Yep, the first I think :) I'm struggling to find some time this month. I've got a skeleton down but it need a fair bit of work. I'll do my best to get something out though.

i have something in mind myself. it is a half done idea from a previous month that sprang immediately to mind when i saw the photo (great pic by the way). however i am having a annoyingly hard time trying to record it. all the parts are there but the actual recording is frustratingly difficult for some reason. hopefully i will get a good run at it and finish it up.

I might add, it's not very Zen. However I like it nonetheless.

Cheers!
It was meant to invoke lying there on a sunny afternoon, looking at a beautiful view, beer/reefer/cup of tea in hand, feeling just a touch mellow, a touch elated, and at one with the world...

well i did something. still couldnt get it right but it close enough for jazz. i would have loved to get it like it sounds in my head but something is missing and it just winds me up trying to suss it out. i will return to it later and attempt to expand a little but probably not for the comp. too busy, too hot and not in the right mental space. still its something and i always want to get something in.
i did attempt to play with texture a bit with the mix and pan automation. i think it is best off on headphones or speakers that are well apart. i am not sure its right as i think its a little unbalanced but i like the idea so i will practice with that one.
as usual its instrumental and short. very repetitive though, it did have another section to break it up a bit but it just made things worse to record. i did almost put a "mornats special" at the end which was just a deliberately poor bagpipe section, but i resisted. :P

Seriously tempted by this - not for the highland pipe sounds (definitely not my cup of tea), but for the Uilleann, Border and Smallpipes. I'd have to play them from a keyboard though, and that's not going to be ideal. If it was half the price, or if it included Swedish and German pipes, I'd go for it in an instant.

Maybe a USB MIDI breath controller ? Just the job for any VSTi wind instruments, regarding performance, expression and controlling Midi cc#'s.

You're absolutely right, that would be a better way to go, but I've never played any wind instruments and as it is I'm struggling to achieve adequacy on the curious and varied collection of instruments I already have, so I will resist the temptation. :)

PS apologies for the thread drift!

Hi all
A number of firsts for me here.
1. Entry to comp comp
2. First time playing borrowed eub on recording
3. First time I've written words and sung along to them on a recording
4. First time I've played drums for "public" consumption

I realised I had to do everything against my usual drawn-out procrastinating method just to get something out there.
All the tracks were done in 1 take, bass, then drums, then guitar, 5 minutes writing some words then singing them. So no polishing or redoing.
https://www.dropbox....5yp0/D.mp3?dl=0

It isn't even a style I'd usually play, it's just what came out when I started to record the eub.
I wanted a sweltering hot, breathless feeling, with the thin air sapping my strength, and strong sun reviving my body chemistry. Or something.
Sorry it's a bit long. too late now!

I'm liking the Tom Waits/Marc Ribot feel to it all...
And what's an eub?

Thanks Leonard
EUB = Electric Upright Bass. ("But why'd they have to call it Stagg?") I've probably noodled on it for about half an hour in total since it was lent to me, all in 2-minute chunks, as it's quite physical! The physical nature of getting the strings moving makes the notes come out on the back end of the beat, adding to the lazy feel. I guess that would/could change if I played it more.
Re Tom Waites - I was going to pitch shift the "singing" down an octave, but it sounded even more ridiculous... Think Darth Vader doing Waites. As I said, I resisted all urges to fiddle, tweak or "polish" (you know what I mean!)and found it quite liberating.
There's a lot to be said for being time-bound. I did the gtr bass & drums, then went on holiday, back on Tuesday, words and mix last night.

I have struggled for time for any number of reasons this month so my playing on this one is a touch sloppy me thinks, but needs must when the devil drives :)

Enjoyed the theme(s) and the voices supporting in the background, nice and authentic and matched the vision from the picture very well.
I found the stereo Rattle Snake jumping from speaker to speaker, a tad loud. :D
Good stuff, Dad.
