I want to insure my bass

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I need some advice about insuring my yamaha trb6p mk1. I have up to £2000 pounds cover with the MU and was wondering how much I should list the yamaha for? I don't know how much they cost when it was made as i was a 1 year old haha. I bought it for £900 from a fellow basschatter, but to get a replacement instrument of the same quailty i'm not sure how much i'd have to spend :S any advice on this would be great.

Cheers!!

Have a look on ebay.

I insure with Allianz. Very good company - I use their litigation insurance too and they pay up when they are supposed to. Can't ask for more than that!

thanks for the advice.

Try Newmoon Insurance, they specialise in music gear and offer great cover at sensible prices.

I'm with New Moon, and they've been amazing (although thankfully I haven't had to claim yet!). Not only is the price great, but so is the customer service. They're fairly small so you get quite a personal service. They haven't charged me for changing my gear (unless of tcourse the value has increased my premium), and have generally been very helpful. They're underwritten by Hiscox, who apparently wanted to start a specialist instrument insurance company, so you know the cover's good.

Anyway, I normally insure all my gear for the value of brand new replacements.

Can i find out what it is you are insuring against? When i queried the insurers it turns out that in reality the equipment isn't insured in any useful way, ie theft from car.

For me, if the bass isn't in the car i am usually not very far away from it where it is tucked up next to my amp on a secure stand on a stage.

I am just wondering what exactly you could claim for?

This!

I used to have all my gear covered then over the years the premium went up and the cover came down, the final straw was when the unattended vehicle cover was removed from the policy. I now either stay with the gear or take at least my basses with me if its a function gig where we need to leave and come back later, just take one bass for a sound check if its going to be a case of going home before returning. In most cases its going to be nicked from a loaded van/car or during the loading/unloading process or from the venue if you leave the gear to go for a pint after practice etc, I now either dont go for the pint or take the bass with me, the pre EB is never more than 10 feet away from me unless Im at work or on holiday :)

Accidental damage is a concern but to be honest any dings are just mojo in the name of not being a bedroom bassist so other than a neck in half I cant see as I would claim even then I know a man who can repair anything at a reasonable price.

Strange coincidence, last night at a practice for a dep gig at a wedding this Saturday they tell me to try and get my gear over to the guitarist or drummers house so they can set up Friday day time and leave it all in a village hall in the middle of nowhere until 9pm kickoff on the Saturday! No chance I told them.

I am fairly certain that the New Moon policy insures the gear wherever it is, left at rehearsal room, in the car or at a venue. That is what attracted me to it.

The only time the bass is covered seems to be when you're actually holding it.

If it were me i'd want to be 100% certain otherwise whats the point?

Agreed - I have not bought it yet!! Looked at them late last year and then did nothing about it but I remember at the time that they offered a lot more cover than the NFU do for named items on my household policy.

I am looking at them again now so will confirm what they cover later today.

The last time I looked at specialist musical instrument insurance this seem to be the case. Even in our rehearsal space which was on the 3rd floor with 4 heavy duty locked doors between it and the street, the gear wasn't covered because we didn't have bars on the window!

Been checking this out with New Moon today and they advise the following:

Me: Can you remind me if the guitars and other gear would be covered if left in a rehearsal room for a week at a time and also if set up and left at a venue for a few hours?

Them: As long as the rehearsal room was locked then no problem.

With regards to being left at a venue, if the event organisers advise you to leave them set up then yes, if left otherwise unattended then the room needs to be locked

Me: Does that mean that if the event organisers requested them to be left then they would be liable and you would not pay out if anything was stolen?

Them: No –not at all. We would pay for the claim, as long as it was at the venues direction to be left where they are (i.e. on stage, green room, storage room etc)

Hope that helps the discussion a little chaps!!

I asked New Moon LOTS of questions when I took out my policy. The "theft from an unattended vehicle" thing is like on your normal car insurance really: if you've left something valuable in plain sight, they wouldn't pay out. However, New Moon advised me that as long as I'd taken all reasonable steps to conceal the gear, and it wasn't blatantly obvious what it was, they would pay out. The example we used was that if you had a bass on the back seat with some sort of cover/blanket/sheet over it, they would pay out.

I also quizzed them about the usually grey area of theft whilst loading/unloading. I said what happens if I'm loading the car after a gig, take something out to the car and when I walk back into the venue my bass has gone. They said they would pay out, and process it as a straight forward theft.

AFAIK New Moon have been set up and underwritten by Hiscox specifically to be a specialist Musical Instrument insurer, and I think they're trying to out-do most of the competition and try to establish themselves as the best. Most other companies who do MI insurance do everything else too, and I think that New Moon are very customer focused and are able to concentrate 100% on meeting the needs of musicians.

This is still too ambiguous for me, who counts as the events organiser, The brides mother at the village hall?

This is whats swaying me, I'm currently with MusicGuard and the cover is excellent but my renewal is £110 for £4k worth of stuff, on NewMoon it's £60. Can any one tell me if the NewMoon PLI covers the other musicians who are on the stage with you? As Thats what MG's PLI includes.

That's not what they told me 2 weeks ago. They told me that it only covers you and that they don't do PLI for groups. I asked this specific question as we have been asked for PLI for a wedding we are playing at next month.
