16 pedals to start.

Then about £10 per new pedal as they are launched.

Limited user slots for new pedals.

Have to use an app to put new pedals on it.

I'm sure it will sell loads, but it really looks like Boss had a look at the Line 6 HXOne (200+ pedals in it, no cost for updates and new sounds, no need to use the app) and just did the opposite.

The Boss is slightly more expensive too.

I would really really like a Turbo Distortion that didn't have the mad hiss levels of the original, but I still wouldn't buy this.

Yeah, some folks have relabelled the slogan from “play for life” to “pay for life”.😂

Yeah, it feels like a day late and a dollar short.

Not for the first time, I look at this and see a Boss/Roland product with a UI from the 1990s.

I'm watching the Andertons vid now, and comparing this to my powerful and flexible HX One, this feels... quaint.

Sure, you get the classic Boss form factor... but the compromises are significant.

It’s interesting how at various times Zoom and Eventide have tried the “buy the hardware and then paid software add ons” - which in theory should work - but in practice people just want to buy a thing and have all of it.

...and yet as someone who has an entirely analogue board the appeal of a pedal with a familiar shape and a few extra tricks up its sleeve for occasional use is appealing... never even been remotely tempted by the Line6 stuff as too much scrolling...

Not quite seeing it - if you want a multi effect there are plenty that size, or if you want an optional single effect that you can pick from a large amount, there are plenty of options for that, that isn't this, don't want too many options, there are a lot of far cheaper ones that don't need a phone to set up. And almost all cheaper and not needing to buy the 17th onward effect.

Their selling point here is 'We know everyone else has already done it, but we are boss'.

Boss have always been a odd one, somehow they've managed to be one of the biggest companies in guitar effects while rarely being anyone's favourite.

I say this as a owner of the gt-1000 core.

Maybe it's being based in Asia so being informed by a player market that's probably as far away form the Anglophone world as possible. Maybe it's just being such a big corporate beast.

I really can't see this while licensed plugin formate taking.

It will be interesting as they say these are brand new algorithms what their next iteration of multi's and modellers look like.

Boss are loads of peoples favourites. When they came in in the late 70s, early 80s there was pretty well nothing to touch them and they remained that way for a long time. They came up with the standards for many effects and kind of defined both the size of effects and the controls we expected of them. And even the colours we expected effects to be!

I think they are still the reference for what effects are supposed to sound like.

Yea they were the industry standard through the 70' to 90's but I'm not sure how many people are putting a boss pedal in their top 5's these days. They spawned a whole cottage industry of modders and their short comings were as responsible for industry standards of boutique pedal world as their size and controls.
