He learned bass at StoneyHurst school in 1980. One of his bands were, The exploding Hamsters.
There are a few pics of him avec bass in his biography. Cant find any online.

He was my replacement in a Cambridge band called somewhere in the foreign office. Yes I know.
Not only was he a much better bassist than me, he's a lot funnier. The baxterd.
I was reading an article the other day which said that Keanu Reeves out of the matrix is left handed but plays the bass right handed apparently.
Even if he plays it with his left foot, he'll still be a better bass player than he is an actor. :)

I heard he played bass for zappa, am I wrong?
anyways getting back to Clunes, I seem to remember his character in ITV's "William and Mary" had him as a Bass Player. he did guest with Gary Numan on one gig playing "cars", or so some bloke down the pub says.
Steve Coogan once asked me if he could play my bass once ( he was "inspired" I said no )
Richard Hammond off "Top Gear"...but then you knew that didn't you?
I was thinking Hammond too, I was on a TV show with him when I was about 12 and he had his bass in the 'Green room' - but that was before I started, so I wasn't really interested...
-_-

I remember reading in Bass Player years ago that part of the act involved him playing a walking bassline
which Will Lee wrote for him. He also played(still does?) in a band called,I think, Captain Howdy.
I was at this....Hammond bass,May on keys, Clarkson (useless) on drums. To be fair he only just learnt drums for this, Hamster and May both been playing for years. Was a cracking night, met the guys, had a great chat with Clarkson...top bloke!

great top gear moment that.
Jezza reminds me of a drummer I used to play with as a younger man who we used to call Dr Who and (on occasion) Corporal Jones if you watch them doing the "drill" in Dads Army youll see what I mean.
that Drummer went on to be Sh*t hot player and totally showed us up for our sneeers, so the story has a happy end.
I dont think Jez can say the same
