castlemaine22 Posted March 19, 2011 Share Posted March 19, 2011 (edited) I currently have a Yamaha TRB 1005 and I am looking to get a new 5 string very soon. I am pretty set on a MM Stingray 5 which i played this week, I was blown away by the way they play and sound. I was wondering if there are any other basses that I should try in the same price range (£1000 - £1500) before I commit to buying, but more importantly, where I can get a chance to test them. I am based in Leeds and in my experience it is difficult to come across basses in this price range, so I am willing to travel to a more specialist bass shop. A few that have caught my eye include Overwater aspiration Deluxe 5 and the G&L L2500. I mainly play rock, metal and a bit of funk, I am not gigging at the moment but might be in the future. stingrayPete1977 Posted March 20, 2011 Share Posted March 20, 2011 Gut instinct for the win, I did the same by trying my Ray5 then every other five I could that day, Then just went back to the first shop to get the Ray I played in the beginning there were lots of other nice ones but none seamed as versatile overall. The Laklands for example were very nice and I'm sure if the budget had been a few hundred less I would of took it and loved it but for out and out power the Ray just blew it away, I await the mine is more growler than a Ray comments but they just aren't and there not supposed to be they have there own great sounds but from the OP the Ray sounds like the tool to me. TRBboy Posted March 20, 2011 Share Posted March 20, 2011 Might be worth checking out Sandberg too. I bought one recently after being blown away by them. The Basic series is more original I suppose, and the California's are more traditional, but they're all great. All hand built (apart from cutting rough body shape), quality materials and great electronics with a variety of pickup options and finishes. I and certainly a lot of people here will verify that, if you get a Ray, you won't be disappointed! +1 on the Sandbergs to. I love my basic 4 fretless. risingson Posted April 4, 2011 Share Posted April 4, 2011 The Stingray 5 is a great instrument, I've played a lot of them and came very close to buying one myself recently. But I'd also look at the Lakland 55-02's like BB5 mentioned, those things are incredible, I can opt for the Lakland Skyline build quality being very good as well IMO. Alternatively, check to see if you can find any Lakland Darryl Jones 5's around, they've been discontinued but are brilliant, brilliant basses.
