For as long as i can remember Donny Hathaway's voice has been in my memory. i personally think as subjective as this subject is, he has the best voice ever to be recorded. he has power, control, subtlety, he never EVER, misses a note, or goes off key. pure perfection.. and this recording is live. to think this man threw himself out of a building and killed himself from depression.? its dreadful video quality but you can still hear his voice enough to tell just how good he is - to my ears a very similar voice to nat king cole

quirky songs not the greatest production/mixing but a bit of a marmite album - i love it :D :D

DH, I love you more than you'll ever know - It doesn't get any better. Amen. It does get different though... which is why I don't think in terms of who is the 'best'. We're not talking about how fast these guys could run 100m, or even how note perfect they can sing a series of notes. Singing is not athletics. Singing is vocal expression so for me no one is better than Donny, but there are people I love just as much :)

Thanks Bubinga5, for bringing some Donny into my morning!!
yes Willie Weeks on this live album. my opinions are subjective of course. :) there a great band on this album. "Little Ghetto Boy" is some of the best bass playing ive ever heard, not just from Willie but from any bassist ever.

oh f*** it, here it is. his playing is just wonderfully musical.

I love Donny and was lucky enough to tour Europe with Ike in the early nineties, I grew up a massive Zappa fan (loving Ike's singing) so to be on tour with him at age 25 felt like I'd died and gone to heaven. (played outside now and Lucille with him too :D )
Donny Hathaway live is utterly essential listening for any serious musician. Willie Weeks is just awesome.

It's weird cos the best voices i've ever heard aren't the best, not even close, but partly cos of that they are! Infact I know most people won't agree but i just love em!

My all time favourite singer is Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation. Her voice does very physical things to my insides, if I am listening to her when my wife is in the house I actually feel guilty.... And my second favourite singer is Blackie Lawless (shame he's such a cock). I can't imagine many agreeing with either of those.

A great voice and a good example of a cover being better that the original. I loved this by Al Kooper / Blood Sweat & Tears when it was released but the Hathaway version released a few years later was better in many ways. He sings it beautifully and with such emotion. Amy Winehouse did a version of this and it has far too much vocal gymnastics and misses the point completely and has none of the emotion of Hathaway's.
