1. dont bother with him, you will be running around after him FOREVVEEERRRRR Get someone that really wants it, and wants to put in as much effort as you. Auditions... my fave story is my mates band, a keyboard player turned up with a cheap yamaha porta sound, no leads, plugged into the pa. then asked what "note" the song was in he was told Gm he then got his iphone out and looked on the net how to play a Gm
2. he might of thought the bass was for "chuck Rainy" ahh sorry... shocking "we have taken the relevant action to ensure this does not happen again in your postcode area." wow ,1 area at a time ? does this mean the driver has been spanked ?
3.
Here's my recommendation, from Thomann... Superlux Drum Mics ...
thats amazing value, my friend uses a superlux for his vocal and another for his sax, both sound very good. i have been using an audio tech drum kit for live and studio, and have been impressed with it, esp the bass drum mic, which has a more tighter focused sound than the AKG D112 which when compared sounded more boomey due to the extended freq range, but i like the tighter sounding bass drum sound. and you dont need phantom power or batteries for this kit. 4. All of the peavey tnt range is always a top option for a smaller budget. Also keep your eye on ebay, now and again a Roland KC500 pops up to be had at a good price and these are the mutz nutz, the newer ones the kc550 also worth a note but by accounts not as good as the old 500, can also be used as a bass combo and a mixer for a home studio for say guitar, bass, and a drum machine with headphones. loads of info on the net for both,
5. I have the TC Hall of Fame, but the one for me is a boss RV3 which is reverb and d. delay. if you can find one, its so much more than the hof, works fantastic for bass, no loss of volume or tone, the bottom end is still there, it has D,Delay as well, you can use just the reverbs or just the D.Delays or both together. also these are not just presets, well they are but are very controlable you can also use it on vocals in the studio, keys, guitar, or on anything really. Boss dont do this now and was only made for a short time from 94 to 2002, they pref selling you two pedles now ! guitarists love them and very rarely let them go hence not many around, but it has been overlooked by bass players, recorded with fretless bass its pure bliss, and sounds as good as anything i have heard on cd, loads of reviews if you google it Worth a try if you find one you wont be sorry. and hay if you dont like it ... sell it to me, ...but i bet you keep it, http://www.bossus.com/products/rv-3/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVIjrEd4qvk
6. our drummer wanted to go to electronic kit, my view was,( and everyone else in the band) we are in an 11 piece modern blues band, and to have an electronic kit on stage would look right out of place, and also the acoustic volume on stage would be non existent and me as a bass player and indeed the rest of the band needs to bounce of the vibe an acoustic kit gives, which then brings up the question of him also bringing an on stage monitor so he can hear it, but the rest of us ?? so ok the brass have monitors so you can add some kit from the desk to them, then the singer has a monitor so again you can add some kit from the desk to him, our percussionist has one also, already the whole thing is starting to get messy and the time to set up and sound check is already 2 hours+, and he was always last to the gig.......... the added time setting up and sound on stage issues for me my biggest prob was it just looks s£!t on stage, you cant be a kick ass funky blues band with an electronic kit no matter how good it is. if i went to see a rock band and saw a electronic kit on stage i would walk because i want to see a drummer getting off on what he does its all part of the visuals of a good rock band. I have a Roland TD12kv+ in the studio and its great to get tracks down and sounds the mutz nutz, i would be lost with out it, but on stage, no.
7. ahhh its been up then, bugger, sorry. to be fair, i would love a go of it

11. Yea sorry the date on the artical was 1997 !! i quoted the whole page from then mainly to look at some of the things you can do with a reel to reel not to say you could not do it now, but yes everything and alot more is achievable now with a click. so much easyer.
I've been using a Revox A77 for a couple of months now. Pretty much anything on my Soundcloud page from February onwards has some element of analog recording on it. You can tell from the titles when the pieces were recorded. https://soundcloud.c...n-ending-ascend
Some very ambient music nice and clear, the last track "the drop, did you do this as an idea before gabriel did it with the new blood orc live in london ? the begining goes so well with it.
As promised here is one of my older analogue tape recorded tracks: "Love Junkie" by SugarBox For anyone who likes this there is a whole album by SugarBox available on iTunes, or Amazon.
the soundcloud link i just get " sorry we cant find that track" so checked out the amazon link, wow, a blast from the past, it took right back to Soiouxsie and the banshees. while " burn out" reminds me of Cheryl Crow, it has that same Steve Mcqueen vibe to it and on a Tascam 238, i think it has come out great, now that i have soundcloud running i will have a go and try to put on a few tracks,
12. About time you got that garage sorted, it was just gaggin for a studio My friend is a drum teacher, he went through what you are going through now. long story short, when he had finished he had told me to put my ear to the outside of the stud wall and tapped on the inside with a ruler side on, i was very surprised to hear hardly anything thinking i would hear the tap vibrate through the boards. what he had done was put 2 x 4 stud up ( as he wanted to save space in the width of his garage as it was already narrow) when he screwed the stud to the wall he screwed through the wood then a little square rubber pad, so all the rubber pads at the screw points kept the stud away from the walls by only a mil or two. then after insulating and putting the boards on to the stud he did the same thing with the rubber pads, keeping as much area as poss off the stud, same with the floor not sure what he did to the ceiling, then at the front to get into his box he had a double door. seemd to work very well
13. some intresting tricks from.... http://www.soundonso...eelroundup.html .. But to add to this, there is also Reverse Delay, a great trick to bring in the begining of things. same set up as reverse reverb, if you have a vocal on the begining of a track, turn the tape round, take the op from the vocal chan through a digi delay onto an empty track press record to get the first few words to the begining of the track, turn the tape back round and you get that great delay coming in louder and louder until the first word is sung, you can then cut it and press record of the new track just as the vocal comes in, "ANALOGUE TRICKS There are some things you can do with an analogue recorder that you can't with a digital multitrack tape recorder. Here are a few: • BACKWARDS RECORDING Turn the tape over so that it plays backwards. Record onto a spare track, remembering that the track numbers are now reversed. For example, something you recorded on track 3 of a 16-track recorder will now play back on track 14. Turn the tape over again and you have instant Maharishi-period Beatles. • REVERSE REVERB You can't get real reverse reverb from an effects unit. Record the signal you'd like to apply reverse reverb to in the normal way. Turn the tape over so that it plays backwards. Remember that the signal will now appear on a different track. Apply reverb to the signal and record the reverb onto a spare track (remember again that the track numbers have been reversed, or you might erase something!). Turn the tape over and you have real reverse reverb. • WOBBULATION I don't think this technique has an official name so I've made one up! Wow and flutter might usually be considered a bad thing, but in the past recorders have been made to produce wow for effect. For example, if you want to build up a choir of backing vocals by recording multiple takes of the same singer, you'll find that it ends up sounding more like multiple takes of the same singer than a choir! There's logic in that somewhere. A little bit of wow on each track will thicken up the sound very effectively. It works better with some recorders than others, but if you can add a weight to one of the rotating parts to unbalance it, a certain amount of wow will be produced. I'm told that in the old days chewing gum was used for this purpose. I think there might be better modern alternatives! Sticking a piece of gaffa tape to the pinch roller works too, but be careful that it doesn't come unstuck and damage your tape, and remember to clean the pinch roller afterwards. Proceed with caution! • DOUBLE SPEED/HALF SPEED Some multitrack recorders have two speeds. If yours has, you can play back your backing tracks at half speed and record a new track, perhaps a vocal. When the tape is played back at normal speed, the pitch of the vocal will be raised an octave. You can use the varispeed control, which may well have a wider range than a digital recorder would, to achieve a similar effect but with less of a pitch shift."
14. I thought after i had opend a post called does anyone still use tape, it was more of a queasion really. So have opend this post for anything analogue, seems a fair few of us still use Analogue and a trend is emerging to have a hybrid studio of analog and digi, Just noted on the other thred that the price of multitrack tape recorders are no doubt on the rise, as said ... "About a year to two years ago you could still get a tascam msr 24 for about 600 700, It does seem tape is making a come back......., just spotted this on ebay......, http://www.ebay.co.u...0c#ht_274wt_975 " That Tascam MSR24 has now finished at a price of £1.480.00 clearly showing the rise of people wanting that format again, and i dont think it will stop there. As more and more people want that format it will no doubt drive prices up, "here is an intresting read on the come back of tape, http://www.soundonso...eelroundup.html " One way Im using my tascam is to take to a practice, i found that if i put a mono jack into the send and return of each chan to the first click ( not all the way in ) this will then send the sig to the recorder and does not mute the chan so the desk still works as normal, ( as the desk does not have enough dedicated Chans out) then all the sends to the inputs of the tascam and this works a treat, i get good results from this, i then use abit of cheating, i take the tape home and transfer each track into my digi recorder to edit, ( so not 100% analog, but so much easyer to edit ) So, a topic on all things Analog, lets hear them tracks, im sure loads us have old tracks on portastudios, worth a mention, tho probably by now nothing to play them on !! i have just tried to put one on soundcloud but the page on my old XP pc wont open, so will try another method.
15.
If you just need barcodes for your existing physical CDs then there are plenty of places on line that will sell you a one-off barcode number for under £10 per code. Make sure that you get the right code for where you want to sell. If you are only selling in the UK and Europe an EAN13 code will be what you need. However if you plan to sell in the USA you will need a UPC12 code as many places won't recognise the 13 digit EAN code. Luckily you can make the UPC12 code into an EAN13 one simply by adding a "0" at the front of the code. The really expensive and time consuming bit will be getting the barcode onto stickers and then applying then to every CD. IME you need to get them professionally printed as poor quality barcodes that don't scan are one of the quickest ways of getting your product excluded from stores. If you are planning to make the albums available for download through iTunes etc. then do this first and get your barcode through the aggregator that you use. This will save you paying twice for the code, because most aggregators will insist on selling you a barcode for downloads whether you already have one for the physical version or not. Hope that helps.
yea, thats good info for me too, cheers.
16.
That drop down panel is there because you are supposed to check, and if necessary adjust all those settings in conjunction with a calibration tape every time you use the machine. The equivalent section in an Otari 2" 24-track machine is housed in a huge cabinet about the size of a washing machine. The Terrortone Theremin is a Moog Etherwave from the days when the Moog theremins weren't allowed to sport the Moog logo in the UK - so a relatively recent one. Unfortunately on stage with Mr Venom it has had a hard life and is currently held together with glue, extra screws and a good helping of gaffer tape. The power supply input socket has recently failed, so I'm currently looking at more robust alternatives...
Yea, i had joint owned an old studer 8 track that may as well have been a washing machine, always seem to need something doin to it. just age i think, so caps were a main concern. i rarely touch the settings on the tascam's they are pritty stable,
17. they do seem to have lasted tho, time is testament to that, as you know Ranscombe use theirs all the time, i have used my msr16 alot more than my 24, but they just keep going, They are infact very well designed and made and almost modular, for ex there is a drop down flap on the front via two allen screws and all of the cards are right there at the front with all the pots for setting almost every parameter you would need, all accessable in 10 seconds ..just took these photos to give you an idea,... @ bigRedx..... that Theremin you used, was it an original one, and have you stil got it ? i shudder to think (Theremin in the background) what that would be worth now
18. About a year to two years ago you could still get a tascam msr 24 for about 600 700, It does seem tape is making a come back, as more and more people want a hybrid studio, just spotted this on ebay and yep their on the way up, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tascam-MSR-24-track-24-channel-reel-to-reel-analogue-recorder-/141611889932?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20f8b9f50c#ht_274wt_975
19. Comon bill you can do it, its just software forgot to ask, the midifiles you are using, have you downloaded any of them from the net ? if so and are using them as part of your song then allsorts of probs can happen. i some times use midi drum pattons downloaded , and when i midi them out to my drum machine they keep resetting my drum machine everytime i pressed stop, this was down to the program changes in the midi file, which can be found by using the inspector of each midi file, to find the inspector click "help" then look in the A to Z for the inspector, it will give you more info it may help, sorry if all this sounds like gobbleflabblebobbingdom flubble fluff flancake
20. bilbo if you copy and paste the whole project 4 bars forward (to account a lead in of 4 bars) then save it as another name say (********* take 2) shut it down then open it again by right clicking on the track (open with.... cubase) does it still do it ? Or as a long winded trial can you save the files as seperate files, and the wavs as stem files, then open new project, then import your midi files one by one, trying each one as you do so to find the culprit, ( a poss program change ? check the inspector of each midi file) i had something the similar and found a program change hidden in the hihats of all things,
21.
But what you are referring to here is 'sampling' which infringes upon the mechanical (now digital of course) sound recording done by someone else without paying for that use.
yea sorry should of made it more clear and quoted.... "It's melody and lyrics that hold copyright. No copyright on chord sequence or bassline or anything else." my point is that if wanted nothing is safe if someone wanted to take it, and they could infact copyright your Guitar or bass parts or in this case drums, off topic abit but a valid point.
22. it seems drum beats as well, i remember all the hass over the drum break in the Winstons song "Amen Brother" when it was sampled then became an iconic break " The Aman Break" used by just about everyone, then zero G, stating it was theirs and you have to pay to use it, a very intresting insight into the corp big wigs stealing your stuff and you not having enough money to fight it, found it... watch this, its worth it and really opens your eyes.... 23.
Play something we know. Hilarious.:/
this reminded me of a night someone shouted that at alexanders in chester watching a jaw dropping brill band. now for some reason i have it in my head as the hellcasters ! could be wrong. anyway someone shouted "Play something we know" and then some witty git shouted "or even just a chord we know"
