silverfoxnik Posted December 13, 2007 Share Posted December 13, 2007 Hi Folks, Having enjoyed seeing some great basses in this section over the last 7 months or so, I thought it was about time I did the same and put my lot up for perusal. Just to say that your 'viewing pleasure' will be greatly enhanced if you can manage to whistle the Tubular Bells theme whilst at the same time, read aloud the names of the basses in a very pretentious English accent in the style of Viv Stanshall To get the ball rolling, my first ever gigging bass which still works but not very well.. Hondo II Ricky copy circa 1977 I did a lot of gigs with this bass in the late 70's so it's got huge sentimental value.. Next up, my main gigging bass at the moment, Fender Roscoe Beck V Very heavy for long gigs, but the neck is great to play and it's just a brilliant sounding bass! Currently acting as back up to the RBV, Lakland DJ5 Bought this from P-T-P here on Basschat in the summer.. Great vintage Jazz tones.. much too good to be a back up really. My two vintage basses, 1978 Wal Pro 2e & 1984 BC Rich Eagle, which I'll never sell, especially the Wal! The BC Rich is an awesome sounding bass and plays like a dream.. The Wal is my all-time favourite bass. And lastly, two 'cheap as chips' copies that satisfy my completely pointless need for a P bass & a Jazz clone. This was bought from The Butler here on Basschat and has a Kent Armstrong pick up that sound pretty good to my ears.. Bought this for £89 for a bit of fun, gave it a set-up and it's suprisingly good to play! Funny how it goes like that sometimes? Being sensible (which I'm not), I really should pare this lot down to 5 basses. But it's great fun having a P Bass clone, Jazz clone and a Ricky clone plus a thru-neck design in the collection (which the BC Rich is), as well as the two quality 5s for gigging along with the Wal. BassBod Posted December 13, 2007 Share Posted December 13, 2007 Thank you for saying the RBV is on the heavy side - that's eased the GAS for a while (I'm having the same experience with an Alembic V - fantastic bass, but better if you sit down!) I only ask because some of the better quality Rick clones had fake Grovers, but I've never seen them on a Hondo. Can I also ask if there's anything stamped on the neckplate, and is the body made from ply or real wood? Sorry for the inquisition - but I have a rather unhealthy obsession with these things - probably comes from not being able to afford a real Rick! Jon. Shockwave; we definitely do need more BC Rich lurve on this forum as you said before.. They are very underrated basses that's for sure.. BB - glad to have helped cure the GAS though hopefully, not for too long! The Wal is heavy too so I'm pretty used to "a decent chunk of timber" around my neck, but invariably, the heavy basses I've had over the years have all sounded great, so it's been worth it! The Lakland is relatively light but still has a great tone too so that will help a bit. Jon, you are spot on sir! The tuners on my Hondo are unbranded Grover copies that came from another Ric clone. I bought them here on BC earlier this year (along with some other bits & bobs) in order to repair the much inferior original stock Hondo ones that were in a complete mess! The body of the Hondo is ply wood sadly and as for the neck plate, I'll have to check it when I get home later.. It's great to have an expert on these on the forum because there are so many Ric clones around these days all of differing qualities... Mine doesn't play that well any more and the electronics need a bit of work but I have a replacement scratchplate with all the pots that I could just use instead if I can find some time.. [/quote] Thanks Matt, I'd love a L2500 to be honest but you're giving Nig too many ideas, especially as he's got a G&L 5 for sale at the moment!! In an ideal world, I'd add a G&L to my collection plus, I've always wanted a Status Groove 5 for some reason too... But that would be just plain greedy, wouldn't it? Thanks Peter! Funny enough, I didn't think the Wal would get much response from this post because it's the older Pro model and not the Custom version, but happily, people seem to like it.. The reason I was interested is that Hondos are a bit of a mystery - most of them (probably including yours) were made by Samick in Korea, but in the late 70s / early 80s Hondo tried to up their game by sourcing some from Japan. I'll check it out and let you know. There were 2 for sale recently on Ebay and I was soooo tempted to bid for one of them. But with Xmas coming up I thought I'd better be sensible and hang onto the money... It's a bit of a nightmare with neck dive etc, but for me it has an instantly recognisable quality to it which I think is how it should be when you design something.. It's a bit like Vintage cars vs Modern cars; the new ones are more streamlined, aerodynamic, fuel efficeint etc, etc but older cars somehow look more quirky and cool to me, if that makes sense?
