Doddy Posted May 7, 2010 Share Posted May 7, 2010 I get amp GAS all the time. I used a Hartke rig for years,but got serious GAS after trying a Bergantino cab,that I had to have it. I still lust after new amps-most recently the Mark Bass and TC stuff,but it goes away after when I plug in my Genz Benz/Bergantino rig. dave_bass5 Posted May 7, 2010 Share Posted May 7, 2010 Ive never suffered from amp/cab GAS either. I'd like new rigs but cant seem to bring myself to spend any money on new amps/cabs. I think the biggest reason is my gear just fits in the cars, so anything bigger would be pointless. Its a good situation, i just wish i could find a reason to stop swapping basses. Dubs Posted May 7, 2010 Share Posted May 7, 2010 (edited) I've had Trace Elliot, Carlsbro, Ampeg, Genz-Benz, Epifani, SWR, TecAmp, and Orange... all in the last 3 years! ...that's not including a QSC power amp that I was using with an SVP-Pro EDIT: Thinking about it, that was all in the last 2 years!! It's just a matter of your feelings deep inside, the thing that says "i want this". I mean that's what GAS is really when you think about it. I had a 20 watt practice for when I learnt the trade at home in my room, then a 35 watt Orange Crush for early practice with my band, then a Laney 100 watt ancient job for when we started gigging and now i'm on my first 'proper gigging amp' - superfly 500/Peavey 4 ohm 2x10/ Unbrand homebuild 1x15. My evolution has been out of necessity in amplifiers rather then in want. The superfly (when working!) sounds killer into the 2x10 (waiting for the 1x15 to arrive to unlock it's real potential). I think GAS just for basses is as much an psychological thing as they are much more part of you and what it says about you as they are strapped to your chest on stage. I just listen out now, and weigh it up, literally, with the size/weight/wattage/features etc. Do I miss my old Trace? A little...but the amps I have now are definitely more to my tastes. The Orange rig (bass and guitar versions) wont be moved on despite the fact they are more of a home/recording use purchase. I will use them live if I get chance at a decent venue though. The DB212s are fantastic, but Ive gone for 1 4 ohm version now in Classic Black and sold the two 8 ohm ones to Higgie. Would be much happier if there was always a decent PA/monitor system you could just plug into at every venue/rehearsal space. In fact, I think that should be the law.
