grantgam Posted October 29, 2017 Share Posted October 29, 2017 Hey guys, So looking to sell my Ibanez Mikro bass and get something a touch bigger/better now I know that I'll stick with playing bass. I'm liking the look of the following basses and from what I have read, they all seem to be decent enough: Allen Woody Signature Epiphone http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Bass/Allen-Woody-Rumblekat.aspx Dean Evo XM http://www.deanguitars.com/query?upc=819998005856 Scott Whitley Signature SWB-1 http://chownybass.com/product/swb-1-scott-whitley-signature/ Does anyone have any first hand experience of which one would be better, which one to avoid (if any) or any further recommendations of a better alternative? I'm more than happy to buy second hand as well. I'm playing in a rock cover band - Wolfmother, Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Stones, that sort of thing. I guess tonally, basses can vary a fair bit - so this may be important. Those I own or have tried certainly differ in feel and tone. I haven't tried the Chowny but by all acounts it's a cracking bass. Be interested to know how you get on. [/quote] I'll be sure to get a look at a Mustang if I can; thanks for the recommendation My main issue is that I live in the North of Scotland, so there isn't a huge selection of guitar shops near me. And it's unlikely that any of the stores would stock short scale basses, so getting to play some before shelling out probably isn't going to happen. Just purchase from online retailers that have an easy, no quibble, returns/refund process, return shipping at their expense, live with it for a week, keeping it mint, and send it back if you don't get on with it. eg. Amazon has increased the price of the Rumblekat by 20 quid since I bought one, but I think £370 is still a good price, most other retailers asking £420..... I found it comfortable enough, but if you're used to a really slim neck, you may not. The Bronco neck, on the other hand, I found an absolute delight to play, as in, couldn't put it down! So where I strike the string with my pick is pretty far away from the Aft pick up on the Rumblekat. Although I understand that the vibration will resonate along the length of the string and to the pick up, I fear that it may lack the punch as they're a fair distance from where I'm striking. Scott Whittley SWB-1 (original version) ACG Skelf Short Scale All at different price levels but all good (but the ACG is without a doubt the best). The Jaguar SS looks great value for money, has a slim neck and PJ pickups. I have tried a Gretch Junior and that was really nice. Also tried the Squire Bronco and liked that too but it felt like it only had one sound in it. My favorite that I have tried so far has been the Fender Mustang with the PJ pickups fitted. The price was a bit to steep though for something I just wanted to see if I could get along with. I have noodled on all the basses I have listed for 5-10 mins in guitar shops. [/quote] When I read 'skelf', I instantly thought of the Scottish slang for a splinter - low and behold the maker is in Scotland. Going off the shape, I guess that may be where the model name came from. Would love a shot of an SWB-1, not overly keen on the body shape, but it looks like a nice, good quality bass. [/quote] I like the body of the Jaguar, very nice style. I wish Epiphone would do a shortscale thunderbird, I'd buy on in an instant if they did...
