Hey guys,

i'm looking into getting a new bass and ive decided to venture into the land of the 5 string, mainly for playing rock/ metal type stuff, probably looking at spending about £800 and quite like these so far:

Warwick Corvette/ Streamer
Musicman Stingray
Sandberg? (havent heard a bad thing about them on here)

are there any others you guys can recommend?

Yamaha BB1025X is the bass you are looking for!

I used a BB415 in my last band (kinda stoner rock) and it fit in perfectly. With both pickups on it sounds like a cross between a P and a J on steroids. There's a BB425 going cheap in the for sale section too, but the BB1025 is a step up in quality and matches your budget.

If you can find a 2nd hand 5-string Corvette $$ for 800 notes then you'll have something perfect for metal than can also be tamed to suit other genres.
I have one, and a 5 string Stingray and several other 5's, and if I had a metal gig lined up, the Warwick would be my 'go to' bass!

Edited for dodgy spelling.

...2nd hand...

Oh... Yes.
Second Hand.
I Scored a Warwick Fortress Masterman 5 for just over 500 quid on here. Has a little bit of wear & tear, but is solid as a wok, and plays perfectly. An SR5 will set you back £800ish, but is still a good bet.

I still love Ray 5s they just get the job done, I always feel the same about Lakland 55-02s too :)

My Ray 5 is my dream bass and the bass I currently play daily... but the Warwick is a very close 2nd for completely different reasons... for metal the Ray just doesn't have enough sting IMO. The Corvette has a brighter tone that can be eq'd to sound harsh if desired!

Of course it's all down to opinion... Anything shortlisted by the OP would more than get the job done!

Have you thought about the Warwick Rockbass option?

I have but i wanted something with a bit better build quality, plus with the active/passive switching on the german one will give me alot more tonal options etc.

oh, and you can get a secondhand german for roughly the same price as the rockbass retails for

My choice would be either the Musicman or the Ibanez SR1205, the Ibanez will do everything the Warwick will do and is lighter and has a more consistant neck. The spec, sound, playability & build quality is outstanding. Lakland is also a good 5 string choice.

The best wisdom I can pass on is to beware headstock snobbery, try them all ...and then decide!

Are there any players you particularly like the sound of?

I'd personally go with a Stingray 5 out of the basses you've mentioned, as I think they cut through mixes nicely in louder/heavier bands, plus they have a great low B. Also as White Cloud mentioned, Lakland make good 5 string basses with a cracking low B.

I was in the same situation as you for a while, but I landed on the bass I have now (and the one that is for sale, see sig) because of the tight string spacing. For rock stuff it's great but for fast licks in metal music it's undoubtedly one of the best. I am going to replace this one I have now with a cheaper one, as I don't gig this and it's too good not to be played. :)

If you're happy to buy secondhand I'd also look out for a Spector Euro 5LX.

I'd gone through a few five strings & hadn't found anything I liked enough to keep & had pretty much decided to stick to four strings until I took a chance on a secondhand Spector Euro 5LX that was for sale on the forum.
It's now the only bass I own - I've sold a couple of very expensive Zon four strings that I never thought I'd get rid of because the Spector is just so good I didn't touch them anymore.
The Spector, in my opinion, made the Stingray 5 I owned briefly seem like a cheap toy by comparison.
