Who are the real gunslinger virtuoso bassists?

There are loads of virtuoso bassists out there who can play almost anything, and with some feel. But so many of the ones I've heard seem a bit passionless, a bit too 'theoretical', too 'dry' in their choice of notes and phrasing. They often don't seem to have transcended their schooling.

So who are the technical masters who are also real 'gunslingers', the ones who really have some attitude, where they go beyond the idea that everything has to be perfect. You know, the ones who can really thrill you, like they generate lightning, not just a few volts and actually look like they are really into it. I'm not sure I can include people like Geddy and Chris Squire, they are not virtuosos who can sight read and play any style.

In my mind I'm thinking Scott Thunes, Tom Fowler, Jaco, Paul Chambers, Marcus ..

personally, les claypool from primus, pretty much the only bass "gunslinger" who in my view can make it work in a (relatively) commercial band and plays anything id actually want to listen to

Billy Sheehan, Les Claypool, Linus from Hollywood, Uriah Duffy, Chuck Wright, Roscoe Beck, Paul Turner, Leland Sklar - and that's just a few of the (mainly) rock guys!

Dominic "Forest" Lapointe is my favourite bass player at the moment. He's primarily a metal player but I doubt there's anything he couldn't do! I nearly posted Beyond Creation's music video in here, until I remembered he did a playthrough video so you can really see and hear what he's doing... Oh and the good news is, you can hear his bass on the actual album too... A rare treat for metal!

Lots of great bassist being listed here (Mingus definitely gets my vote).

Here's a curveball that the vast majority of you will [i]hate[/i] with a passion… Tom Jenkinson (aka Squarepusher) and 'The Modern Bass Guitar'. It blows my head that this track is played using a bass, albeit with a shedload of MIDI mojo going on. It's lightyears away from what most people consider to be 'musicianship', but for me, this guy is a modern-day gunslinger for sure.

Totally agree with all of the above. For me Jeff Berlin was my main inspiration in my formative years back in the 80's...and he is still a master of the electric 4 string. Most overlook him because of his truculence and outspoken views - but he is a monster.

My favorite fretless player is Percy Jones, another totally overlooked (and British) monster player! Why all of the UK based bass guitar publications constantly ignore him is beyond me, he should be celebrated.

Flea must be the most well known and most admired bass guitarist in the World today . I think he's a good player in many ways but not a great one and certainly not a virtuoso , but if Les Claypool is included then Flea should be too .
