thepurpleblob Posted December 24, 2011 Share Posted December 24, 2011 (edited) Hi, I'm trying to track down a five string which is much more like a four (spacing wide) than most fives seem to be. Even if they are 19mm at the bridge they still seem to get down to very fiddly at the nut (9mm seems common as compared with 12mm on an average 4 string). I have big hands and although I *can* play a five I find most of them too closely spaced at the nut. Any bright ideas for what might suit. Even better if anybody has something for sale (have around 900 quid to spend). Any thoughts very much appreciated. I know it is a little smaller, but it doesn't seem like much of a difference. I'd hazard a guess that you have already tried this route so that post may have been useless. It's basically a 4-string P-bass with a 5th string added, so everything made "one string wider" - nut, neck, pickups, bridge. Utterly superb bass, but you'll not get one for less than £2000 and they come up very rarely indeed. As a cheaper alternative, and if you're OK with a 35" scale, had you considered a Lakland Jo Osborn? deepbass5 Posted December 26, 2011 Share Posted December 26, 2011 I did manage to pick up both my streamer and shucker for a grand second hand they do come up, but the Lakland and Yamahas are a good safe bet for good string spacing and thinner front to back than the warwick so easier to play up the neck.
