Anthony Jackson 1996

Jackson is left with no nuts after grooving them off w. Robben Ford (guitar), Jimmy McGriff (organ), Bernard Purdie (drums), and the horn section of Phil Woods (alto), Bob Berg (tenor) and Art Farmer (trumpet). If you don't 'get' it, you have no pulse.

I think Anthony Jackson is one of the few bass players that I would describe as one of the greatest players of all time. Amazing bassist!

[quote name='Bilbo' post='1260729' date='Jun 8 2011, 08:47 AM']And this one has a really great bass solo from the master himself. 1980 - No Fodera, but he still sounds like AJ.

I can never get enough of AJ's Bass playing, always right on it.
I still love listening to those 80's Japan concerts, with the likes of Grusin, Gadd, LA big band etc.

Some great posts on this thread.

+1 he looks great! I wonder how he did it? (I am thinking it may even be easier for me to copy his weight loss than even dare to try and get in the same playing league!!) LOL

Anyone heard the new Hiromi album with him on yet?

Yes the new Hiromi album is great - it's probably her best for ages in fact, AJ is killing on it, just grooving like a mutha and nailing all the unison lines in his own particularly cool way - his b-lines and backup playing is its usual impeccable/inspiring self - well worth getting hold of.

FYI he's in London for three nights in July with Hiromi and Steve Smith at Ronnie Scott's - I've seen Hiromi live several times and she's always great value, and I've been lucky to hear AJ twice (once at the 55 Bar with Wayne Krantz and Keith Carlock, which was amazing) and once with Mike Stern at Ronnie's - based on those performances I think these trio gigs will be killing:

Also another new AJ album that's well worth checking out is with him back with Steve Khan and Dennis Chambers on an album called 'Parting Shot' - it's very cool stuff - like a slightly more laid back version of the Eyewitness band - but full of great group improv and really musical grooves - more on that here:

I'll be at one of the Hiromi gigs - so maybe see some of you there

Thanks Mike:

I've got the CD on pre-order so really looking forward to it. Now I need to see if I can make one of those gigs should be great.

Seen Hiromi a couple of time too with Tony Grey on bass -- he great too!

Another great lp with AJ on was called French Toast. Mostly Michel Camilo tunes but a bigger band with horns. Worth looking for.

Peter Gordon – french horn
Lew Soloff – trumpet
Jerry Dodgion – alto sax
Michel Camilo – piano
Anthony Jackson – bass
Dave Weckl – drums
Steve Gadd – drums
Sammy Figueroa – percussion
Gordon Gottlieb – percussion

IIRC he lost that weight as he needed an operation. Not sure how he did it but he put it back on pretty fast!

Anyway, I was thinking of the track below earlier today. It's from one of Simon Phillips solo albums. Simon is a fantastic drummer who played with Big Country at one point. He has some great fusion chops, and Anthony's playing on this tune is amazing. It's huge and listening to him is often akin to like having a grand piano churning away in the background when he hits some of those low notes. This is great fusion too, very tuneful and groovy.

Now that I would be good at!! :)

Not come across that Simon Phillips track before (nice), but it is him with AJ on that new Hiromi CD (Voice).

Brilliant OP, that man. If it doesn't get you dancing in your chair, call an undertaker :)
It was a favourite of Pete Young's back when Jazz FM was good (especially after 10pm).

Killer line-up too, had no idea it was Robben Ford.

Such a great player AJ.

I saw Fodera had an Anthony Jackson Presentation bass available this week as a customer had a medical problem that meant he couldn't play it.

It was a 'fully loaded' version with titanium bridge and truss rod - these babies sell at $24,000 new and I'm sure this one would have been pretty close to that price. . .

. . .It sold in under 30 minutes from when it was first listed as being available. :)
