Hi folks

I bought this recently on something of a whim, aiming to sell my TRB-6 to part fund it. Problem is that despite the fact the Yammie has the aesthetic appeal of an 80's Skoda, and on that basis is not an instrument I want to be seen dead with, as a bass it's pretty hard to beat. I've also got £700 tied up in the Yammie and £1500 in this, and I'm guessing that if I can't bring myself to let the Yammie go, this one has to in order to free up more gear tokens.

The bass is a 2010 custom order from Fender Custom Shop. The original owner, from whom I bought it, is something of a name in bass terms, and clearly knows what he wants from an instrument. He specified the light nitro finish (incl. matching headstock) and hardware, and had the original Fender PUPs and circuit removed and replaced with Nordstrand units. The upgraded PUPs are extremely powerful, and the circuit lovely. I've found that Fender circuits, even in Custom Shop models, have the habit of being brittle at the top and boomy at the bottom, or at least this was the case with my Custom Classic Jazz and 40th Anniversary Precision - there are no such problems with this circuit. It can be played passive or active via a simple push/pull on the volume pot. Passive tone is pure classic Jazz/Precision, active a little more lively and contemporary, although not as lively as some (in fact I'd describe the active circuit as perhaps more subtle and restrained than some I've played). The bass has a really authoritative tone played either active or passive, especially when the P-PUP is soled. It's currently strung with some pretty played in and heavy rounds which are more like bright flats to the ear which no doubt help.

The build quality is up there with the new Yamaha BBs and Sadowsky. The finish is light nitro and is already starting to fade to a nicotine yellow. I no longer describe any instrument as 'immaculate' having encountered a seller a while back with acute OCD who found a hairline crack in the finish of an otherwise immaculate instrument and threw his toys out of the cot. Suffice to say that it's not far off though. Bass weighs in at under 9 pounds, light for a five string.

Bass comes with original hard case and candy as well as the certificate of authenticity. I would prefer to meet and hand over in person, ideally collection from Canterbury or Aberystwyth, although I will require payment by Paypal gift ahead of meeting elsewhere such as London (you can use normal Paypal goods payment but will have to cover the fees). Either way the price is fixed at the very reasonable £1500 which is what I paid.

No trades thanks, please don't offer.

Seller's original pics are below. I'll let the buyer know the identity of the original owner, suffice to say he's one of the UK's prominent pro's.

A Yamaha 6 string? I can only assume that the real Beedster has had his account hacked!

I know I know, funnily enough though more people seem to want to buy the 6er than the Fender :)

Still love that yammy ;-) let me know if it's up for sale and I'd consider!

Case in point!

Wow amazing...I assume 34 scale?
Also, are the Nordstrand PUs the standard PJ set they offer?
What's the weight?
Yes, 34 scale and Nordstrand PJ set (very nicely voiced and balanced). I'll weigh it later but it's certainly at the light end of the scale for a five

Re weight it's coming up on my scales at 8.8 lbs. We can give and take a few ounces for bathroom scale error, but either way the scale indicates it ways exactly the same as my 4 string fretless Jazz which is also quite light for a 4 string.

Chris

PS if i get any more offers for the Yammie I might just put that on eBay and keep the Jazz, I had no idea how popular the 6-ers are!

That Jazz looks seriously sweet - and a great price to boot! Tempting to sell something now to free up some funds....
Thanks, it's certainly a cracking price, which is in part why I bought it (I also paid £1500), and when i picked it up the seller was pretty clear that he was selling for substantially less than the bass was worth. I doubt you could get anything like this off the shelf from FCS for less than twice what I'm asking, and I imagine the custom order probably took care of another grand or so over that. It's not only a looker, it's a great utility bass, 5-strings, Precision and Jazz PUPs, active and passive circuits, string through or back loaded bridge. I can see why the player in question commissioned it in the specs he did.

MB1.

Thanks Martin

I've decided I need other things more than I need a five string, no matter how lovely it is. Trade wise I'm looking for bass with a stereo output and a cap on the back PUP. Otherwise it's good old fashioned cash only :)

Haven't been bumping this on account of reluctance to sell it but probably should

I'm very tempted to keep it, but have an incoming Precision that will both require paying for and will make this bass if not redundant then likely a second choice. I doubt you'd get an instrument of this quality for much less than £3k, certainly not from Fender. This really is in Sadowsky territory in terms of build quality and playability, and the PUPs/circuit are outstanding. A real pro gigging/recording instrument.
