1.
pearl tuners?
Always one of my favourite things, aesthetically, about the second generation of Patitucci TRB's. That said, I'd hate to knock one, I'm sure it would break them and it would be a faff trying to source another one from Yamaha!
2. The sad thing is, at £1000 they could make the same bass and I bet they'd sell plenty. It would appeal to a market of players who want 6 string range but struggle with playing a normal 6 string. This offers them something very manageable with it's narrow string spacing. Get the right hand used to the spacing and it would surely be a breeze to play. As it is, it's just a very very expensive collector's item. It doesn't even look like £5000's worth of bass, what a shame. Here is Veasley getting some decent sounds out of a custom shop Ibanez SR 6 string, anyway... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pHsEoNSkso
3. What is the price?
4. Not really my thing, but Howard's work is quality, that much can be said. I still walk past the old Bass Place now and think Newcastle needs somewhere like that again. Dingy and dark, but without the clouds of smoke, preferably!
5. For whatever reason I'd rather just play a 4 string day to day and get a 6 string out when I need the extra low end range or when I will be seriously soloing or comping with chords. That said, I've owned some really nice 5 strings too, particularly my Alembic Epic fretless.
6. Alder body, three piece neck...! Only £5500! Crazy. Mind you, Veasley has been slogging away on Ibanez SR 6 strings since they first came out, so I expect they felt it was time to indulge him. But this is even sillier than when the Gary Willis bass went 'boutique'. I have to say, sadly, that the Veasley bass doesn't even sound that great in the video. The SR3006 was much better, bring that back!
7.
Surely that is Jeff Berlin.
No, he worships at the altar of Butler's chorus use.
8. I always wonder where this 'Mach' business started. It wasn't Wal that started it, and most people use 'mk (mark) I, II or III'.
9. What a shame, he built some fantastic basses. I may still decide to track one down, some day.
10. Very nice! Are you selling any other Alembics at the moment, Loz?
11. How come it has only been played a handful of times despite being a new order?
12.
I must say I've only actually ever heard of Hellborg for the fact that he has his own line of bass amplification that costs a bomb and looks like some kind of posh kitchen appliance.
Must try harder. Especially for his stuff with Shawn Lane.
13. Looking very nice, as usual for an ACG!
14. Not particularly impressed with any of Flea's basses post Modulus, frankly.
15. Having owned headless and headed Status basses in the past I'd go for headless I had a choice but I'd be more than happy with a headed Status bass too.
16. Sadly those soundclips of the Thumb don't seem to be working anymore.
17. What I'd really like to hear is a Streamer with an ACG/East preamp. After all, there was a bloke on here with an ACG preamp in his Thumb and it sounded amazing. Can't find the page now EDIT: got it http://basschat.co.uk/topic/3919-acg-bass-pre-amp/
18. Bartolinis are the ones for the SS1 streamer IMO. SD's aren't really the best in Warwick basses, as far as my tastes go. They colour the sound a lot and emphasise the highs and lows with a pretty plain midrange. Whereas a suitable pickup should be giving depth and vibrance to the mids. My Streamer is all maple with a walnut slice through the middle of it and an ebony board. It should be as sharp as a razor, yet the two Bartolini soapbars in it mellow things out nicely and give it a really rich, musical sound. Crisp, defined highs that aren't shrill and piercing, a tight bottom end sound and a very musical midrange. Quite simply, it sounds bloody fantastic. I'm not sure if it's 'special' because its a limited edition model, but it sounds far better than the usual fare of Streamers with MEC's, EMG's and SD's. Next year I suspect I'll buy a Thumb NT with Barts.
19.
Mahavishnu '84 was my favourite.
Yep, it was fantastic. 'Adventures in Radioland' was pretty good too. Much better than the 'old' Mahavishu.
20. Very smart indeed!
21. Shame it's black, I would have PM'ed you right now to buy it if it wasn't. Someone will enjoy it though, no doubt!
22.
You're right. I'm studying music. I've chosen to not promote myself and audition for gigs as i really want to get my chops together before im (hopefully) out gigging most days of the week. Im only just 21 and my student loan keeps me alive while i practice. I thought after just completing my exams i would have a quick look on basschat and you've ruined my nights practice of transcribing and latin grooves
And I wish you all the best in this, you've made a brave decision and I hope it works out for you.
23.
But if everyone thought like that nothing would ever progress, and we certainly wouldn't have most of the bands that are considered 'all time greats' today would we.
Another point, which I couldn't be arsed to make before but I will now since you've danced around the matter, is that making it big in a band is definitely not connected to studying music. That seems to be more a case of right place, right time and a whole lot of luck. This seems to be another sweet nothing whispered in the ear of those who are considering studying music at a higher level. How many students are these places churning out year after year? To be fair, it almost seems as though the era when musical superstars played instruments is nearly over.
