This Bass Player is at the wrong gig!!

I love this video of the Jesus and Mary Chain playing on Letterman in the early '90s.
The core of the band, the Reid brothers, were the epitome of cool, always with shades and black clobber, never smiling. For this important US tour, their management arrange to have appropriate session players to perform, but it seems that there was a communication error, as this bass player is definitely at the wrong gig...

Haha! That's Francisco Centeno, and he was in the Late Show house band for a while. James had the very Sadowsky he plays for sale on this forum a while ago, here.

I bet no-one knew it had a bit of shoegazing history attached to it!

The usual Letterman house band bassist is Will Lee. Wikipedia says he started in 1982. He must have been on his holidays that particular day.

Here's Will playing slap bass with Hothouse Flowers on 'Be Good'. There's no slapping on the original but it kinda works. The first (and last) time there ever was slap bass on a Hothouse Flowers song.

He really looks like he's doing it deliberately to wind them up. Almost certainly from the house band. In fact the other house band members seem to be joining in a bit as well. 'I'll show you miserable limeys what puttin on a real show's all about!'
