1. I'm planning to upgrade to some Mark Bass kit, so am selling my Ashdown MAG C300-115 Combo and a MAG 2x10 cab. COMBO NOW SOLD. CAB STILL AVAILABLE. The Combo is the 307 watt 1x15 model. Its in very good condition, save that the knob on the input level control is damaged. This is cosmetic only, and the control itself works fine. It also has some screw holes on the bottom where some castors were fitted at one point. The cab is the standard MAG 2x10. I bought this used a year or so ago, but have only used it on a couple of ocassions at larger venues as an extension for the Combo. Full specs on the Ashdown site here: <a href="http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/section.asp?section=mag" target="_blank">http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/section.asp?section=mag</a> I'm looking for £160 for Combo and £110 for the cab, or £250 for the pair. I would rather not post due to their size and weight, but I'm happy to meet half way within a reasonable disctance of Nottingham.
 2. I have GAS for one of these as well, so a really useful thread. I tried the Jeff Berlin at a local shop at the weekend and was hugely impressed. The VLE filter was fantastic, and with a passive Jazz it was easy to dial up pretty much any sound - including the sound you describe in the first post. And I couldn't believe how light it was. My only reservation is whether it really is loud enough for small to medium gigs, as I couldn't really crank it up in the shop. From the posts here, it seems there's no worries on that count, so it looks like I'll be dusting off the credit card!
 3.
Welcome to the forum! I've got to disagree with those who suggest not bothering to try out a cheaper bass first. It's usually the lower end stuff that has the biggest issues with quality control. Although I've not heard that this is particularly a problem with VM Squiers, why not go for the best one available? If you got a friend to guide you, not having played much yourself shouldn't be any obstacle. Wunjo's is the only shop in Denmark St worth bothering with in my experience, although their bass stock is small. Sound Control beneath Virgin Megastore could be worth a visit at a quiet time of day, if only for the amount of stock they carry.
+1. In your budget, you can actually try out some very decent basses by the likes of Yamaha, Ibanez, Squier, Epiphone, Vintage etc. Which you like will depend very much on what sounds and feels right to you. Definately try first. And buy what feels right to you, not what has the best logo on the headstock.
 4. I've got CIJ 70s P in white. It's the nicest Precision I've played by a country mile! Have a bump on me for a very nice bass!
 5.
These pictures look really crap - I'll try and have some more taken this weekend.
They look stunning to me! Sadly I can't justify another jazz, but have a bump on me
 6.
I have recently bought a Vintage sunburst Stingray and want to get a clear scratch plate to replace the black one. I have seen some at WD music on line but feel that £32 is a tad steap for a piece of plastic. I could get some plastic and try a DIY job but wife suggested I try and buy one first. I'm sure I saw some on Ebay (USA) for around £20 recently but can't find them now. Does anyone else know where I could get one from. Any help would be much apreciated. Cheers Markyt
I've bought a couple of pickguards from here. Pretty quick delivery from the US, and good quality products. 7.
The Hohner B2 and Jack are both passive headless basses.
The Hohner B2 comes in various models I think, some passive, some active. I've got a very old and beaten up one, which is actually really nice to play. Its switchable from active to passive. You can ususally find one or two on e-bay.
 8.
Now For Sale or trade as buyer pulls out!
PM sent
 9.
I just can't imagine what the guys at Fender were thinking when they came up with that finish...
+1. The colour is bad enough, but the matching 'burst pickguard is truly aweful!
 10. This looks interesting: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A:IT&ih=014 Looks like the original finish neck and body, but pretty much everything else is replaced (why would you put a white diMarzio on there?!).
 11. Scar Tissue - Chilis. I love the song, we play it ok, but it never seem to go down well.
 12.
You dont have to download anything.... There is a "convert to MP3" option in the drop down menues of iTunes.....!
So there is! Just found it!
 13.
Can you drag songs from your i-tunes library onto one of these? (apologies for a probable dumb question from a technophobe
You have to convert to MP3 format. I've not had any problems, but I'm told you can downlaod free (or at least very cheap) software to do this.
 14. We play mainly Indie stuff from the 90s. We recently added Cum on Feel the Noise, really as a tounge in cheek change from the rest of the set. It always goes down an absolute storm!
 15.
I could have bought one for £119 from the tascam stand at music live at the weekend - not sure if that included vat though.
That's what I did - £119 including VAT at the Tascam stand. For what its worth, the sale was actually through Sound Control, so it may be possible to haggle them down to that price. Excellent bit of kit. Its actually much more intuitive to use than the CD version which I used to have.
 16.
Good work! And that's a very nice looking bass!
PS I would have a go at fitting a Badass for your next project - a real improvement on the Fender Bridge, and IMHO would look great on that bass
 17. Good work! And that's a very nice looking bass!
 18.
Well if you do buy one, find your best internet price then call http://www.guitar-mania.com/ they will match it, if they have one in stock. I did that for my LMK. Very good price and no worries about it coming from Europe .. guitar-mania is a real shop as well as online and on ebay.
thanks for the heads up OG
 19.
Hi Paul, I understand your trepidation. I'm one of those non-practical blokes who can't fit a plug without a diagram and takes an hour to change a washer. I was too worried to start messing about with my own bass so I bought a cheap HB (actually mine was a kit and putting it together was an education in itself) and a copy of The Bass Handbook and just set about it safe in the knowledge that if it all went pear-shaped then there is no great loss. elom
Buying one of those cheap kits is excellent advice. I did the same some years ago, and it really does make you realise that there's no great mystery to adjusting a bass to the way you want it.
 20. Great review. I'm really tempted to get one of these but have worried about volume levels given the small size. I'm currently using a 300w Ashdown combo which is loud enough for most of the small to medium pubs and clubs we play, but weighs a ton. From what you guys are saying, the Markbass will be more than loud enough, but half the weight of the Ashdown (and arguably a better sound too). Looks like the credit card is about to take a hit again......
 21.
you want to talk to simon1964 for info on the EMGs. i prefer a passive precision sound so i haven't played his precision much lately, but he plays it a lot.
As I've been named in this post I'd better respond! I've got a Jap 70s P reissue with EMGs and I love the sound. To me it sounds like a P should but with a tighter bottom end and a bit more punch. I've tried quarterpounders, but to be honest didn't like them. To me they sound light on mids. All personal taste of course.
 22. Have a look at this from Fender's website. Its a pretty good guide to the basics of stting up a bass: http://www.fender.co.uk/support/basses.php
Thanks for the Heads Up. 4 Dec it is for me.
I've got tickets to the Rock City gig on 4th December. Really looking forward to it. Its a shame there's no Weller, of course, but I can't wait to see Foxton banging out those classic bass lines - that's what made me first pick up a bass 25 (+) years ago!
 24. I've got a US Jazz and a Corvette $$. They're completely different animals. As people have said, you really need to play both. The Jazz does have a bulky body, but surprisingly, my Corvette is no lighter than the Jazz. The necks really could not be more different. The Corvette is a typical chunky Warwick neck. Personally I think its great, but if you are used to a narrow Jazz neck it will feel very different. Its not just the size of the neck - the wenge on the Warwick has a very ''woody'' feel. A real contrast to the glossy maple necks on a Jazz. Again, impossible to say one is better than the other, but you do need to play them to find out which is best for you. For my part I find the Corvette $$ is incredibly versatile, comfortable, and will suit pretty much any genre. If I could only keep one it would be the Corvette. But the Jazz has a classic look and sound. Horses for courses...
 25.
Apparently this one Mondial is mahogany with a maple top. Tasty.
As is this one: http://www.arbiter.co.uk/italia/electric_b...bass_guitar.htm In fact I think this is the one I played at Music Live - looks rather tasty!
