............Sunny Mancunian Recommended Amp Technicians...................
Just had my ABM serviced/repaired with DAVE LUNT whos based in Stockport...0161 432 9698.
Dave seems to be a bit of a Wizard with Ashdowns (IC and Valve) and very reasonable Pricewise.
Reasonably Quick Turnaround, Would Definately Recommend, Great Service.
Thanks Dave!
Martin.

Used it in rehearsal tuesday night!...Definately Sorted! :) ....

If you are looking for someone in the East of England, Pete @ Sonic Fix is a top chap to deal with for this kind of thing - lives in Horning (hoho!) out in the sticks about 10 miles from Norwich. Has a fully kitted out workshop, nice fella. Also did a cracking setup job on my Musicmaster.
Mike Swain at Panic Music

http://www.panicmusic.co.uk/

The UKs only official Ampeg repair centre, they do virtually all types of amps, PAs, mixers etc.

Very busy so worth booking in advance
Got my SVT back from them today oh my God I can't believe how good my amp sounds again they replaced A LOT of parts and got her back to her original glory and run it at full power for 3 hours to test it before they sent it back very well packed.

I can't say about reliability yet but so far so good.

Cheers Muppet.
Add Kingfisher music in Fleet.

They have an onsite workshop in store and Colin is a genius
Hmm interesting... I've always found them to be patronising, over-priced and unhelpful.

That's ever since I bought my first (and last) bass from them 25 years ago!

They have done my guitarists amp and two of mine over the last 12 months reasonable prices and good turn round. I picked one up today, repaired with a new transformer, turnround time 3 days.

I cant comment about prices as they are a bit out of my way and ive never bought a bass from there.

I'd recommend Steve Rowse in Godalming - bit closer to you and as he works from home, he's a lot more reasonable. Done 4 or 5 amps of mine.

I've finally got round to having someone look at the Acoustic 120 I bought (non working) a couple of years ago. They've had it over a week and haven't even looked at it yet. So, does anyone know of a decent tech in or around Leicester? As this would only be a spare amp and cost peanuts, I don't want to travel too far or pay too much!

Cheers,

Mark.
Plus 2000. I took an Ampeg SVT IIP preamp to him yesterday for repair. I bought it from the states as they are quite rare in this country.
After two weeks of it working, it started to make spluttering, static, popping noises. On the recommendations of various Basschatters I took it to Dave.
Entering Daves workshop is an experience in itself, an American radio station was playing Blues in the background and a look around the subterranean workshop overwhelmed the senses with many beautiful vintage amps adorning its floor space.

Get on with it! :)

OK, the pre, after a lengthy examination was pretty tired, it was still producing a signal but the problem was a mix of dry solder joints, transformer repair, resistors and tubes replaced. So after a complete circuit test and three and a half hours of work, it was collected today and sounds ten times better than when I first got it.
He has transformed it, it is the SVT sound that I was after and now it will be reliable after its complete rebuild.

It was a bit of a trek for me but I don't think I will take this kind of equipment anywhere else after today.
I'd just like to post up a recommendation for Dave Lund too. I used him based on the advice given on this site and was 100% satisfied with the result.
For those of us North of the border I can highly recommend -

Dennis is a Mesa Boogie specialist and approved repairer, like most of these guys he is a tad eccentric but nicely so. His preamps are the mutts nutts but are not cheap. He's one of the old school who repairs things so they work, not just to make money, if that makes sense. He takes pride in what he does and goes beyond what you'd expect him to do.

Dennis is THE MAN, an absolute Guru! He also lives & breathes Sound City. He's the guy who fired up my ex-Noddy Holder Hiwatt after it had been unused totally in a damp lock-up for about 17 years!

Thanks mate, but Guildford is a bit far out for me to get to! (am based in Bournemouth with no car)

Theres a shop in Southampton imaginatively called The Guitar Store who outsource broken amps to their amp tech, unfortunutely I guess this means it makes it more expensive, they charge £60 just to look at the amp before anythings even done to it!

So would rather go to someone direct.

But I suppose I could pull some strings with friends and get over to Guildford if all else fails :)

This reply is probably too late to be of any use, but John Gill at jxg guitars is good and very reasonable price-wise...
Just thought I'd let you know about Steve at Musical Electronic Repairs and Spares in Birmingham. He's located up a set of stairs at the top of a door next to Sound Control. Cracking bloke, who is a nice guy and is knowledgeable on all amps. He's one of these sort that doesn't have to advertise, kept in business by word-of-mouth...

He turned round a full service on Hartke within about 2 days and it sounded lovely afterwards. He's only open on Mon, Thurs and Saturday so give him a call before popping up!

I'm very surprised to see a negative comment about Gee Electronics! It's strange (suspicious?) because they are just not the type of place that would send you away unhappy... I've been to them more than once and they always do a fantastic job.

The first time was with the first amp I ever bought. I got it from Micro Music on Smithdown Rd (which has now gone :)). The speaker in it died so I called them asked them if they could fix it and they said no, but suggested Gee. I went there and they sorted it out for me quickly and cheaply. The most recent time was with my most recent amp, a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. It was the same service. It was done by a fella called Barry this time and he did it really quick and cheap, but the job they do is so good as well. You would never know that anyone had ever touched my amp. All the screws are in immaculate condition still, so it's just like it was when I took it in, only it now works

I got to speak to John Gee himself and his knowledge about all this hardware is unbelievable. Whether it's guitars, microphones, amps, or even video cameras, he really knows his stuff and he is obviously really passionate about it too.

For what it's worth, I double checked the quote they gave me with another amp repair guy and Gee's price was lower. So it's the cheapest, it's the best, and it's no surprise that they deal with pretty much every musicy place in the north west (and even people down south send stuff up to him apparently). The rehearsal rooms I play at (Crash), and the recording studio I've used (Elevator), all get their stuff done at Gee, and it's no surprise. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I'm lucky he is practically on my doorstep too.
