vintage fenders

after my weekend at leeds festival ive had an uncontrollable desire for a beat up old fender
i dont know what it is about them that makes me want them but the more beat up it is the more i want it

Yep, they get to you like that. You just know it's going to always be with you, like an itch you can't scratch until you buy one, too

Find a good one and they're fabulous basses, but there [i]are[/i] some dogs out there, just because it's a "vintage" Fender doesn't mean it's any good, just overpriced.

I'm with you on a beat up Fender.

Refinished ones are much cheaper and therefore as long as they have been refin with nitro paint a long time ago or aged then they should be good. Precisions are cheaper than Jazzes.

£1500 for a late 70's Precision? From a period of time when Fenders were notoriously poor. That's overpriced to me.

There are some really nice 70s Fenders, [i]really[/i] nice, but 2 grand for a Jazz? Nope, that's silly money in my book, for a bass that was put together from boxes of random stock parts from a handful of different years. My 78/79 Precision was a case in point, parts from at least 2 different years, and not exactly put together with love and care from what I could see. Nice bass, but it only cost me £800, that's [i]much[/i] more sensible price in my book.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a nice 70s Jazz, but I just couldn't ever afford to buy one, and more to the point, I refuse to part with the money people are asking for them. A grand for a JV Squier?? No chance.

Of course, I'm sure there [i]are[/i] some fabulous 70s Fenders, in fact I know there are, and if you're happy to fork out the asking prices I've seen, well, you've got more money than I have. The 1990 MIJ Squier Precision I bought for 200 quid was head and shoulders above many of the 70's Fender I've tried.

I think that with each passing year, a 1970s Fender gets more and more expensive, so if you want one you might as well buy one if you have the funds. IF you find a good one of course. No point in my opinion spending £2000 on a vintage bass if it plays and sounds worse than a new Fender, Sandberg etc. If you find a good one though, you will probably keep it for life, unless you don't really like Fender basses, in which case you should perhaps question why you bothered spending extra for a vintage bass.

if i found a vintage fender that i fell in love with and it felt good id buy it providing i had the money for it regardless of how much it cost

I'm with you on that one. Had a 57 P bass JV - first issue, it was a lovely bass but I wouldn't have one over say a new US one.

I've been half thinking about a beat up 70's Fender but I'd be just as happy with a relic'd Sandberg.

I'm sure I could get close to that for mine, if it were for sale. I know it's absolutely stock and original, because I bought it new in 76 and haven't changed it in any way since then. Apart from the pickup foam. And a few pickguard screws (hi, Howard!) Plus, it's a player. But of course, at the time it wasn't vintage.

I've got a "notoriously poor" late 70s precision and it's very good - honestly. Well, that's if you ignore the shoddy paint job and it being a bit on the heavy side The sound is like nothing else though. I still wouldn't pay much more than you get a new one for, though. That's just mental, it's still only a bass.

I`d love an old beat-up Fender Precision. Altho I`m not overly "precious" with my current basses, I wouldn`t deliberately knacker them, but there`s just something about a beat-up Fender - prob why the Roadworn series has been so successful, even tho in my view, up close they don`t actually look that old. Before any Roadworn lovers think I don`t like these basses, I do, they play fantastic, just in my view they look new/old.

Yup, I liked the look of the 66 P bass in the original link [url="http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/our-catalogue/Fender/Electric-Basses/item/6818"]http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/6818[/url] and thought it might be a bit more affordable as it's been modded, it looks knackered and is a CBS. Went off the idea very quickly when they told me how much they wanted for it.

I bought a cab from a guy a couple of years ago, and while I was at the guys house picking it up, he showed me his 78 precision that he had also just sold on ebay. He sold it for £695, which he thought was pretty good (I was a bit peeved cos I valued mine at double that) He reckoned it was due to the colour. It was a fairly vile orange sunburst, the like of which, I'd never seen before or since!

I guess they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

they do seem to go for silly money. Given how depressed the for sale bit of the forum is at the mo i was surpriesed to see a '57 JV squier with the fender logo go for £1100 the other week.
I have an identical one and I wouldn't pay that much for it.
But then it is an amazing bass, and better than any recent fenders I've tried, the AV '52 ri came close in feel but didn't sound as good.
