From Alembic wiki - In 1976, Alembic made the world's first graphite neck basses with necks supplied by Geoff Gould, who subsequently founded Modulus. Well.. somebody is wrong! (my previous comment about Geoff Gould presenting the first graphite necked bass in 1977 was this Alembic - maybe it was finished in 76 and made aware to the public in 77?)

According to the Steinberger history on their site - 1977 [size="2"][color="#999999"]Several prototypes made of graphite reinforced epoxy are manufactured.[/color][/size] [size="2"]Any advances on 1977?[/size]

[/quote] Close call - Cutlass birthdate is 1982 (with Modulus manufactured neck) with Status being 81 - the Status folks may be clearer around the dates. Is 1981 the birth of GMT or was Rob going before this? Geoff Gould (founder of modulus) apparently presented first graphite necked bass in 1977... so it looks like MM and Status were lagging by a few years.

I heard this at Frankfurt - it did sound awesome. Had the typical EBS tone although not having tried it out in the field, I can't say how it copes in gigging situations yet. Defo watching this one...

It's not exactly rocket science. I've got 4 2x10 cabs. I take as many as I need to do the gig... but they haven't been hacked from 4x10 cabs so don't look all shoddy like the Trace in the OP.

I'm surpised that Sterling himself hasn't been in contact with you to ensure that you are sorted out...!?

Take into account whether your bass is through body strung or not and allow the extra length to go through the body... I've been caught out on that one...

I don't really care. I generally string my B through the body and the rest on the bridge. Why? Because I always have done and I like it... it probably makes no difference but it's now the norm and I wouldn't change it. Daft isn't it?

[/quote] You may want to head a bit further up to 48th Street... I'm not generalising. Just being blunt - it's OK to own a lot of the same brand. I've got examples of the same bass but in different finishes - depending upon the gig.

Buy a Dingwall because that's what you're ultimately going to end up with, after all, you don't want to end up with is unusable in comparison.

So how come Ashdown cabs, which don't have anything obstructing the drivers and ports sound like they have been wrapped up in a duvet? I'm with Mr Perry on this one. If there is enough of a gap for the ports to breathe (which I would imagine to be the case here), I can't believe it will be a problem. Why has nobody questioned other manufacturers who blatently have covered ports and drivers? And let's face it, if you are on a gig, I would be amazed if you could tell the difference. And if you can tell the difference, you are obviously sitting in your bedroom with a totally ridiculous rig that does nothing but pee off your neighbours - and you've convinced yourself that you can hear a difference when in reality, you can't.

I think the lesson is that if you are going to buy something which is essentially an off the peg bass, you'll save yourself loads of hassle by spending a bit of money on fuel and driving around all the stockists until you find the one that works for you. If you are going to get a custom bass built, go to a luthier with whom you can deal directly and has a doorstep that you can turn up on with relative ease... Anyway Gareth, now that BP is on board, I am sure your nightmare will stop and your basses will arive to your satisfaction having been inspecting by BP himself. You may as well ask him to sign it - some MM collector freak will dig that in the future.
