silverfoxnik
Hi Folks I was recently watching the 'Lost in Translation' movie and loved the soundtrack so much that I ordered it from Amazon. Amazingly, Amazon got the CD here before Xmas so I've been listening to it a lot these last few days. Turns out one of my favourite pieces of music from the film is by 'Squarepusher'; a beautiful but short track called "Tommib" which reminds me of Erik Satie, Debussy and Steve Reich amongst others. It's quite stunning! I can't find the actual clip from the movie where it's used but here's a YouTube cover.. I knew from threads on here of his quite considerable bass playing talents but it seems that there's a lot more to Squarepusher as a musician than I realised. Is anyone else a fan, and what else of his catalogue should I check out..? Thanks Nik
phil.i.stein
damn straight ! guy is a twisted genius. some of his stuff can be 'challenging' to listen to, i recommend seeing him play live as your appreciation of his stuff will skyrocket. i like the old stuff best, like the "big loada" e.p. and the "hard normal daddy" cd. but there's plenty of other great stuff too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4YdmXwotyQ check out more you-tube stuff..
Huw Foster
Yeah he's defnitely a very accomplished composer too IMO. Beep Street from Hard Normal Daddy is one of my favourite tracks - I think it's beautiful. Some good stuff on his debut (Feed Me Weird Things) and some of the later stuff from Ultravisitor and Budokan Mindphone. No sure about his recent output, but all credit to him that he's always developing his sound. Very versatile!
phil.i.stein
this clip should probably be in the funk and groove thread too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL6DD-oeveg Edited December 26, 2009 by phil.i.stein

MacDaddy
i post this in every thread about Squarepusher, but I own one of his old combo´s that he gigged at the Albert Hall it´s been tweaked and customised by Mike Walsh of Zoot, who is Sqarepusher´s go-to-guy. There is stuff from when he was on The Culture Show somewhere on Youtube which is worth watching, and more musically accessible.
karlthebassist
Jenkinson is one of my favorite players without a doubt. I absoloutly love his album Music Has Rotted One Note. That Culture Show clip is defo worth a watch on YouTube.

derrenleepoole
One of the best bassists on the planet... why? Because he makes it look some goddamn easy I'm absolutely loving the clip with him and a 'real' drummer though... apparently there is a recording of him with a real band doing a concert somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it! Thanks Nik
o.k. here comes a slight tangent.. i've already gobbed off enough, but, i was looking at your o.p. and realised i could have weaved it differently... i would like to recommend another contender in the multi-talented-bastards arena, and that would be Amon Tobin. he does slightly less bass-guitar biased stuff, instead, braziliian-drummer/percussionist/bass/noise ambient stylee. in fact, if those two got together along with flevans & lack of afro, with autechre for supper, you're talking fantasy boogie/chill trust me, check out http://www.amontobin.com/field/ ,

Chris2112
I've always thought he was a fantastic player who simply never got the hang of writing great or catchy tunes! I appreciate the skills he has, and the unique approach he has, but it always came off like a slightly poor version of Aphex Twin for me. His bass solo stuff is somewhat more amusing to me. silverfoxnik
Thanks folks, that's really helpful.. The Amon Tobin stuff is really cool too! The Culture Show clip made me laugh when Squarepusher spoke about being somewhere 'creatively between a ciche and a monkey'.. Having looked at quite a few of the YouTube clips now, I think his bass playing is less exciting than what he's doing with his electronic music, though you can hear how the bass is also a key element at times.. (Going completely off-topic for a minute, is it me or Lauren Laverne really quite luminously beautiful? Maybe I had one too many yesterday...) Finbar
Check out Tundra 4 and Iambic 9 Poetry - my two favourite Squarepusher tracks, yet completely different.

pantherairsoft
Just Noticed this thread. On August the 7th i got married and my wife walked down the isle to Tommib by Squarepusher. Cool! (Then we walked out to Gorecki by Lamb). Squarepusher is a very talented man!
derrenleepoole
I didn't know there was new stuff on the way, now I'm very excited
Rayman
I like Squarepusher, it was Urb who first recommended him to me, so I checked him out. Some of the stuff can be a bit hard going though I feel, and a bit too out there for me. I can't be doing with distorted bass, which does crop up quite a bit. risingson
It's very much the same with Aphex Twin, both guys are vastly talented but they both write music that challenges people's perceptions of what's right and wrong. Check this out also: For what's it's worth, I'm not a massive fan of Squarepusher's bass playing but I absolutely love his music, and a lot of other stuff of Warp Records. thisnameistaken
I quite like his records and he is a phenomenal musician but I've seen him live twice and didn't really get into it either time. But the reason I've maintained a pedal board for so long is 100% because of his influence.

51m0n
He's cool. Prefer his electronica to his bass solos though. I would recommend T-Power to anyone remotely interested in drum and bassy electronicay stuff: Self Evident Truth... is an incredible album
urb
Awesome bloke - awesome musician - end of.... The thing I like most about him is his willingness to fail in order to try new things out and really push himself all the time - it's the imperfections that make compelling art - even though I know he strives for ridiculously high standards in everything he does. And the other thing I like is that I don't like all of his music - meaning he remains challenging and not happy to be predictable in any way. I'll be getting the new album regardless...
