What you're looking for is a distortion/overdrive with a blend function or one that retains low-end. Is there a blend function on your multi?
Do you know what? I dont know. I use effects very little so dont really know my way around the board. I did have a sansamp bass driver which was ok, but not great. I was a enclined to say that maybe the only way to get the sound was through a full tube head. I will have a look for a blend on my board, that would be a good starting point i guess. Maybe then i could just have an increase in that patches volume.

Gig this number all the time, but never look forward to playing it. Always try to get as much out of the bass with my fingers but its hit and miss as to weather or not it sounds ok. Never sounds great. I have a boss me-8b. How can i get a good sound for this number? Whenever i use the fuzz/distortions the bass drops out. I use the fuzz with the octaver for a muse number and it sounds great (D octave and higher) . But when played in the hives song which is open A it does not sound so good. Not that i am looking for the same sound, i just need to beef up the overdrive or something. If i am looking at this from the wrong angle please help me out.

This looks great, can any of you jap anoraks give us some insight into this bass? Ta very much. ebay link -
Look, im not out to hijack the link, but i have a similar problem with really well made bass MTD z5, with an aguilar pre and nordstrand pups. Cant get enough aggression out of it. Beautifully bassey and loadsa tonal variation and a gem to play, but it just cant cut through like my Aria sb900. Although it is fatter and bassier sounding. I know you are familiar with Arias, does this sound like a similar situation? With referance to Si-bob, would changing pups do the job, and which ones would do it? BUMP for slight tangent, but really interested in your thoughts.

Get anything you can, keep it for a few months- shift it and get another and do it again and again until you know what it is you really want from a bass. The FS section on Basschat is great and makes this an easy thing to do. I wish i had the oppertunity to do this when i began. Since i have been on here, like many others, i have been through a few basses and i am getting closer to knowing what i really want through this method. Good luck.
Can anyone come up with a sensible suggestion as to which one to go for?
Not really, i reckon they are all good. Not that i know that for sure though. I did have a programable sansamp, which was pretty good i guess, but only for getting a dirtier sound IMO. Good at it nonetheless. But, as they are all so good, i would opt for the practicality of the J-retro. It can be adjusted to your liking mid song, no bending down and feeling pressured to get your sound to your liking within 5 seconds. For this reason, the onboard wins hands down.

+1 on the GT4. Really good stingray sound. I found the laqured neck the only disappointing thing on that bass really, but very playable. The sound was the best i have found for sub £200.
A lot of the above has tickled me but not as much as this quote from T.M.Stevens, 'John Entwistle told me, “All you guys play this widdly-woo stuff I can’t play, but I’ll be remembered forever because I play songs.”' Each to their own but I'd take his tone anytime from 1969-86 over any widdly-wooer current or deceased.
Couldnt agree more. Watched an Entwistle tribute last night and although it was never going to slate the Ox, it showed quite clearly that he was a pioneer and a particularly distinctive one at that. Townsend had nothing but praise for his ability, he basically said that his guitar and the songs would never have sounded good without John, ultimatley without him the Who would not have been. His sound is awesome. It cuts through and gets heard.

I love my 35" scale MTD zepher 5. Reviewed in this months bass guitar mag, although i have not seen it. All i can say about mine is i got it at a great price, spammed up with nordstrand and aguilar goodies, a real looker with maple board and cherry red finish. The best "feeling" bass i have played has been a stingray, and this is just as good in the way it feels-quality. As for the sound that maybe more specific to your tastes. When played on just the neck it sounds very p-like. If you can get your hands on one to try, i would say to you, give it a go. £1K is a lot to spend on a bass. Second hand all the way for me, at least twice as much for your money. Also i have had a G&L trib 4. Value for money S/H this wins hands down on most but then it is not as good as the MTD Z5. Nor is it as good as most that have been mentioned. But not by that much IMO.

FWIW, i am in heaven with the sound of mine. It has an aguilar pre and nordstrand pups. But i cant compare with the stock sound as i bought it with the bits already on it.
That's the point! I know its strange, but I heard a lot about the Z5 with bartolini or nordtrand preamps and I'm courious if I can get a better sound with the bartolini solution since i have it in my desk... I like the sound, but if bart preamp gets even better i'll install it. Thats why I'm asking for opinions from people who have done the same.
Stiil waiting for a review of your z5!
