OK... so what's everybody's opinions this month?

Quite interested to see the Enfield and Vigier reviews. Very disappointed in the NAMM feature - it looks like nobody actually went and they just lifted a load of pictures from the manufacturers and lifted the news from Harmony Central or something.

I wish they would stop with these pointless run through of available jazz basses and p basses with their spec. Again, lifted from the Fender website it would seem. Looks like filler content to me. Liked Stuart Clayton's amp review though - not had chance to see one of those in the flesh so that was quite informative.

I read from Adrian's letter at the start that there is a change in editor... lets see if that brings with it any changes. Disappointed in this one... I found the ads more entertaining than the content this time round.

Loads better than the previous issue i thought.I'd have to agree with the points about the range run thru's.A couple more gear reviews in the space used would have made more interesting reading. On a more positive note i'm glad to see it's coming out monthly and so it should.

+1 here as well.
i liked the JJ write up as i didnt really know anything about him. Also, I am trying to follow the Guy Pratt tutorials.
I still think the pink punk issue was one of the best as it seemd to absolutley everything in it and something for everyone.
Its difficult for me as i want newbie style features which would of course completely bore the more advanced players, but issues which deal with high end specialist stuff gets only passing interest from me.

On the whole, tho i enjoy some, or more than some, and sometimes everything thats there, so ill continue to buy it.
I think ill email the ed a list of newbie topics that i havent seen so far!

I don't normally buy the mag (all the info I need is here!) but would be interested to see the Vigier review but can't really get into town today with my heavy workload. Hmm. If there was some way of looking at it perhaps electronically...

Ped as they sent me two copies every month - I'd be happy to forward a copy to you, if you PM me...

Hi Platypus (brilliant creatures btw)

That is very kind of you indeed. I am going to Crufts tomorrow and will probably need a magazine for the train so I will have a look at the station to see if they have a copy, if not (they probably wont) I will PM you tomorrow with my details for sendage.

Cheers

+ Liked the JJ info - I know nothing about motown etc. and at least now I know one more of those famous bassists you all go on about.

- NAMM feature was a bit poor.

- Another pointless spec sheet of basses without telling you anything about them i.e. if they're any good etc.

+ Good tutorials. Particularly liked the Billy Sheehan stuff which gave me my first ever attempt at playing with 3 fingers.

- Not interested in the transcription. Can't they do more than one per issue?!?!

+ Vigier review was interesting.

Yeah I am excited, never been before. I am going on the Terrier day because I have an unhealthy fascination with Staffordshire Bull Terriers, so can't wait to meet them all! I will take lots of pics!

P.s is it bad form to scan in the vigier review and email to someone?

I think that it would be sensible to keep that one as a pm!

Have got this issue but not read it fully yet, however I think they spend far too much time deliberating on the differences between hugely expensive custom basses. There are budget/mid price basses in there, but not many. It comes across as that they are reviewing them more for their own benefit than the average bassist.

I agree with much of the above. I ploughed through this edition in about 2hrs and there wasn't too much to stir the imagination. :)

Best thing of recent years was the 1x12 comparison that came out about 6 months ago. It was fairly incisive and actually compared different models - something mere mortals find it difficult to do due the disperate nature of equipment retails. The kind of thing I would have in mind... 'whats best? Super-redhead or Eden Metro??'. 'is the extra £400 worth it when comparing x vs. y vs. z 4x10's'

I really enjoyed the weekend warrior features of yore too.

Ps. I'll still buy it whatever though.

Hey Russ

You and others will be pleased to hear that Nick Wells the new editor is totally in agreement with a lot of the criticisms you mention - and believe me there are LOADS of changes coming in the new regime - I'll be contributing more stuff but Nick's outlook is very much looking to move on from the very repetitive nature of the recent issues - i.e. page after page of bass guitars and no real design or coherent content structure.

I obviously haven't seen the new design but we have lots of plans to reshape the mag and hopefully make it much more relevant in terms of features and reviews and create a much better looking and feeling end product - hopefully future issue will include articles of more substance and look far less like it was all thrown together at the last minute :)

Hope that sounds encouraging - it's going monthly as well - so you'll get a lot more bass for your money soon as well.

Cheers

Mike

Monthly will be great - as long as there's enough good stuff to fill it. I find it hard waiting two months for an issue of any magazine I buy religiously; but at the same time I don't want to spending £4 on a pamphlet. :)

Mike, you've got me all excited. Am looking forward to seeing how it all shapes up.

OK. Sounds promising... As the NAMM feature was so poor (it may as well not be there for how poor it was), I'm intrigued to see if we get a decent Messe review... that's if it is chosen to be covered... but let's face it, it's THE major European music show, which self-respecting mag wouldn't cover it?! Mike - are you out there this year? I noticed that you covered some of it in the mag last time. I love Frankfurt - you get to see all the stuff that you will never get to see here in the UK. For people who haven't been to Messe, there is a public day on the Saturday... it's mind blowing to see such a range of gear - from people selling from a component level (e.g. jack sockets, reverb chips etc) up to finished products. For an idea of scale... Take Music Live, multiply that by 4... that's just the drums... and I haven't even mentioned the pipe organs, let alone the guitars and basses!

I just love it no matter what, im just glad to have a decent bass mag back in the UK, i still have all but two isues of bassist from back in the day, and all the issues of BGM, cant take a bath without a stack of em, and the nice thing is i tend to take interest in different articles etc depending on my gas at the time lol

Can you either get the proof reading team to do their jobs right or pass the message onto Victor Wooten that the top 4 strings of a 5er are EADG and not ADGC :)

my only criticism is that BGM don't review enough cheap - mid range stuff, there's very rarely basses below £600 in there, and a lot of those seem to be reviews of very cheap beginner basses, things that are £100-£250, and so when i'm looking for a new bass in my price range, i have to go through pretty much every issue we own to get very little information.

but reading some of the points that people have made, i agree with most of them, although its never really been an issue for me. i'm not really a cover to cover reader, i flick through the pages looking at pictures and only read when something catches my attention, or if i'm looking for something specific. i normally read bass reviews though, and sometimes interviews if its with a player i listen to.

...err... but there's nothing wrong with a top C tuning...? You don't have to have a bottom B just because it is a 5. BGM have got it right in this case, Vic's 5 string bass is strung E-C.
