1.
Beautiful bass! If the original owner needs the correct covers, I have a pair (albeit ones from 1973), would look great on this :-) I'm trying to convince myself I don't want it!
+1. That is absolutely stunning!
  2. I voted Corvette. Not just on looks, but also because mine is so comfortable to play. Am gassing for a Thumb though, so who knows what I'll prefer in a week's time!
  3.
Hi dudes, just a quickie where is the nearest warwick dealer? I know there is one in Norwich, can anyone think of any others ?? Cheers
I don't know whether there are any Warwick dealers closer to Ipswich, but Cookes in Norwich had a very nice bolt on Thumb in stock when I was there on Christmas Eve, which they had priced at under £1,000.
  4. Surprised Town Called Malice hasn't got a mention so far. Another great line is Oliver's Army by Elvis Costello. I'm not sure who the bassist is, but it really underpins the song. And has By The Way, RHCP been mentioned yet? And another +1 for JJ Burnel
  5.
+4 TOTAL = 196
+7 Total = 203
  6. Bump Combo now sold, but the 2x10 cab is still available. Any interest before it goes of to Ebay?
  7. JJ Burnel looks just like he did in the 70s!

    From The Jam
Great pic Tony! However, I am sure he was using TWO Ampeg rack heads through an 8x10 when we played with them in Norwich. (may be one was a spare). To be honest, it lacked that classic "bite" he had back in the day. I wouldn't be surprised if he has changed to Marshall. Jay
He was certainly using a Marshall stack at Nottingham last week.

    From The Jam
I've had the pleasure of pointing my camera at these guys for two of their gigs and will probably do another one this week. They sound great, very tight, the sounds sound real good, everyone I've spoke to at the gigs enjoyed it, just heard one geezer saying it was sgit without weller! Bruce Foxton is a great player, probably the finest pick player I've heard for a long time! For info, Bruce is using a black P bass through a Marshall stack with 3 Boss pedals, a TU2, chorus and distortion (I think) Tony
Great photo! I saw them in Nottingham last week. As you say, Foxton is an outstanding pick player. Fantastic sound, and lots of energy - I hardly noticed Weller wasn't there!
  10.
The material that the strings are made out of also affects the tone, with stainless steel a little brighter than nickel.
+1. And stainless steel and nickel have a very different feel, even within the same brand. Unfortunately, which you prefer is entirely trial and error, and the only way to find out which you prefer is to try a number of different types, which can be costly!
  11.
I've just discovered it does have a tuner, but only by watching the 'movie' on the Line 6 website. Nowhere else in the spec on the site, or any others, has mention of the tuner Is it just taken for granted now that multi-effects units/pedals will have a tuner?
I've just bought one of these, and yes, it has a tuner! I actually like it. I have used other multi-effects in the past, but to be honest they tend to have loads of effects which I never use, and are fiddly to programme. The floor pod has a few basic (and usable) effects, and is very easy to programme. The amp models are decent enough (although the synth is pretty useless). A lot of the time I simply use it as a compressor and tuner, and it does both jobs well. My only reservation is that it does feel a bit plasticky next to, say, the Zoom B2.
  12.
For ultimate value, I'd go for a new Yamaha BB614 (the one with the active preamp & 3 band eq). Well under budget with that one. Otherwise, the ESP range you mentioned are good value. Just noticed that the Bass Centre are doing a "Tune Bass Maniac" for £329. Looks very good value
+1 on the Yamaha BB series, although personally I preferred the BB414 which is passive (and cheaper!). You should also check out the Ibanez SR500 which has a fantastic spec for the money, and the Warwick Rockbass series. I would also have a look at some of the OLP Musicman copies - they come in well below your budget and are very good value.
  13.
Most definitely the CIJ, the colour and fretboard alone would seal it for me! you could always add a Badass II afterwards and still have saved money!
+1. I have the CIJ 70s reissue and did just that. As well as the Badass, I've fitted some EMGs (although the stock pickups are good too) and it still came in at less than the Highway. The Highway is a good bass, but the CIJ is just lots of bass for the money. In terms of build quality, the CIJ is just as good as my MIA Jazz.
  14.
Sandberg California P: See more here: http://www.sandberg-guitars.de/main/mgal_calpmhg.html
Sandberg also do their ''Basic'' model with a P/MM configuration. Here's a link: http://www.sandberg-guitars.de/
  15.
Nice one. quite fancy seeing them myself but dont have the time. Did you check out my Sig? we have stopped pushing the band now as we have other commitments but i really enjoyed playing the Jam bass lines. Foxton had so much energy. hope he still has it. He didnt seem to with the Gift IMO.
Just checked out your sig - impressive stuff. Top bass lines, as you say. I've just got back from ''From the Jam''. Foxton was first rate - and playing a P with a pick. Lots of energy and obviously enjoying himself, and it was great to hear those songs (and basslines) live after so many years. To be honest, I hardly missed Weller at all!
  16.
Another from that era, Bruce Foxton. Lots of live stuff played on a P.
Good shout - and as it happens, I'm off to see Foxton with ''From the Jam'' in Nottingham tonight!
  17.
Anyone mentioned Sid Vicious yet?, nah, no wonder. Still, i remember he had a nice White P (with red stains all over it last time i looked) and stood holding a pick. :-)
Fair comment - he did look the part though! Glen Matlock, on the other hand, could play a bit. Did he play on Anarchy in the UK? That's actually quite a cool bassline!
  18. Not many places in the Midlands I'm afraid. Fairdeal Music in Birmingham had several combos in stock when I was there last week. I got mine from Music Scene in Mansfield, at a very good price, but their stock is small so it would be worth checking before making a trip. Otherwise, your best bet is probably Electro Music in Doncaster - a bit of a trek if you're in the Midlands, but they hold a decent stock, and are a very helpful bunch. I used mine with my band at a rehearsal last night for the first time, and was hugely impressed. With a loud drummer (aren't they all!) and two guitarists, I never went above 10 o'clock on the master volume. And I got a great tone from my Stingray - something my Ashdown never really nailed.
  19.
Jean Jaques Burnel with the Stranglers. CLASSIC Precision with a pick tone.
+1. And Paul Siminon with The Clash. London Calling just has to be played on a P with a pick!
  20.
Is it active?
The SR500? Yes, it has passive Bartolini pickups with an on board active 3 band pre-amp (meaning you can boost or cut Highs, mids and lows). And very good it is too.
  21.
thats for the opinions guys!!! The lack of low end might be a bit of a worry....I'll definetly have to give it a go, its between this or a Jazz or a Warwick with a little more saving so we'll see!
I would strongly recommend trying the Corvette $$ if you're considering a Warwick. You can pick them up pretty cheap on ebay at the moment. You'll certainly have no problem with lack of low end - the sound is huge.
  22. For that budget, and if you like slim necks, I would try the Ibanez SR500. Very versatile, good EQ, and Bartolini pickups. Fantastic spec for the money.
  23. I took the plunge and bought the Jeff Berlin model this morning (essentially the 1x15 combo without the tweeter). First impressions are very very good. And it sounds fantastic - very nice tight sound, especially for a 1x15. Much loader than my 300 watt Ashdown, sounds better, but half the weight!
  24.
It is a great bass, I would choose one over a US fender everytime, on build quality and ease of play. I do however prefer the SR500 range, which have the same hardware & 'tronics, but with a bolt-on wenge bubinga neck, mmm...
+1. The SR500 is amazingly good value for money. I prefer the bubinga neck (I think the SR900 has maple), and you still get the barts. You won't get a better bass for the money. The only reason I don't play one is that I prefer a fatter Precision neck profile - the SR necks are very thin.
