John Mayer...great bass players.

Just having a listen to a John Mayer track called 'No Such Thing' through headphones which I don't often use. I was struck by the excellent interesting bass line on this track. Having only recently become interested in John Mayer's music I have noticed that he seems to use great bass players like Pino Palladino. Anyone aware of any other notable bass contributions in his music?

Cheers, Have a good Sunday,

Mark.

The bass player on the early stuff I believe is David "DeLa" LaBruyere. I first saw him on Mayers first live DVD and he is a monster player. His bass lines on that first album Room for Squares and on that live DVD are busy but so melodic and in keeping with Mayers writing on that album it really makes the music for me, really drives it along. Check out the concert if you get a chance, I think DeLa is on the last live DVD as well but got a bit over shaddowed by Pino. Shame really as he is a great inspiration to me and a superb bass player.

[/quote]The best strap locks IMO. No squeaking, no drilling, no having to remember the correct strap. Plus there's beer involved, wins all round :)

Absolutely, I've been using them for years. I prefer the old style rubbery variety compared to the newer plasticky style. But you're right - either way, free beer with each straplock purchased :)

Phenomenal. I've met Pino a couple of times over the years, he's physically and musically a giant, but a real gent with it. He's doesn't take any sh*t, though - there's the old story that The Stones asked him to have a meeting after Bill Wyman left, where he was effectively 'auditioned', and then turned down. He promptly sent them an invoice... :)

The Stones are idiots for turning Pino down for anything other than some kind of scheduling conflict. I couldn't name you a better suited bass player as Wyman's replacement! Darryl Jones does a fine job and is a marvelous musician, but even Anthony Jackson has commented on the shadow that Pino casts over session work being nothing less than intimidating. Coming from (IMO) the best bass player in the world, that's high praise.

Since this video was my introduction to John Mayer (a year ago or whatever) I always had him pegged as a power trio guy, but it looks like his acoustic/vocal stuff predominates (in youtube videos at least).

Which of his albums should I be looking at for the rockier stuff like this video ?

To be honest most of Mayers stuff is quite middle of the road. I love a lot of his stuff but some of it recently has got a bit bland. The first proper album room for squares is superb, great acoustic guitat work and lovely basslines. For rockier type stuff the only album really is Try, by the john mayer blues trio which is Mayer, Pino and Steve Jordan.
