munkonthehill
this here my good friends is an amazing band with one of their amazing songs funk 48, Joe walsh at his best with the james gang. its the bass player tom Kriss's tone that i love. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkZepbHIrvE now check it at 1:35 for the wee solo parts. How the hell to i get this tone. I reckon if i can get this tone will never touch my eq or pedal settings ever again hahahaha
Davo-London
It sounds overdriven or distorted to me. Maybe he's using a pedal. Have you googled to see if his rig is defined. I don't really like his tone. But it's a personal thing. Davo
Mikey R
I reckon hes probably pushing a valve power amp hard
stingrayfan
Sounds like a muddy sounding bass like a Gibson EB3, played at the neck, with dead strings, through a curly lead into a homemade amp. Not my bag but I think you could get that sort of tone fairly easily if you went back to the late 60s!
SS73
Sounds like most of the gear is being pushed hard or is worn out, especially the speakers, as the tone just isn't coming through, I think it may seem an easy sound to get, but to get that amount of mud even from an EB3, could be a Jazz with really flat flats. Rich
Pretty bass, ghastly tone. But yep, it is a deeply personal thing.
Mr. Foxen
Check out Bill Steer's Firebird, not much except crappy live footage on youtube, but that style of beefy bass.
MoonBassAlpha
If you like that tone, you'll probably also love: The bass at 1.36 This thick sort of tone doesn't really make it on to recordings much these days. Wil
Very 60s, that tone. Horrific
jmstone
I also like that bass tone... I think I can get some similar tones to that from my ABM300 15" combo - it has a "grind" setting that blends in a valve pre- as far as I understand it.. Helps if you combine it with a bass with few harmonics.. My Ibby definitely gets closer than the streamer. James
51m0n
That is my absolute least favourite kinda bass snorgle of all Awful mate, but if it floats your boat best of luck getting it! I'd advise buying a really nice rig and setting it up next door and turning it up very very loud so the house rattles along with you and the walls cut out all the harmonic content.... pantherairsoft
Soft overdrive or fuzz and a Markbass head with the VLE filter (Vintage loud Speaker Emulator) and turn it waaaaaaaaaay up. Just had it now with my SA450 head and Bass Blogger pedal, well close anyway!
