Worked on this for three days in spare time, haven't got any time to do anything in the rest of month so thought sod it I will post this early. The image is stunning and I thought beyond words so I wanted to do something totally different from my normal entries, so tried to translate the emotion of what the picture does for me into sound, so here it is 'Beyond Words', used Ableton DAW, live guitars (rythm and lead), live bass two tracks, one with heavy weird sound effect. Used some synth sounds from Reason, also strings sound and chello. No loops or samples everything is played in live. Never done anything like this before so I hope it works and apologies for my mixing skills I am still very new to this recording lark and I am learning as i go along, but I am really getting the bug. :)

^ I really like both of those :) Charic: I think yours is off to a great start. Nicely composed and sounds good too. Looking forward to hearing the rest of it! Steve: I love the ambience of this one. In answer to your question I think it definitely works... it's maybe even my favourite track of yours so far, but that could just be down to my personal taste (you might think otherwise). I wouldn't worry about the mix at all - it sounds fine mate and nothing stood out to me as needing any major correction.
Can anyone recommend a good free Harp VST, or harp containing orchestra VST? My simple post-metal track has taken an unexpected turn...
Liking the sound of this! - and Rob's "church organs and sh*t" (mentioned above). I think Garry (Lowdown) posted a link to some free orchestral VSTs last month. I'm not on my home 'puter but I'll dig out the link for you early next week if I remember, unless he gets here first...
Things are coming together, I appear to be way out of my comfort zone, and having to simplify it down. There are a lot of voice notes on my phone, largely of me humming tunes and their harmonies... hope I can play them...
That sounds exactly like my phone! I've got truckloads of voice memos with me humming stuff on them... some recorded in, ahem, shall we say less than savoury locations. Well, when you gotta go, you gotta go ;)

OK here's mine - I took inspiration from my trips to Norway in recent years - especially in the middle of winter, when it gets insanely cold - when the beauty of the snow and ice give way to some serious partyng (drinking) as it's the only way to keep warm at -12!

Hope you enjoy it - love to hear your comments on it - let me know what you think....

That's pretty great, nice melding of the crazy synth stuff and the more restrained jazzy stuff.

I need some assistance with mine, annoyingly my right ear has decided to get bunged up so everything's a lot quieter in the right ear and high freqs are a lot woolier. This makes mixing a little arduous to say the least, especially as my usual method is just to pan stuff hard left and right then adjust the levels till it sounds good. I think I've found a workaround, but I'd appreciate comments on the balance in this rough mix of the first section:

I have managed to record a resemblance of a composition and am reasonably confident of getting an entry in this month, but still consider myself very much a novice in composing, recording and mixing.

My daughter asked to listen to what I had done so far , so I duly hit the play button in Reaper so she could hear it , a short while later she offers both her critique and help in mixing the work . whats more , judging by her observations, I think she understands some of the issues in my efforts

Now I must say in my defence , she has learnt a bit of Cubase ( at school) , BUT , she is 12 years old , apparantly DAW is on the learning spectrum at that age now , all we did in music at that age was listen to an album that someone in the class brought in.

I am a composition virgin no more , my first entry , ooh er missus , I have really enjoyed having a go at this , thanks for all the help I have had so far , I am sure I will be back fo more .
I don't totally understand, but the soundcloud mix I have uploaded does sound a bit different to my original, I think my synth sounds are a bit brighter.

What's the closing date for entries this month?
I only ask cos this one is getting away from me and needs a lot of attention to finish, and I have stuff to do with the wife over the next couple of weeks, and some holiday owing from work (seriously considering taking time off work to finish this, how screwed up is that?)
:)
21st...
Yikes! Damn you February and your lack of days!!

Sounds like many of us are in a tailspin this month, myself included. Well done to Stephen, Mr Stone, Urb and Lurks for getting the job done thus far - good work fellas.

I should have mine done by the 21st, but whether it's strictly 'finished' is another matter. I'm messing around with some odd time signatures (well, odd for me ), which is proving fun but has slowed down my workflow as I'm having to get my head around lots of new stuff.
