Im thinking about getting this Fender jazz i found in a shop. Its the best one I have played ever IMO, sounds amazing!!!

The only problem is on the cosmetic side of things, its white and i dont really like white basses. Im wondering how much it would cost to get it re painted? And im guessing they would have to take the neck of to do this right? Is there anyway to get it re painted without taking it off?

Thanks for any help :)

No offence meant but, yes you are kind of.

It won't affect the bass at all. If you were to have it repainted with the neck still attached there's a fair chance it may affect the neck.
How old is it?
There's many a 60's and 70's bass that was stripped and re painted, reducing it's value massively :)
And yeah Everything has to come off for a proper jobbie.
Don't panic though cos any good luthier will get it back together playing as as well as it does now.

Sand all of the paint off down to bare wood, then finish it with some 1200 grit sand paper then build up and sand back at least 20 coats of primer then depending on the finish you want put on several coats of either nitrocellulose for a matt finish or I use Plastikote paint for a gloss finish that's the basics I use.

*Disclaimer* I am not a specialist I have built up my technique on several of my own basses and after trial and error this is what I have ended up with, if you need any help PM me.

Wayne - if you're going for a solid colour finish, how come you go to the trouble of sanding back to the wood? Being the lazy, corner-cutting pikey I am, I'd think you could just key the original finish with sandpaper or wire wool & dispense with most - if not all - of the primer.

I recommend Screwfix own brand black/white/clearcoat gloss spray - loads cheaper than Plastikote! :)

I did that very thing with the white precision I just did but with my pricey basses I like to do it right.

Is the Screwfix stuff the same as Plasikote?

Wayne. What kind of punk rocker are you? 1200 grit sandpaper? 20 coats of primer? Joe Strummer must be turning in his grave (unless he was cremated!).

Jez :)
So how much do you think it would cost?
We have a paint/body shop about 100 yards from my office. When I was trying to put together a Thunderbird project, they simply asked me what colour I wanted ('black gloss') and said if I could supply the body rubbed down, they'd charge me a flat £50.00 to prime and spray it next time they had a black job in. Sweet. In this day and age, you don't need to pay hundreds. A bit of elbow grease plus time and patience works a treat. Phone some garages.
