Messy or not, what's on your (music) work desk right now?

Was just taking a pic to reply to a thread mentioning a Zoom B3 and thought it might be of interest to see people's desks with all the good and bad on it, the cool things, the mundane things, the choice of things.....so here's mine 😁.  I've taken over the front room bay window with my bass gear and my wife has let me, just about get on with it, but she cringes when we have non-musician visitors.🫣🤔😁

 

So right now, take a pic and share your desk!

I have a feeling I'm the winner.

 

 

The actual area I generally use for a workbench is the bit of the keyboard drawer between the mouse mat and the edge, although I do occasionally move the keyboard to give me a bit more room. The settee to the right is a two-seater submerged to the same level all the way along. It looks very slightly messier than normal because Mrs Zero's watch is sitting on the keyboard being charged.

I guess I have to be relatively tidy, as I'm working in a very small space. (There's a Skoda Superb Estate outside with a full boot, too!)

Mine is about to get reduced - Sub Zero is about to move out (about time, he's 29) and I'm reclaiming his bedroom which was formerly my music and computer room. Then I'll have somewhere to put various pieces of music making and recording equipment that I've bought but have had nowhere to set up.

This workspace is shared with my day job where I do graphic design for packaging hence the rather tidy nature of everything. 

 

Most of my programming is done with the mouse and QWERTY keyboard and the guitars, basses and controller keyboards normally only come out when I am actually doing recording for the purposes of making something for release to the public.

Here's mine as I left it last night before hitting the sack. I do try to keep the desktop clear but small objects gradually accumulate, either because I haven't found a home for them yet or because I haven't got round to restoring them to said home. On this occasion I stayed up re-doing the cabling on the smaller (direct-to-PA) board, which involved swapping a cable from the larger board. They are both for skinny-string guitar btw.

There was a gremlin in my last post . 🤦‍♂️

Anyway , I started to go through the mess a few days ago. Then midweek , the heatwave made things unbearable 🥵

It all started with a fight with very large tv and soundbar boxes which I purchased a few months ago . 
Yesterday, I purchased a Mac mini which is connected to the tv in the front room.. Hopefully I can purchase a MacBook on black Friday/ Christmas time . 
This means I can do away with the 2017 iMac , and  have 2 places to record my GarageBand efforts when I’m inspired/ not too lazy ..

My desk is its normal state of messy, although it also has a pigeon on it at the moment, but I don't have a camera!

This has been on the site a few times, not least last month when I tore it all apart to install new racks, cabling and new toys, so it's a bit neater than usual.

 

Too small to let it get messy though.

Yeh, I know what you are thinking, a pigeon? where is the other one. Well, at that moment he was out in the hallways, but now he is back on his clock stand where he belongs.

Mine’s really simple. Under the desk is my headphones bass practice pedalboard, guitar pedalboard,and MacBook and Scarlett which i record stuff just for fun using headphones.

Three connected songs currently in progress, in varying stages of completion/disrepair. Today, we are mostly trying to work out what the hell the guitar's meant to be doing during the verses of Song #2, which may or may not be called Hourglass, or Seventh Season, or something we've not yet thought of.

 

I will be consulting the Parasaurolophus Of Prog (currently working out a synth line for the instrumental intro) for advice but I'm pretty sure he'll tell me it's going to need a guide vocal before everything falls into place. Which is tricky as Lovely Singer has a horrid cold and is croaking more than talking. Never mind singing.

 

The real mess is, as ever, in my head.

My day job space is behind that couch, with the desk facing the basses. Some days it makes me go off for little play breaks, other days it’s a motivating reminder why I work full time as 2 of those basses still need fully paying off 🙄 and i feel lucky to now have the spare room, but not the mortgage 😬

So… all these set ups, but not many folk entering the Basschat monthly composition competition, or maybe you used to? 

 

It’s not a serious competition, just making something up based on a photo chosen by the previous months winner.

September’s comp will be pinned in the Recording section sometime on the 1st or 2nd.
