2.
Word. You live on the green then bud?
yip, i live on the green. really handy for gettin to gigs cause all the decent venues are only a 2 minutes stumble home
  3. First jam was in 1983 (with friends) 6 months after i picked up a acoustic guitar with 4 nylon strings, playing flux of pink indians,uk subs and exploited basslines (the early eighties where not an easy time for actually buying basses, well not for me anyway!) first gig was 6 years later (1989)after many, many jams with various mates over the years and playing many different musical styles but after one practice with the band and practicing like a bastard to a live tape of the band so i could take over from the bass player in the band that nobody liked, and i was in that band for 8 years.
  4. aye you should try the Aberdeen music shops (there are 2 maybe 3!) miserable, unhelpful and majorley (sorry spelling police!) over priced with very little bass choice. in other words....sh*te!! i live above the main music shop in town and go in about once a week, just to see if they have anything worth bothering about and not one of them has said hello or anything, too busy speaking about some guitar or keyboard or wandering around the shop aimlessly looking for f*ck knows what!

    From The Jam

i saw them earlier in the year in Aberdeen and i thought they were great! Before the gig everybody was moaning about it only being 2/3rds of the jam but nobody was moaning after the gig. great show.
  6.
That's interesting. I wonder why. Is it that good bands are rare up here (although I can think of tons - yourselves included - Pete is a mate of mine from way back - Were you guys practising London's Burning a couple o weeks back in Musical Vision? I could hear it through the walls ) and they are 10 a penny in Glasgow. Pearl jammin
aye that was us playing London Calling , i've seen your band in drummonds, really good! we only get an average of £50 for playing drummonds or anywhere else in aberdeen, so if you need a cheap support band gie's a shout, ha ha.
  7.
It's for Saturday 2nd of Feb. LOL We had an experience similar to your Perth job (only it was a Saturday night in Rosyth) but the afterparty more than made up for it.
Have you had a gig at strathclyde uni? it is/was a cracking gig, dont know if they still do it but it a good way to get yer foot in the glasgow scene. Or the Renfrew ferry, it's a great place! money wise i've always found glasgow to be slightly different to aberdeen, ie glasgow is more grippy and less willing to take a risk with an unknown Whats the name of your band? d.
  8.
We've been offered a gig in Barfly - Glasgow (which would be a 300 mile round trip for us) but they are asking for a what I consider to be a pretty hefty split of the door. excerpt from email - "Howz about we do £6 adv / £7 door? Can we do a 50/50 split with you guys?" This is a new one on me, we either work a set fee or take all the door (minus the support's cut if we've laid them on). Is this normal or are we expected to haggle? Laughingly I told our manager that they can have 50% of the door if we get 50% of the bar.
What night is your gig on? personally i'd do it for that if it's a thurs/friday/saturday night ....but then again i was in a band that went down to perth on a tuesday night for door money and got £20.
  9.
Love it ! But then I play a P-Bass and a Ric with a pick !
+1. You cant beat it, IMO! Just listen to some basslines by Bruce Foxton.
  10.
the lack of body contour can be quite uncomfortable on the right forearm
agreed, i get a sore forearm when i play with it for too long
  11. My first bass was in 1982 and it was a Kay P bass kinda thing bought for about £70 from santas grotto but i think it actually came from my mums Marshal Ward clubby book, i 'found' it in my mums wardrobe when i was doing pre-christmas present snopping That was the year i found ALL my christmas presents before christmas
  12.
That's very cool! I guess a lot of people can't get over quite how uncool Mark King made them look, though!
cheers aye, it would still look uncool if you played it just under your chin
  13.
If I used a headless in my band I would be laughed off stage, which is a shame, as I'd like one It goes with being in a punk rock band though.
nobody laughed when i played this bass. i'm in a punk band, the bassist with Guns On The Roof played it for a gig in aberdeen and wanted to buy it. anyway, why cant you use a headless with a punk band?
  14.
I recently watched some Bass solo vid's on Youtube and I was suprised by how much they did NOT interest me.I feel like a traitor to bass players everywhere.I found I did'nt get off on extra fast shredding,or two hand taps.Slap by Wooten, sorry, not for me.I'm more impressed by a good groove or run in a song.I know that I will get some flak for this but I feel its time to come clean;to me bass is supportive.
+1. yip, i totally agree as well.
  15. I just had my hand made leather pork pie hat delivered today, so now i'm a bass player with a hat Beautiful hat it is to, made by Jill Corbett of Brighton.
  16.
PS. is the surplus apostrophe in the thread title just to annoy people like paul, the and me?
ha ha the apostrophe police are on patrol again!
  17. The band i'm in (punk covers) travel about a max of 100 miles and usually for about £50 but we only play for about 1 hour and get to support 'name' bands pretty often and have met some really cool people. We just treat away day gigs like a drunken break from the same old routine. To me its just about the fun of playing live.
  18. I never used the active electrics on my hohner jack bass custom and it still sounded great without the battery. It's for sale by the way!
  19. I think they are defo worth it but i would say that cause i have one! I get a great growling tone from mine but you do have to muck around with EQ to get it bassy and ballsy enough for heavy stuff. i got mine for just over £800.
  20. How about one of these; A nice small body and thin neck, just like my wife I'm selling this one if your interested, looking for £150. Hohner jack bass custom, through neck, EMG select pick-ups and light wieght.
  21.
I find I need to learn the bass line first and then do the backing over the top
+1 really good fun but practice practice practice! d.
  22.
To wear my roots on my sleeve I have to say - JJ Burnell - Stranglers (is he counted as underrated?) Paul Gray - Hot Rods, Damned, UFO et al Bruce Foxton - Jam William Mysterious - Rezillos Jah Wobble - PiL +1 on Gary Tibbs too Loads more really that my crappy old memory fails me on. The top four moulded my 'style' for sure Oh.. just broke my basschat virginity! yay!
Great choices. William Mysterious gave me my first shot of a bass! My best mate at schools' brother was HI-FI Harris! Shame he doesnt play with them any more, it's a guy called Johhny Terminator and he's good. d.
