So its not a permanent deal chaps, just really fancy trying one out for a bit.....alternatively you could always invite me round for a cuppa tea and let me play it through your rig cheers Steven
MB1. ..."Tonight Mathew! ..im going to be!...... rumour6
You need to get yourself down to the Station, get the train to Wymess Bay... get the Ferry... climb to the top of a hill and have a loud word with yourself...having sorted that out you can rejoin society refreshed... then have a pint and sell/trade all your....oh no stop it!!! This only makes you the same as rest of us... there should however be a nice quiet padded forum for us all to go to occasionally. Good luck (you do know this journey has no end don't you?) 6stringbassist
This guy got this beautiful bass from Ebay. He beat ME to it. I'd have won this for £621 if it wasn't for him, and now he wants to trade it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bassmeg
Temporary swap shop, sounds like a wicked idea to me. Surly there should be a dedicated place on the forum for that.

Prime_BASS
Well I think anyone reading this will now this road will lead to you selling your nice new EBMM Ray and a kidney to buy a rickenbacker, only to sell that on... I'd probably start a topic in General bass chat though as you sent looking for anything permenant, maybe look in gear porn section see who has rickenbackers and just message them see if they don't mind lending you one for a week or 2, offer a new set of strings to sweeten them up????,
Prime_BASS
I know what you are saying, I've had my jag the longest but gas for another Ray type bass is nearly making me offer it out there. I've had 6 different basses since the start of the year "/ So your not that bad.

Prime_BASS
Omg, I knew this would happen. Although I'm surprised at you not liking the ray sound. It makes yourself easier to hear in load mixes which is great if you have some talent but not if you don't, still Mark hoppus got buy with one with a pick, picking 8ths and 16ths. Plus it's the 3EQ so you can dial out the mids if you wanted? Although I'm confused as to year, as it has the old bridge and I don't recall ever seeing a 3eq with that bridge. I'd be buying but it's the wrong colour for me.
gjones
I hear what your saying,,,however as a said I dont see the point in having this kinda bass when you dial out the mids,,,which gets rid of the 'stingray sound'. I like being heard in ma band,,,as a three piece there aint no hiding my playing,,,plus the level I play at through ma ampeg rig certainly cuts through the mix, its specicifically the glassy sound the bass gives I dont like,,,,I had to boost the bass on the amp and the bass itself and pretty much cut out all mids so I could get a tone I like. im getting the year of this bass from the serial number on the bridge. I went onto the EB website and got the year from there.
It's strange, I have a friend who plays with a bluesband and has a MM Sterling. I really don't like the sound he gets with the MM when it's being played without the band but once the band starts up it really sounds excellent. You can hear every note and it's bassy and punchy and clear. I've heard him play through his amp with just vocal PA and also through a big P.A. and the sound is exactly the same i.e. sounds a bit iffy on it's own but really great when playing with the band. He used to play a Precision but the MM sits in the mix so much better. Maybe you should get yourself a long lead and go out front when your band are playing to see how the Stingray sounds when the rest of your band are playing. Meanwhile have a butchers at this video which shows the diffferent sounds you can get with a Stingray ...including reggae! http://www.musicmanuk.co.uk/video_stingray4.htm By the way I don't have a MM but I've been converted by seeing the guy I was talking about above play his and if I had the spare cash I'd buy yours right away.....it's a looker. Also Munk' you may suit better a HS 2EQ ray?
Delberthot
Why do you want a Rickenbacker? If its to get the classic Chris Squire sound then you're going to struggle. I've had several Ricks and couldn't get a decent tone from them at all. Plus, unless you're skinny, I found that the lack of any body contouring made it very uncomfortable to play as your forearm digs into the hard edge of the body. Another thing I found is that for something hand made they're not terribly well put together or finished. I was unfortunate to own one of the famous midnight blue ones where the paint would run under the varnish making the white binding turn pale blue. I never liked Stingrays despite owning about a dozen of them. The best Stingrays are the 5 string ones which aren't really stingrays - they're Sillouette basses with the electronics from a Sterling (until recently) The closest I've ever got to a Rick tone has been from my EB-3 but with the money you'd get from this you could easily get yourself one of the Gibson SG basses. I think a Ric is just one of those basses ive always had in mind. However like you said, I aint heard to many rave reviews recently of them. Oh aye happy belated birthday mate (seen your name at the bottom of the home page the other day)
And I've also got a friend who has a Rickenbacker 4001 which cost him a small fortune and sounds woolier than a field full of sheep. The guy who plays with Paul Weller has one and whenever I see him on TV the sound is wooly too. There's a guy who sells Rickenfakers I see popping up on basschat now and again. You should try one of those first......£299 cheap as chips. EDIT Aha ...This is the Rickenfaker guy http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Retrovibe-RV4-Bl...ents_Guitars_CV Also does Stingrays! By the way a guy bought the jazz bass version and put up some mp3s of him playing......it sounds better than the real thing. I'll see if I can find the thread. jezzaboy
And on the 7th day God rested and said to Steven, "isn`t it about time you got shot of that Stingray!" Re the Rick. I was over at Absolutpepper`s place yesterday doing a deal, as they say, and he showed his Rickenbacker. Beautiful guitar but a heavy bugger and the top of the body cuts into his arm so much he has to wear a wrist gaurd whilst playing it, as mentioned above. Also the sound ain`t for eveyone. And on the 8th day God said to Steven, "isn`t it about time you got shot of that Ricky!" Jez

munkonthehill
hola all, it has been brought to my attention that due to the very helpful No5 post on my thread saying about how this bass was 621bucks it may look as though im trying my arm for my resale at 760notes. Just to clarify that the ebay auction went into a bidding war with me and said poster and the final bill was 720 + 40p&p(due to insurance and ridiculous weight of the OHC). I asked the mods to remove post No5 as it may hinder my resale or trade possibilty, however I was told it was fine and wouldnt be an issue. So I hope this clarifies things cheers
Quatschmacher
As a way of taking the glassiness out of your Ray's tone, have you tried stringing it with flatwounds? I did this to my Sterling (which, to my ears is even glassier than the Stingray) and it did wonders. Quatschmacher
To me, a Ray with flats is still identifiable as a Ray. Check out this guy's Youtube clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA_KrCDjbV4...=1&index=55 This is a comparison of rounds vs flats on the same 3-band Stingray (though the flats still sound quite new). Check his other clips with flatwounds.
