1. I hear this! Another thing that did my head in is playing gigs with the bass being DI'd and hearing god awful sounding bass overdrive (hissy, no low end) coming from the monitors
2. Not being patronising, but to clear things up (in my opinion): Everyone is entitled to an opinion, even if it's short. i thought the ODB3 i owned was a piece of sh*te to be blunt, however i hated it because i found it to sound somewhat thin and the settings that worked well with 2 guitarists and a drummer used to feedback like hell... BUT i used to get some wicked lead sounds out of it when used with some wah. to know the true extent of effects, you need to play around with every setting possible, try different basses, playing styles, amps and of course in a band situation. for example i thought i found bass overdrive heaven by using 3 pedals for my overdrive sound... it was amazing through both my little practice combo and my gig rig... however, with a full band in the mix, it got lost... hella fast. bassmankev, i know that every now and then there's some sparks on this forum but seriously try running your board through a proper bass rig and you will know exactly what i'm talking about. My RogerMayer Voodoobass sounds a bit "bleh" through my combo... running it through my rig live with a band, it cuts through really well, retains all my low end and fills out our sound really well. My old secondary school used to have that Torque 30W combo, and to be frank, it is a really thin sounding amp, even for a combo. Trust me, run your board through say, a 500w Ashdown, Trace, Ampeg etc rig and you'll be shocked at how different all of your effects will sound (some will sound worse, some will sound better). sorry if i'm coming across as a t*at, it's just this forum is all about sharing experiences, and i'm just putting forward my experiences with effects in different situations to the op, sorry I can't really come out with any decent suggestions because i've been up all night.. no sleep and i'm pretty wired from all of the nicotine and caffeine coursing through my veins lol.
3. Hi guys, need some cash because I'm moving into my student house next week and I'm pretty much skint lol. First off an Akai SB1 Deep Impact synth. Bought second hand from eBay in mint condition... has a few surface scratches and velcro at the bottom which could be a plus if you already have a pedal board. ON HOLD Wobo Double Looper. True bypass looper with two loops and an inverter switch (if one loop is off, and the other is on, this switch will turn the off loop on and visaversa). This box also uses relay switches so if you were to lose power to your board, your signal will automatically be sent from input to output. Some scratches and velcro on the bottom. £25 Feel free to ask any questions BOB
4. I would post sound clips but recording through a small combo with a cheap PC mic sounds terrible... I guess you COULD get a rough idea but still, it doesn't sound particularly good. I may post sound clips when I get a new soundcard, but if you want an idea of what my board does, here goes. Bass> Korg DTbk (Tuner) > EBS Mutlicomp (Compression) > Tonefactor Eyeore (2 Looper box except it switches between 2 different loops so you don't use both at the same time) Loop 1> Analogman Clone Chorus (based on the origional EHX small clone except with a depth knob rather than a switch, true bypass and an extra depth switch to make it more deep and bassy, or more trebly and shimmery) > return Loop 2> Tonefreak Abunai 2 (basically a TS 808 overdrive circuit with a clipping switch, more gain, JRC4558 opamp etc) > Boss GEB7 Equalizer (I use this after the Abunai 2 to cut some of the mids and boost the lower frequencies some more) > Roger Mayer Voodoobass (Quite a thick, somewhat wooly bass overdrive... best example of it would be to listen to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's "Spread your Love".) > Return > Bass amp I use 3 pedals for my overdrive sound because the Voodoobass on it's own it too mushy, so after experimenting a while, I thought pushing it with a TS 808 style pedal would make it more defined and punchy... this was accurate, but then it lost a bit too much low end and added more mids than I wanted so I balanced this out with the Boss EQ).
5. Caps lock... cruise control for cool
6. I use both... use fingerstyle primarily live, but I've used a pick in the studio several times because even though I hate to admit it (I argued like hell over this till I heard the evidence), playing bass with a pick sits in the mix far better on some songs recorded than using fingers
7. Another variation... decided to have a more bread and butter board so took off the things I use the least (noise box and synth, although the noise box will be on my board of wacky sounds when i get around to building it). I also put a Boss EQ after my Abunai2 to give it some more low end. My od channel consists of my Abunai2 with EQ for grind sounds... Voodoobass on it's own for fat tubey sounds and the 3 together for really heavy, nasty OD.
8. lol! only if you book it for us ^_^
9. If you liked the Multicomp, you probably won't like the Mr. Squishy. It's more old school and isn't as transparent as the multicomp. I had an EBS multicomp, sold it, bought a Toadworks Mr. Squishy and eventually bought another multicomp. If you want a Mr. Squishy, I can sell you mine for £45 ^_^
10. Hi guys, I was at a recording studio recently and a guy there had an origional '60s Shin-ei Companion FY2. It was pretty beat up but it worked at least. Just wondering, what would be the average price for one of these pedals as the guy was quite interested in selling it after I told him that anything to do with guitar/bass made in the 60s sells for stupid money cause it's "vintage" Cheers, BOB
11. haven't a clue wat that pedal is... kinda reminds me of a tonebender. btw, of topic, but is your avatar from the anime Beck?
12. It actually sounded like w*nk when I first got it... after a setup and a change of pickups (origional high gain ceramics were horrible... changed to lower gain alnico Vs), I can say the same in that it's my only 6 string I need
13. thanks guys that's an older model Pedaltrain board (got it in a sale). Medium sized I believe. The case in the background is indeed a Gibson case... holding a '67 reissue V
14. Hey guys, pretty much finished my pedal board, just need to take the Tonefreak Abunai 2 out on a few gigs to see how it cuts through the mix Signal Chain: Bass> Korg DT10bk> EBS Multicomp> Akai Deep Impact> Tonefactor Eeyore (loop1 send> Analogman Chorus> return) (loop2 send> Roger Mayer Voodoobass> Tonefreak Abunai 2> return)> Subdecay Noisebox> Amp Sorry about the crappy pics, my phone hasn't been right since I spilled a cup of tea on it >_
15. If i was to get a fuzz, it would definately be the Subdecay Flyingtomato or the MI Audio GI Fuzz.... i'd probably get the GI Fuzz just cause it has a bright, PINK LED
16. Hey guys, been messing around with a Subdecay Noisebox and thought I'd post a few clips here. These are just a few settings (the first being alot different from the next 2, while those are slightly different, although essentially the same settings). Clip 1 is recorded with a Rick 4003, dead strings, neck pup, tone rolled off. Clips 2+3 are recorded using a Fender Am. Deluxe Pbass with flat eq, both pickups on and fresh-ish strings. All the clips are recorded using a cheapo combo and a very cheap swaneck mic. Clip 1 Clip 2 Clip 3 Kudos to anyone who recognises these tunes without reading the file names
17. Great plan Tayste! I'm up for it, PM'd!
18. If it's noisy, I assume the adaptor is an all perpose one, or a cheapo no brand jobby from maplins or radio shack? If it is, that's not surprising. Those multipurpose adaptors often have very poor filtering because they aren't specifically designed for audio equipment. Apparently, the Boss 9V adaptor's very good if you only need it for the Microbass.
19. Ste, the guitarist in my band has been using the Planet Waves tuner for a while with an adaptor, but last rehearsal, he used it with a battery and everytime he left it in his signal chain, there was this loud high pitched screeching. I don't know if that's the same as the noise you mentioned, but is there anyway to get rid of it? (appart from the obvious idea of not leaving it in the chain, or using a looper to mute it)
20. Here's my gear: Fretless early '90s MIJ Pbass: Fender US Deluxe Pbass V: Rickenbacker 4003 in BlueBurst: Fender MIJ 62 Jbass: Gibson 67 Flying V: The pedal board and rig: ^_^
21. I use an EBS multicomp... it's the best pedal I've tried without going into rackmounted territory. I only use mild compression mostly just because it evens out the dynamics of your playing which for VERY fast fills or runs is a life saver. It also evens out slap and general adds what is universaly known as "punch" to your sound. Notes seem to hit you harder and just... sound a bit phatter if you get me. Hope this helps
