2. I like my bolt on Streamer LX, but there's no accounting for taste. I'd recommend sending him down to Electromusic in Doncaster, they usually have at least half a dozen Warwicks there, in fact they're listing 22 now!
3.
I appreciate your comments! I must admit, I am throwing it out there a bit, based on the sound of the clip I have heard. I am an EMGer, defintely.. so I hope I am not making too much of a wrong turn!! I like the tone of the Delanos! I'm having a 3 band EQ installed if there needs to be any tweaking involved!
Hi Dan, I think I may be reading too much into this, but I think you may need to consider other facts than how the p'ups sound on clips: external noise particularly. I'm pretty sure there's no 'mojo' in the manufacture/winding of simple pickups, and other than J/P/MM styles and series/parallel wiring there's not much difference between the Delano/Nordstrand/Bartollini brands other than the current fashion. The exception to this for me is active p'ups such as EMG/MEC/Status, who have a much lower noise floor for RF interferance from TVs, low-power lights and WiFi signals. I saw a pic of the doodle with some electro luminescent wire a while back. I was looking at attaching such things to basses, and for most I couldn't get the inverter withing 2 meters of most p'ups without getting a high pitched squeal, the exception to this was EMG or MEC loaded basses where I could sit the inverter 10 cm away without noise! I actually spent some time with Jon looking into this, and the only real solution was to use EMGs. Anyway, I'm certainly not trying to put you off the Delanos, they sounded very nice to me at BassDay, and I'm certain that with your experience you may already know all of this, but I just want to point out that there may be things that you can't EQ out that you may not be used to having been an EMG user.
4. I agree that its the string and construction that make the most difference: I've owned a 35" neck though who's B wasn't as good as that on my 34" bass because I was using the same size string, and with the longer scale length it was too tight, giving it no resonance or sustain. You really have to experiment to see what works for you, and while it may not be worth a £50 professional new nut & set up, it may be worth buying the bits and learning how to do it yourself (its really quit easy I found).
5. That is very nice, I do like Rob's work a lot! ... although I'm still far more jealous of your triumph.
6. That is a nice spec Dan! Just one question about your choice of p'ups: The Delanos, previously you've very much been an EMG active person, having tried them at Bassday, I think that the Delanos are quite different (unless they're making an active one I've missed). I'd hate to think it was just that they are the current fashion and Nordstrand are now out of favour?
7. I used to have a Samson Airline 'bug' type, which was ok, but I think I'd go for a more expensive one if I bought another wireless.
I have a Yamaha TRB4 and the jack socket is a little temperamental in that the lead needs to be very firm ( currently use a monster cable ) so it needs to be a tight fit.
Monster cables have oversized jacks, and therefore it will have bent the internal contacts in the bass, which is what would be causing other cables to now have intermittent contact. No wireless that I know of has over-sized jacks, therefore you may have a problem. However its an easy fix in that you'll just have to re-bend the contacts in the jack socket (sorry, no idea how difficult this is on a Yamaha). You will have to do that if you're want to be sure of a good fit with any other cable after using the monster.
8. Excellent, I saw that shot somewhere else yesterday and thought that that one would look particularly nice with the wenge's grain changing direction as the neck-section curves.
9. a +1 for UPC: a 29kg amp head (inc rack case) insured for £500 sent from Yorkshire to Somerset in 48 hours for £37. The only downside was waiting for the pick-up between 2 & 5pm, but as an alternative I could have dropped it at their depot.
10.
Are the boost switch & pot 'standard issue', or optional extras? Cheers.
They came as standard on mine.
11. For some reason I want to eat it. I'm not sure if that's good.
12. ^ lol, best series of comments in the thread! Edit: I will +1 to bass_ferret though.
Until ERB's reach a wider audience - how ever that can be defined - I shall continue to refer to it as stunt, circus, musical novelty act and whatever derogatory term I can come up with next. Its gotta be more than the freak show at the trade show. I would even like it to be more than the freak show at the trade show. I didn't make the world.
13. I much prefer 2*10 cabs that are stacked vertically, due to the smaller footprint but higher top. The sound of the cabs will vary massively from one manufacturer to another though.
14. I have an 8-string range across 2 basses: a 5-string Warwick streamer LX strung F#-B-E-A-D, and a new ACG 6'er strung E-A-D-G-C-F. I had a 7-stringer for a while (B-F), but I found that that number of strings was too many for me to handle to keep them from resonating and causing other noises: I really like to use open strings to play off, therefore tying a scrunchy round the 1st fret seemed a rubbish idea to me. Anyway, I'm all for extended range, but there's no way I can use >6 strings as that's just not comfy for my hands or practical for me. I've found songs in a band setting where the extra low is great, and others the extra high, but I've never found one where I needed >6 in a single song, so I'm happy to have the other on a stand. As a further note, due to the size of the F# string, I can't put one on a >5 unless I play it a chest-level, which is again something I don't like.
15. I'm pretty sure the headless single cut (4 string) was sold by bassday at least. There was another there that was very nice though (5 string IIRC) Stunning bass Si, nice one!
16. BigRedX has a pair, I'd send him a PM. I've always fancied one, the way they combine wood and carbon fibre is very interesting.
17. That looks excellent, I look forward to the finished article!
18. Just got my 4th or 5th order of cables from Dave, this time a 1 m Speakon-Jack. I ordered it on Wednesday, it arrived on Friday, I'm very happy with the quality, communication, price etc. I'll need a pair of 1.5 m sp-sp cables in the next few weeks, so I certainly know where I'm getting them! David.
19.
But humans can't really hear anything below 40Hz?
No, 20 Hz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_hearing We can hear it, but it needs a very serious rig to produce it (or just use head phones as they need much less power). D.
20. Across my basses I have -2 strings (F# and and + 2 strings (C and F) in addition to E A D G, so I think I'm fairly in the zone for an ERB target forum, however I can't see the point of a dedicated forum unless all the FX, amps, basses, theory etc. are duplicated, and I think they serve ok, so I voted no.
21. It'll be years before that bass sounds as good again (also note that the sound was better through the full amp). It's something for me to aim for though.
22. Bassday I assume you mean? I was there from 12-19:00, it was really great! The best player by far for me was Hadrien Feraud, he was on 21:00-10:00, so I missed his actual set, but he played for about 20 min on the ACG stand, and I actually found it way better than the other performances! I was great catching up with so many people too.
23. I'm not going to take a side here (other than saying across 2 basses I have a 7 string range ), but in the music section of the museum of Geneva there are instruments that are hundreds of years old, look like upright basses, but have frets and 6+ strings!! I should be going back in the next couple of months so I'll try to find out more.
