1. I tried one unplugged at Music Live. Obviously, I can't comment on the amplified tone, but it felt surprisingly good to play, and seemed to be well made. And they look very cool!
 2.
Don't sand it but use a fine wet and dry paper (1500) with plenty of water and that will take the gloss off it without removing all the varnish. Works perfectly. It won't damage it unless you take it all off and allow water into the grain of the wood.
+1. I've done this on both my Jazz and Precision. It removes the gloss (and the stickiness you describe) without ruining the finish. I much prefer the feel. And I guess it would be easy enough to polish the finish back up to a gloss if you wanted to in the future.
 3.
edit/ if it was in good nick, i'd pay £120 for a Jap squier bass regardless of age i think
+1. The Jap Squiers tend to be pretty good, especially the Silver Series. If it plays well, you can stick a Badass and some Basslines on there and have a very nice bass for not much money.
 4.
You played badly because you're playing a Warwick whilst wearing a Fender tshirt! Classic mistake Si
Lol! Believe it or not, I actually changed out of a Fender T shirt before a gig on Thursday, as I was playing my Corvette $$. Clearly a wise decision!
 5.
exactly the p-up combination i've always thought was the most sensible.
+1. It looks a lot like the Sandberg California Precisions, which is no bad thing!
 6. They're all outstanding - especially the white P and the Lakland! Are they Quarterpounders in the black and white Precisions?
 7.
Cheers guys, she's currently at my LGS getting a new wizard thumper pickup fitted along with a villex booster i bought, i pick her up tomorow so i'll post update pics then
Very nice. You can't beat a Sunburst P with black guard.
 8.
yeah, just googled it. i see what it is, but i cant imagine it being anymore comfortable. EDIT: by the way, SJA, is there an attitude four string with a PJ config? dont they normally just have a P?
I think the Attitude generally has a P in the normal P-bass centre position with a Gibson style humbucker in the neck position - although the neck PUP is hidden under a pearl cover matching the pickguard.
 9. Very nice - that's just how an old Precision should look!
 10. Another vote for the Ibanez Soundgear. Way too thin for me - they always feel like a toy! My son has an SR500 which sounds fantastic, but I really can't get on with the neck. It seems much shallower than my Jazz
 11. I had an RD905 for a while. Really nice bass and you don't see too many of them around. Like most Ibanez basses, it was a really good spec for the money, well made, with Basslines pickups as standard. The neck was a bit wider than the typical skinny Soundgear necks, which suited me. Of all the basses I've owned, its probably the only one I regret selling! The Soundgear SR500 is also a cracking bass for the money. Bartolini's as standard and a really awesome neck. The only thing I don't like about them is the very thin neck. A lot of people like them, but they feel way too thin for me.
 12.
The tuning thing only bugged me as it's something I don't do, and don't like to hear. It's not a major problem but did detract a tiny bit for me. I sort of take on board what you say about the singer stepping on a pedal as he does bound around a lot. I did wonder if it really was a tuning thing or just something he does in the spaces between the songs as he wasn't tuning, just sort of checking.
I have to say it would have really bugged me. I hate to see that, even with a pub band. Mind you, our guitarist not only tunes noisily between songs - he starts practising riffs from whatever's next in the set list!
 13. I got completely unexpected Gas for an Italia Bass. I didn't play one through an amp, so I have no idea what they sound like, but how cool do they look?!
 14.
The mark hoppus bass does have only one volume knob and it is an awesome looking bass.
I read somewhere that Hoppus didn't even want the volume control - he simply wanted an on/off switch! Given that most users will have the volume permanently on full, that actually makes a lot of sense!
 15.
I was wondering about putting a larger PUP, for example a Tele Bass-style humbucker, at the neck? I think it would look pretty crap aeshetically, but might provide far more tonal range, especially for those earth-shaking dub vibes?
Isn't that pretty much the Pickup arrangment on the Yamaha Billy Sheehan model (can't remember the proper model name)? I think it would be ideal for bluesy, thuddy trad rock - a Thunderbird type PUP would be ideal and would suit the whole P bass vibe well.
 16.
This Stingray's good in the water, how's yours?? (just a bit of fun!)
Mine's got a nicer paint job......
 17.
Me!!
Or me! I bought a Stingray from him a few weeks back. Very quick delivery, and the bass was exactly as described. If you're after a good 'ray at a reasonable price I'd have no hesitation in buying from him.
 18. +1 on the Jap Precisions. I've got a Jap 70s reissue P and I love it. Amazing bass for the money, and in terms of quality is just as good as my US Jazz.
 19. +1 for all the Ibanez suggestions, but do try the string spacing. The SR505 is great, but the string spacing is very tight. If you can find one, have a look at either the Ibanez RD605 or 905. Second hand you could probably find either a MM Sub or Warwick Corvette - both well worth looking at.
 20.
I am toying with the idea of seelling my Yamaha RBX170 as I'm fed up with it. Any suggestions for good entry level basses to replace it with?
Depends on your budget, but have a look at the Ibanez stuff. The SR500 is amazingly good value.
 21.
If you were putting a CD together to show off bass playing......what would you include?
Given your Avatar, London Calling would be a good start! Personally I would have to include Soul to Squeeze by the Chilis. Fantastic, melodic playing. And no bass compilation would be complete without some James Jamerson on there.
 22.
Bought a Stingray the weekend before and a Roland Cube30 last weekend, hopefully getting a bigger combo this weekend (spend, spend, spend).
I bought a Stingray as well - and its absolutely awesome!
 23.
Lolz, Raise funds first sir, then buy!
That's what my wife keeps telling me........
 24. I'm not sure I really want to part with this, but I need to raise funds for a Stingray which I've just bought. Its a Corvette $$ in Nirvana black with Warwick Rockbag. I bought it from Sound Control about a year ago. I've gigged with it a few times. There are a couple of very small marks above the pickups where I've rested my thumb, but you have to look very hard to see them. Fantastic Bass. Any offers? 25.
This thread is making me very frustrated that mine isn't working . No doubt I'll shop for a replacement and have to spend an extra tenner. Has anyone tried a Hartke VXL Bass Attack?
Yes - I've got the Hartke VXL Bass Attack. It has some decent sounds - more crunch than distortion. And its feels very solid. The only problem is that it doesn't have bypass - you can turn off the drive and shape functions, but the EQ will still be effected. That makes it a bit less flexible live than it would otherwise be.
