Just stalking your Flickr feed now... are they all yours? That Limelight is a beaut..

Most of them used to be mine but are no longer with me.

I ordered the Limelight because I desperately wanted a Shoreline Gold 60's P. The Limelight is a really good bass - very well made and great sounding. But it had to go when a pre-CBS Lake Placid Blue Precision crossed my path: the one shown above.

My vintage Fender rotation started about five years ago with a Black/Maple 1975 Precision (I put a black PG on it, Roger Waters style):

Later I traded it in for a really cool 1968 Telecaster Bass (black refin):

Parallel to the '75 P I had a '74 Jazz:

Both the Tele and the Jazz had to go in favour of a 1965 Precision:

That one feels and sounds fantastic - I probably should have kept it. But then the 1964 LPB came along, which I could not let pass, since a pre-CBS custom colour Precision has always been my dream bass. So I traded the Limelight and the 1965 P.

2015 was a very good year (job-wise), so I was able to invest in a beat-up 1964 Jazz that sounded huge:

2017 was another good year, so when I saw the 1956 Precision (another dream bass) at Andy Baxter's, I sold the '64 Jazz to finance it:

I think with the Lake Placid Precision and the 1956 Single Coil I sort of reached the top of the ladder and the rotation might come to an end. At least on the Precision side. Now that I think about it, I don't have a decent Jazz Bass at the moment. And I also find the Competition series Mustangs really cool ... ;)

Here's one of my faves, 100% stock, very fine condition, 1961 Custom Colour Olympic White, stack knob Jazz. Comes with case, mutes, and all the original case candy, stack knob paperwork, even a spare set of unused strings!

So here is my 71 Jazz bass refinished in candy Apple red I got from a fellow basschatter a couple of months ago. She had a reissue pickguard on when I got her which I replaced with a genuine 69 tort pickguardwhich I got from Axel in Germany, and the soldering was quite shoddy which I’ve redone, I’ve also shielded all the cavities so she is now as quiet as a mouse. String with Rotosound 77 Jazz flats this is my main gigging bass, she is the “bomb”.

1992 Jazz Plus V. A fairly rare beast - an experimental top-range model only made 1989-94, and the 5s 1990-94. This one still has the original Fender Lace Sensor Jazz Bass pickups and Philip Kubicki 9 volt active pre-amp - many of them have been "improved" by swapping these for something more conventional. Sadly too heavy for me - I should really get around to trying to sell it :-(

Interesting history to this bass. I bought it from Billy Lunn from the Subways. Charlotte Cooper played it on a couple of tracks on their first album before getting a Lakland deal. They bought it from Ian  Broudie who produced their debut album.

The Lightning Seeds bassist played it in the 90’s on TFI Friday at least 3 times including the famous performance of Three Lions with Skinner and Baddiel just after England were knocked out of Euro 96.

Plays and sounds great, it is a 1980 with a poor quality neck joint, a random Coventry post code/serial number etched on the neck and random holes drilled on the front. However who cares for this level of mojo...

Plus it still smells of smoke whatever I do to clean it...

Here’s my number one bass, my MIM Fender Jazz Deluxe. I love it, it’s everything I want a Jazz to be. It plays and sounds amazing. The guy I got it from had it from new, but not for long; he was frightened to take it out live so it was in pristine condition when I got it. I’ve been giving it plenty of gig mileage since!
