Takamine TB10 or DB10? What’s the difference?
Rob MacKillop replied to Rob MacKillop's topic in Bass Guitars
Many thanks, Hellzero. I had not heard of the Leduc U-Basse. It sounds very interesting. However, I have just ordered the Godin A5 Ultra…it should arrive on Tuesday. If that fails, I’ll look for the Leduc! -

I think vintage instruments can get better with age to the extent that over time owners might have gotten their faults addressed by a luthier. I've played countless vintage Fenders over the years, some were enjoyable, some less so, but they didn't sound other-worldly compared to a nice new one. The sound just isn't that different. It's more the feel and what that gives you. I don't think there's much milage in their electronics maturing like wine and improving. The pickups do tend to get more microphonic over the years and I suppose that will change the tone a bit.

Depends on the dimensions. If the driver in the photo is a 15, the cab looks to be about 19" wide by 12" deep by 24" high. That gives a cubic capacity of around 3.1 cu. ft, although the volume of the ports (which look a little large for the size Bill suggests above) will reduce that. It probably won't be that far off and certainly better than 4.7 cu. ft.

Very true, drummers in small venues set the level for the band and it’s tough getting them to drum at a lower volume especially if they are rock drummers !

I agree, on both counts. I'm sure that they selected her because her undoubted abilities (demonstrated by having worked with the great Jeff Beck, etc), also knowing that it would help to avoid the direct comparisons with Peart that asking a big name prog drummer would have done. However, it may have a secondary benefit and have a marginally positive impact on the misogynistic climate amongst certain sections of American society.

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
basexperience replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
Currently building a Bass Filter board to plug into my main pedalboard as an extension (using the Stomp loop). Some great sounds on here, and the chance to bring my original Q-tron back into use. That SZ funk face sounds killer. -
I don't think Rush having a female drummer is any kind of a token gesture or social statement. It is, however, a way of circumventing comparisons with Neil Peart. I've been watching Anika Niles a bit on YT. She's obviously a very technical player and will easily be able to play those songs. She's the right kind of drummer for Rush. The wrong kind of drummer would have been a groove-based player, like most famous session drummers.

In the end you either know how to play a low volume gig or you don't. It seems if volume is such a huge issue the "first" thing to ditch would be the acoustic kit. Use a Cajon player or electronic kit, that brings the volume way down. Maybe it's different on your side of the pond but in most live music venues I go to it's the PA system that is always too loud. DJ's as well. In a small venue there is no need to mic anything unless your drummer has a weak foot. When everything is direct you are totally at the mercy of the person running sound and on the average the skills of most sound "techs" is pretty subpar. Our sound tech works for a big sound company in NYC and he will tell you that most techs barely mix. They are level setters.

What I indignant reverse misogyny baloney is that ? I think what you mean is that you don't feel the drummers gender is relevant, and feelings are not facts. You have no more evidence that gender isn't relevant than I have that it is. If your so sure it isn't relevant tell us why. I'm genuinely interested to hear why you feel the need to forbid discussion on the subject.

Would also have to see it on a strap, some basses which look pretty awful on a stand actually look good when being played. That's all that matters really.

A surprising amount of expertly built basses which strive for individuality end up looking jarring and wonky, almost like the person who can craft a seriously high end instrument isn't neccessarily the same person who can come up with a visually appealing design. Off the top of my head Shuker and Iceni can do both but a lot of luthiers would benefit from getting someone else in to design a body shape and cohesive theme.

I've gone and done it again....... This time it's a Mesa Boogie

Bigger casters arn't gonna help me get it up these mothers. My music room/studio is above the garage, it was bad enough trying to get a Laney RB8 combo up there, so bad I had to get my son to move it for me. It's got to be chop it or swap it, I did check with the wife but was told I couldn't keep it in the bedroom 😞 -

One thing that I do like is the use of rolling saddles. It makes more sense to me than having rollers built into the nut on a conventionally strung bass.

No, the baffle board is 28" x 20.5". Too small for 2 x 15. So a good 3015 cab would be something akin to the one in the pic here:

I don't think that Rush fans are renowned for their prejudice, but the fact that a female can score such a high profile rock gig without anyone with any credibility suggesting that it is a 'woke' gesture (or whatever) is great. The tour will (initially at least) be focussed on American soil, where there are plenty of right-wing commentators with very misogynistic attitudes who are dominating mainstream media. I think that overall it is a positive thing. And, as I said on the other Rush thread, it does ensure that there will be at least one woman at a Rush show!
