I've never really understood the problem, there must be a hit record from every genre recorded on a Stingray, if you want to play with one technique and try and make the bass do the work maybe it's a problem? Play near the neck, play near the bridge, use a pick, use your thumb, give it a slap, cut the treble, if you are still getting one sound out of it before you've even started using the active eq then I'm not sure what's going on :)

User error :P

I think user error is as harsh as one-trick-pony...
I cannot imagine a situation where I could not make my Stingray fit in, but it clearly has a type of sound (which is why I like it so much) that others may not prefer... just like any other bass, really. Is a Precision a one trick pony too? I wouldn't say so, but whatever. Give me a Stingray or even a Precision ahead of any twin pickup bass, but that's just what I prefer.

What about a P Bass with a MM pickup in the right place ?

I'd say it was, for most of us. . . . then think of JJ Burnell and James Jamerson. Well, there are two tricks right there that are so far apart I don't know how "one trick pony" can accurately sum up a P bass.

When I had my MM SR5 I felt it didn't fit into certain bands and sounds. I've never felt that with a P bass, but for "multiple tricks" my Lakland 55-94 has been the most flexible bass I've owned.

You mean with just the MM pickup? I'd take it! In fact... that's what (eventually) my 5-string bass will be.

edit: if you meant having both the P and the MM... both overlap, but moving the P slightly upwards would not hurt too much, it would still sound pretty P-like. But I would not go for that. Two MM right by each other, ok... otherwise, just one MM would do, thanks :)

Well this is probably what I'd do with a 55-76, add a Precision pickup in the 'sweet spot'. Might look a bit messy, but that would be more 'me' tonally :)

I had one, and although it did sound great, and was beautifully made, I moved it on for two reasons - the neck was even slightly narrower than the SR5, and the slab body and my middle aged spread just didn't get on! A lovely bass in every other respect. Really reminded me of my old pre-EB 4 string.

I got mine purely as a replacement five string version of my pre EB Ray, it's the closest thing with five strings, I haven't noticed any difference in neck profiles between the three SR5s I've got? My middle aged spread is taking shape nicely too :D

I think the difference is mainly in the fingerboard radius - 7.5" on the Classics vs 11" on the regular SR5. Both great choices!

Having owned a few regular SR5s, I recently got my first Classics, a light-ish one and a not so light one.

[/quote] This looks way better than a standard Stingray 5 with elongated pickguard .I just wish they make the classic 5 with HS configuration. And congratulation!!This is one of the best looking vintage basses

Lakland 55 JJ ( passive only) US made placid lake blue.I cant find reviews on this, but guess it is something that makes me obsessed with its sound and quality😃

Very nice! I've never seen that model before. It's also relatively cheap, as by comparison a new 55-94 would probably cost a grand more. Ask them to send it to their nearest store to you, get down there and try it! And report back to the rest of us, of course... ;)

Yeah these are US made, but cheaper than a custom due to them being made in small batches.
Think this came off the back of Ben Kenney (Incubus) using a passive JJ in a 44-94 body shape.
I love this body shape, 22 frets and full access to all of them, my 55-01 is a dream to play. This JJ is pretty similar to the US custom I have on the way....couple more changes though :)

soon as I get the chance I'll try then report it back to you guys.Guess it's like a JO or Darryl J with alder body ( which I love). The only thing I miss is a tortoise shell pickguard...... or maybe I'm wrong🤔

Roscoe offers different pickup location as well. They put the humbucker closer to the neck ( like musicman). Found a video with how roscoe does the stingray sound.

That is what Carey Nordstrand did with his Nordy Dan Lutz Signature bass
