The Reidmar is a bit wider than a lot of other portable D-class amps, such as Genz, Markbass, Aguilar, EA...etc. Also, you can't rackmount the Reidmar, which is a little disapointing. Hopefully, EBS will improve the ergonomics with their next D-class model. Especially that the new Aguilar Tonehammer 350 is not far off the same size as a packet of fags! Glad that you are joining the Reidmar party today! Don't forget to give us your feedback! Are getting your Classicline cab today too or is that coming later?
Agreed - the lack of rackmount is a bit of an oversight... although I don't believe for one minute that the Reidmar was designed with anybody in mind who is out to rack this thing. If I recall, Bo wanted a sub £1000 giggable lightweight solution. It's no surprise that the solution is entirely from China but despite that, the package is nicely made. I'm not entirely sure that EBS thinks that there is a market for these amps in the UK as their other non class D amps are selling well in Europe but no so good over here... Time will tell. I suspect if the Reidmar takes off, they'll broaden the range. Marketing in the UK is tricky. I suspected that there would be a double power T90 given the extra holes in the chassis - that hasn't materialised... yet. But then again, I don't know what the uptake of the amp has been - the HD350, TD660 and Fafner remain the firm favourites with the Classic 450 being popular in Europe - yet the Classic 450 seems to have done very little over here.
As promised. Pay close attention to the Volume knobs! Uploaded with ImageShack.us Somebody will have to explain to me how that is possible!? I had to push my old Markbass LMIII harder to get to the same volume as the HD350 and that amp is twice the power as the Reidmar. I don't get it??
The Reidmar will be putting out it's full load into that single cab, the HD350 won't (it ideally wants a 2 ohm load). I know that EBS claim (and probably quite rightly) that the HD350 still puts out 300w into 4ohms, in practice, I've found it to have far more headroom running at 2. What you must remember, that there is really only 50w difference between the continuous output between the HD350 and the Reidmar, so the difference in output in terms in dB will be negligible (remember volume is measured in dB not watts!) Makes we wonder if the old log pot trick has been used like on the Fender Hotrods - e.g. big volume boosts up to 12 o'clock and then past that nothing happens! It's a good selling trick in the shops! To be honest, I didn't think to try that out and I didn't have a HD350 to try it against! PS your settings are not the same - the frequency centre points for the tone controls are different on both amps.
Now that I have spent a lot of time with the Reidmar I have noticed a few things which I initially didn't pick up on. DI The output signal is a little hotter than it is on the HD350. I noticed it last week when I was doing some direct recording at home. Maybe this has been upgraded? Doesn't bother me much as I use my EA amp for all of my direct recording.
This could be due to excited mids - see below...!
Mid range The mid's on the Reidmar sound a bit more projected than other EBS amps, including the Fafner. There is definately a bit of difference there.
Maybe to make the most out of those watch, there is a boost in the mids to fool the ear into thinking that the amp is cutting more and louder than it really is? Without comparing the two on a scope, I wouldn't like to do more than muse...
Low end As you said EBS_Freak, I did notice that I have to crank the 'Low' knob up one more notch than I normally would on the HD350.
Yup, it wouldn't surprise me if they have been more agressive when it comes to shelving those lower frequencies. Of course, boosting them will put them back but there is likely to be a tradeoff when pushing the amp hard - maybe you sacrifice a bit of headroom by boosting the lows?
Shhhhhh This amp is very quiet! The DI out is quiet, the cabs don't hiss as much as the HD350 for some reason...even the fan is quiet!
Can't really comment on the noise levels but as for the fans, there's not as much in the amp that needs cooling. If you check out the heat sinks and the fans in the HD350 and TD650 and the fact that these amps can run down to 2ohm, it's hardly surprising that more cooling is needed.
Thanks EBS freak. I am ordering my Reidmar today and then ordering the speakers after. I would love to have the 4 ohms Classic 212 cab to run with it but at 66lbs it just defeats the object of lightweight. So I will have to settle on 2 x 112 Classic cabs. I love the tone of my EBS Classic 60 combo. Deep, warm and full so I am hoping the Reidmar and Classic 112 cab will be much the same. I only play in an acoustic band so not desperate for lots of power but I am doing some big concert hall gigs later in the year and need something with a bit of balls behind me. I think the Reidmar will be perfect.
Yes - I should think for your needs it will fit the bill perfectly. I'd certainly like a setup like that in my arsenal!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. They haven't screwed about with the compressor. Still the best single knob compressor on an amp ever!

I spent a good hour or so with this rig at the weekend giving it a bit of a going over. Sadly, I didn't have one of my Proline cabs with me so I was testing an unfamiliar amp with unfamiliar cabs (2 1x12s). The last time I heard this amp was the prototype that Mike and Mats showed me at Frankfurt - and that was through an 8x10 neoline! In fact, this chassis started life as the Classic 160 but that never materialised (although I did like the spot varnished logo on the top better than the plastic logo which is on the Reidmar.) and after a good few years, the Reidmar finally showed up. First observation - louder than I thought it would be and with a jazz bass going into the amp with minimal gain and master volume, the setup seemed to have good presence and buckets of the EBS signature sound on tap. A very good all rounder, finger style and again very slap happy (I know EBS seems to get tarred with this brush but it does pretty much cover every musical style - although I did notice the lack of the drive control typically found on EBS amps - good excuse to buy a valve drive I guess!) With both the character switch out and engaged, both settings gave me that very familiar sound, a sound I'm used to with my HD350 and TD650 amps. I suspect that this amp does a very good impression of an HD350 - shame I didn't have it to hand to A/B. What was immediately noticable to me is the power in the bottom end. It was delivered with balls - something that I feel is lacking in a lot of class D amps. There was no sagging or delay of the note - even with a thumped B string, the amp was still delivering and similarly, there is bucket loads of attack on the top end. If anything, I felt that the speakers were having to work harder than the amp to get those low frequencies out. I suspect EBS have shelved the uber low frequencies (ie the stuff we don't hear) to maximise those 250 watts. It certainly seems to have worked. I would quite happily take this set up out to the smaller gigs that I do. Other plus points... headphone socket! Good quality sockets - none of that plastic tat. I know some people will bitch about the single speaker output - especially if their existing cabs haven't got two speakons on them to daisy chain... but overall, I don't think that you can complain for the money. As for the speakers, well, they haven't got the versatility of the proline and neolines due to the on/off tweeter switch as opposed to the variable control - but they are very pleasing to the ears both with the tweeter off and engaged. I would say they have a more rounder sound to what I am used to with a less excitable top end - but a lot of guys seem to prefer that. (I've never got why people go on about the amount of treble that EBS cabs can produce - you simply turn the tweeter level down? Am I presuming that such an adjustment is beyond the realms of most bassplayers!?). Again, when I last spoke to the guys at EBS, they said that they were confident that they had found cheaper equivalents to the more expensive Eminence and Selenium tweeters that they use in their neo/proline series... and I have to say, I believe them. They do sound great. Weightwise, the head is lovely, sizewise, I'm still a little dissapointed... it would have been nice to see something competing in the Shuttle (esp the 3) and Markbass arena... but I suppose it isn't the end of the world. It just would have been good to be gig bag size friendly. The cabs are nice - still prefer the visuals of their other cabs, but they are made well and have that classic look that lots of people are digging on. They sounds great - especially for the money. They didn't have extreme bumps in their response - nothing that stood out of the ordinary anyway. My main fear was that due to the size of them, they would sound a little boxy. They sound good. Not huge - but certainly a lot bigger than I was expecting. Certainly compared to the Neo 112, I would say it's a good speaker. I have never been convinced the the neoline 1x10 or 1x12 - they seem to struggle with everything I threw at them. So... It makes for a good compact rig. Do I want one? Of course I do. Do I have a need for one? Not really as I think it's too close to my HD350 to warrant getting one... but for that reason alone, for anybody who hasn't got a HD350 and wants that sort of sound at a snip of the price, it's a no brainer. Will be interesting to see how long the HD350 stays around for given the fact that the Reidmar is snapping at it's heels... and lets not forget the HD350 has been around for over 10 years now. I still think that the 250watt rating is a bit of a marketing nightmare as for the people that buy on specs, 250w is too low given some of the figures that the competition are putting out... (It obviously bothered TC enough for them to be creative with their figures). I would have liked to see a 500w figure... but as I say, it's a loud wee beastie! Just a note though - if anybody is coming from EBS cabs and run a multi cab setup, the majority of EBS cabs are 4 ohm and the "bigger" heads goes down to 2ohms. This does not hold with the Reidmar... so if you are looking at just changing your existing EBS head, it's a bit of a bummer. Conversely, I'm not in a bad position as my cabs are all custom orders at 8ohm - however, running two of them with the Reidmar I think would be OK.. but just the 1 where the head isn't going to deliver it's full 250 watt... well, I'm not too sure... Certainly something to think about...! Maybe I should just get 2!

Good choice. One of my fave Fenders.
I've known John Henshall, the cameraman concerned, for many many years. While he was at the BBC he started developing optical effects - special lenses - of which the Fish Eye used in this clip was one of his first. He eventually left the BBC and started his own company. He obtained a copy of the tape as the effect was his creation and no doubt he did not charge the BBC of the use of the lense so a copy of that sequence was fair recompense. Videotape for 2-inch bradcast VTRs was very expensive and someone in BBC management decided that they could save money by wiping and re-using tapes. Thousands of hours of unique television got destroyed in this process. It will be interesting to see what else he has hidden away. One of our local jammers spends some of his spare time researching and tracking down lost footage from that era. This is one of his finds, so thanks Ray.
Indeed - that's what I'd heard. Wanted it for a show reel for his lenses or something like that?
I have always liked the sound from EBS amps but the weight of them put me off, this could now be a contender for me! Wonder what it would sound like with my 'Berg cabs? I can't see the amp on the Bass Direct website so wonder if Mark is stocking them?
The weight? You wimp! As for the Bergs, yes, they work nice together nicely. They are smoother than the EBS cabs with a less excitable top end but the EBS cabs with the tweeters up aren't to everybody's taste anyway. Birdy runs his EBS with Bergs and his rig has always sounded spot on.

The Shadows backed up by a Sue Ryder Bass...
EBS_freak replied to Schnozzalee's topic in Bass Guitars
Nah, I reckon it's a cheap Fender knock off and he's hacked the headstock and put a Ryder logo on it. Label tart. -
To me, somebody with an endorsement that is worth anything at all is when the company is bending over backwards, advertising the fact that YOU use THEIR equipment... not the other way round. Anything else is just e-peen.
I could only think of the Warwick Infiniti offhand, but there's a few on here: http://basschat.co.u...20string%20semi
Yup.
As a little sub-thread to this thread, I bought a Steve Smith semi-acoustic a couple of years back, and the neck / headstock is unquestionably esrly Goodfellow - probably from that pile in the shed! He was a very talented luthier who'd worked with Heart / Heartwood guitars before working for Bernie. No longer with us sadly. Very fond of the semi as it's based on one of my favourite basses - the Gibson EB-2, but long scale, decent p/ups (Barts) and Jazz-proportioned neck. Build quality and finish are fabulous. Some real UK luthier talent around in the '80's
Now that's cool. I likey. Always wanted a hollowbody but choice is lacking on 5 strings...
