May be worth taking the required cables from your mixer to theirs with you in preparation, just in case nobody has the additional cables in their kitbag.

What digital mixer have you got? You can just set up each channel you want to pass through on prefader aux - assuming you have enough auxes available. Y cables are OK - but dont go there if there is any phantom power in play. Remember some analogue desks dont have phantom power per channel... it's either on or off for the whole mixer.

Also remember the amount of bass is also dependant upon the genre of music and the preference of those listening to it... It's not as easy as saying lots of bass = bad. -

I was speaking from a band full of FT musicians making money through the band/teaching When you are coming from a hobbiyist point of view, cancelling gigs, having people turn up having not learned the set doesn't matter as much* *but appreciate you don't have to be FT have a pride in what you are doing.

Cancelling wedding gigs and corporates dont work like that. If you do that, don't expect to work again - especially if the work comes through an agent. You have to plan for things like covid, illness, people being found under busses... and not being able to manage their own diaries.

re:4 dont make them too comfortable though... cos then they take the pss with you. If I had my time again, I would be nah, 1 strike you're out. Plenty of other people willing to get regular good money (pro fees) in their pockets.

I've run bands for 20 odd years, I recently quit. All enjoyment in playing has gone. I resent a lot of musicians - in reality, most could not hack a 9 to 5, answer to a boss or generally be accountable for their actions. The more I did and more successful the band became, the more people demanded of me but their input became less and less - it got to the point where I was literally second guessing every bit of laziness which had crept in. I couldn't even rely on them to correctly plug in XLRs or even setup their own gear within an hour. I remember bllcking the drummer because it took him 3 hours to set up his kit and plug in the mics (incorrectly) - but yet it was me being unreasonable and imagining things. Numerous phonecalls informing of mismanaged diaries - or no appreciation where gigs were. They'd take the gigs then not realise the gig was 3 hours away with a sound check at 5... and they didn't finish teaching until 5... Just general lack of adulting stuff like that. Great musicians are in demand - and as such will be swayed to other gigs and expect any problems which they cause to be solved by other people. They get away with it because people want good players... Oh... and the days of finding your own dep vanished, it became my issue every time. If you want to solve your headaches - the best band mates are not the best musicians. The best musicians in the world are useless if you can't depend upon them being there. Looking back, I'm still amazed I managed to keep things running and never missed a gig or let anybody down... but I am not prepared to go out as a 7 piece where the first time folk have met is in the car park. That's just a ticking time bomb til disaster with a contract with name on. And you know what, I'm now looking at life appreciating all the time I have got back where I'm not sitting in a van dreading what the next band related phone call is going to be about. Don't get me wrong, when we played, we were crash hot... just the overhead and my stress (not their stress) just wasn't worth it... and what with agencies and a race to the bottom on price, the corporate band/wedding band game is doomed anyway.

The Masterfader software is dead simple to use and gives you the right amount of control over what you would need for most gigs. As a piece of software, I think its dead in the water. The development of it kinda died when Ben Olswang left Mackie. Masterfader 4 to 5 was a complete rewrite and 5 took a while to get stable. I can't see it getting any updates any time soon. I ran a pair of DL32Rs for many years and they never missed a beat.

Before anybody does something like that, understand the size and weight of them and whether you can transport/lift them. Having run 8004s (similar spec size/weight) for years, its a life of two person lifts, vans and wheelchair ramps. Oh and Blue wheels are a must. (Should go without saying)

I reckon I have a workable MacGyver solution for under 200 quid. Downside? Mono. I'll keep hunting. The downside of that integrated phone mic - probably not capable of coping with high spl... which shouldn't be a problem as we are all on silent stage... right?

Agreed. There's quite a specialist requirement here - a mic preamp, amplifier, and a means to mix the output from a headphone amp to a new output... Very niche!

Oh and @Phil Starr - it's nice to hear somebody appreciates my advice. Its all based on real world experience and my own journeys - and I genuinely want to get people to a better place as quickly (and as cheap) as possible so they can enjoy what I have enjoyed.

I 100% get it. It is a leap of faith. And it's loads of money for something which effectively looks like something you get free with your phone. I was exactly in the same position. Everybody tip toes in - and even worse - historically, there was no affordable multi-driver universal IEM to do that with. You will save the money if you go full in day 1... but there's that confidence thing... and yes, it's a lot of cash as soon as you commit to the custom IEM route. Remember this when you get to the inevitable though "If you ask any musician sporting custom IEMs whether they would ever give them up, listen to the answer. It will be consistent." Custom tips is a good half way house... but I can already tell you the bit you will be annoyed with. The fit will will be great - but when you take the IEMs out of your ear, the fit on the custom tip will be so good, it will stay in your ear when the IEM comes out. And the other element of course, is that they won't lie as flat as they could... so get ready to potentially channel your inner Shrek. But genuinely - I am looking forward to hearing about your updates!
