OK I have recently played a 5 string and, despite bad experiences when I had one 20 years ago, it felt good. So with a budget of about £300, what do bass-chatters suggest. Ibanez, Sire anything else?

If you want nice necks and great value for money a used highĀ spec Bass Collection e.g. 320 is usually a great buy. Alternatively Fender mex of ChineseĀ Dimension basses maybe.

If you don't mind a slightly wider neck maybe a G&L L2500 or Yamaha BB? They are all pretty good gigable basses.

i was looking at cort also. staying 4 for a while though yet.

Cort A5's are good, any SR Ibanez from SR505 and aboveĀ

I would look at Sire and Cort, both can do a decent 5 at a reasonable price. Cort also make Ibanez basses, never liked the Ibanez EDB 5 string I had though, low B sounded poor in comparison to the three Cort branded 5ers I've owned.

At that price point the best 5ers I have owned are a Yamaha BB425 and a Peavey Foundation 5.

+1 for the Yammy BB425

Earlier this year I bought my first 5 , it’s a Yamaha bb 415 , 41mm nut width which is really comfortable, nice string spacing and a super low action, so easy to play and it sounds great, and within budget, I would recommend one of these šŸ™‚

Are you after active or passive?Ā

If active, 3 band EQ or fine with 2 band?Ā

Fine with a decent 2 band. One of my Peavey basses has an EBMM 2 band clone fitted and that is great.

Ok that's going to rule out the budget Yammy BBs as they are purely passive. Shame as they are a cracking bass for the money!Ā

BB615 is active!

Yeah true. Although the preamp has often been cited as the weak spot on that one.Ā

Have owned a bunch over the years but cream of the crop have been

Yamaha 425x

Sire V3 (astonishing value for money). I have one for sale but even new they are in your price range

Sire V7, secondhand they are a good buy

Ibanez BTB Ā - fancy woods big and chunky bass, monorail bridge. Ā Nice all round bass
