if it's the 500. The 700 might push them a bit at high volume, but it'll be obvious from the sound if they're struggling.

I think I've redeemed myself. Start again then... Made a better jig which actually works the correct way round... First cuts... And then changed the jig to do the short sides, et voilà That's more like it! Crappy first attempt above for comparison. Then I guess when you write on it with a Sharpie, it becomes official... The only thing I have to consider is that my top bearing router bit is a bit fat for the corners of the pickup (it's OK for the mounting lugs), had to cut them out after the fact on the template, so going to have to figure out how to solve that. But progress is progress, and I'm much happier with this second attempt at the template. One final piece of paranoia - I checked that the neck fits when the pickup is mounted - it has a 21st fret overhang... Phew! That is approximately where the neck pickup of a Peavey T-40 goes with regard to scale length.

I don't like painted necks. I get uncomfortable with non matching brands on amps and cabs. Basses with a matching headstock sound better than ones without Nobody likes bass solos (well... nobody likes mine. Especially not me) Any bass that's been refinished must be good because somone kept it and repainted it rather than sell it and buy a similar one a different colour Vintage basses that don't show much wear are probably not great since nobody wanted to play them a lot

I find screws in basses that aren't actually screwing anything down weird so they go in a cupboard. I've never lost one when time to sell the bass. I find the covers (for me) serve no practical use despite liking the aesthetics. I even ordered an official Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V chrome cover all the way from Holland once just to install it and take it off within weeks and hide in the cupboard with the screws.
