+1 I use the bass amp a lot.

Here are two badass free synth plugins (MAC & PC) with large, high quality sample libraries (several gigs between them). Great for free products:

1. Magix Independence Free

2. Camel Audio Alchemy Free

:hi:
Better late than never! ..Reaper user here.. & just getting my head around all the goodies you guys have kindly passed on.. :thank_you:

> Only fair that I share some free plugins (for WIN32/64 and MAC AudioUnit/VST) that have come my way. I couldn't see them elsewhere on the thread?..

http://www.voxengo.com/group/free-vst-plugins/ with some new releases for 2013..

A selection of vst's that I can recommend, and use with Reaper..

'OldSkoolVerb': some lovely, very use-able pre-sets and quite tweek-able :)

'Tube amp': again, some very use-able pre-sets ('Bass Warmer') and good routing options..

'Marvel GEQ': easy to use interface; natural sounding 16-band EQ for mastering etc.. 'Brighter and Bassy' pre-set

I've just been trying a new EQ - and was so impressed with the way it worked on vocals and guitars, that I thought I'd come here to link/share...

I have been doing a bit of looking myself though I am not sure what benefit all the differences with a lot of the kit is . I have reaper and in amongst all the boutique looking free stuff I keep seeing reco's for the Cockos stuff I already have

however if virtual free GAS is your thing, and some of the kit looks very nice have a look at this

The Reaper plugs are designed for clean, artifact free work - for initial mixing, correction etc... if you add the EQ I mentioned above (after ReaEQ has sorted out all the unwanted stuff) you can add sparkle, grit, warmth, fairy dust and all sorts of sonic loveliness.... same goes for compressors ,limiters etc.

'clean' and 'character' plugs have their own place in a mix imho.

My Mixing/ listening skills are just not up to picking a lot of this sort of thing out , and the amount of differing kit and the subtleties they all offer appears mindboggling ( :gas: ) , let alone finding out that all the efforts I have been trying with till now is only the first half of the job  , And I dont even do that very well yet  .

I am just about to download the Mixing files , I will try to play with these things in the process this month , I recall downloading lots of bits of kit that Si recomended , but I am not sure that my brain works in the right way to appreciate what needs to be appreciated to get the benefit from them.

I heartily agree with the above. I've a lot of stuff available, but honestly can't tell the subtle differences between them, very often. Old age and deafness are not helping, certainly, but I had this same inability in bygone days, too. I could spend an afternoon listening to hi-hats in a drum shop, and not be able to distinguish between most of them. When I do find something I like, though, it's for keeps, generally. I wouldn't know how to define the difference; when it's right, it's right, that's as close as i get.
With mixing, I try several approaches, and a whole range of presets or adjustments. There's a lot more luck than judgement, I'm ashamed to say, as, despite a reasonable grounding in the basic principles and a fair bit of experience, I just don't capture the finer points. 'Fleshing out' works fine, but that's my lot, really. A lot of these compressors, EQs and the like are, for me, like pearls before swine.

Some of them have already been mentioned

I think these have been mentioned before for the link was an old one. I've just found this collection of free VSTs that are rather nice:

http://antress.blogspot.co.uk/

A few stand out for me:

Modern Apophis is a really nice compressor that is nice as a mix buss comp. I use an attack of 10ms, release of .6 anda ration of 2 and it gives a bit of life to a mix. (see a good tutorial about this here: http://therecordingrevolution.com/2015/01/22/a-simple-move-to-get-more-punch-out-of-your-mix-video/

Modern Spacer - puts everything in the same room. It gives a live-in-the-studio feel. Can be quite nice but I'd like to tame it a bit.

Modern Compressor - I dropped it onto a drum master channel and those drums sounded right there in the room with you.
