In reality this would be unlikely. I can see the unit being parked in a corner during band rehearsals to capture ideas that might otherwise be forgotten and for me at home to use for practice (e.g. record stuff on a fretted bass and play along to on my fretless for intonation purposes) or to record my noodlings and such. Inbuilt microphone therefore a bonus! Could ask my son to record a few drum patterns for me to play along to as well I guess.

Hi team I looking for a small and hopefully realtively inexpensive digital recording device for a bit of home noodling and maybe capturing band rehearsals. Spec doesn't have to be massive, maybe the opportunity to record 3 or 4 separate tracks and output as an MP3 file (or similar). A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I used to have a Pandora's Box - did the job, menus very fiddly (I prefer knobs) though. Probably used 5% of what it could do but put off by the complexity of actually using it although I imagine that user interfaces have moved on a bit now. There seems to be a pile of stuff out there and I'm stuggling to really comprehend the capabilties of the various products against one another. I strongly suspect I will only use a fraction of that capability in any case, so for me ease of use and a degree of idiot-proofness (is that a word?) would score highly! I'd really welcome some pointers to good things, and also the don't go there type products too. Budget wise maybe upto £150? But I don't yet know if that's realistic. Thanks in advance.

Fantastic groove there. Note to self - practice more...

Have you tried Thomastik JFs, they're not smooth in the same way Picatos are (although I quite like that and have them on a couple of basses).

Just acquired a MIJ Jazz F/L from Grahame. Really easy to deal with, came superbly packaged in a hard case and even included the original Fender P/ups that had been replaced by Wizzards on the bass. All my PMs answered quickly and everything was exactly as described. A genuine top banana. Thanks very much, I would highly commend him to all BCers and would even vote for him in an election as I'm sure he'd try and keep his promises

I put an e-mail request to Strings Direct today to ask to be notified when more D'Addario singles were in stock only to get a reply saying that they were being discontinued. Don't know if anybody else has heard this. Was offered a set of Roto flats in the same gauges (45-68-80-110) for £30 delivered (inc VAT ).

Schaller Strap locks - SOLD

For sale are my surplus to requirement Schaller strap locks. The full set look to me to be Nickel - the box says Chrome but I'm sure it's not the one they came in. But they look ever so slightly bluer that what I perceive to be the Chrome ones. There are a pair of the fittings that attach to the strap in Gold (I rather carelessly left the guitar end screwed into my Spector when I sold it), and a second pair of strap fittings in Chrome (I believe, same thing with another bass £20 the lot inc. postage. Here's a pic to clarify:

Since I can't get hold of the "right" gauges in the D'Addario Chrome flats I'm going to try a set of Thomastik JF344 that get a bit closer to balanced tension at 43-56-70-100 to see if my fingers find it easier to deal with - if only the A had been 75...

Just found Ken Smith Balanced string sets on String Busters http://www.stringbusters.com/Ko-Bespoke/productlist.asp?cat=1/BASS+STRINGS/BASS+STRINGS+KEN+SMITH
I've concocted a set from singles I've found available in the UK, just d'addario's 45-60-80-110 which is roughly tension balanced looking at the chart and under £20 for the set.
May I ask where you sourced them? The cheapest I've managed to find for the same strings came to £24.20 + P&P (stringsdirect website).

I presume the rules apply to flats too, but all the strings I've seen on-line so far are rounds. Yet to check Newtone though.

Rats, too slow on the draw!

Saw The Tubes in Southampton in 1980 or 81 - great show.
Are these the ones that Alex C alluded to in his recent BGM? And +1 for the link request!
The very same! I looked on t'interweb and found a couple of US based suppliers here: http://circlekstrings.com/store/Gauges_And_Tension.html The tension pdf download is interesting, and if you look at the different tensions on a "standard" set of 105-85-65-45s there's a huge difference compared to the balanced tension offerings. There's also these guys http://www.bassstringsonline.com/Custom-Balanced--Stainless-Steel-Round-Wound_c_23.html you can actually nominate your gauges in a pick and mix although it looks like some companies are less generous with the variety of gauges on offer. Ken Smith strings seem to give the best spread. Not seen a UK based supplier yet although I'm sure I've seen posts about companies that will let you specify what you want, not sure about costs though? Postage, duty and VAT clearly apply on US goods, but if there's some demand then I could potentially organise a bulk order.

I'd never encounterd these until recently. Has anybody used them on here and do the feel as good as the PR says they should?

Interesting topic. It would be good to know how many strings are made each year as I suspect the machinery is pretty quick nowadays. I used to work in an electrical cable making factory and the capital cost of the machines was high so they had to be run efficiently with minimal change-over times. I can't imagine string winding machinery is greatly different so if the 15 companies above are all churning them out ...well it's one for a spreadsheet I think! There will be cries of "these are hand wound strings made by virginal elves high in the Andes where the air is pure" - again if it's like a cable that means somebody is watching the machine and making the odd adjustment (more often on the older machinery). I also had the chance to visit a synthetic yarn making company in Italy recently converting pellets of platic into yarn. Unbelievable place, fully automated about 250,000 sq.ft. most of it unlit and employed about 20 people in the production facility turning out squillions of kms of yarn each year.

Bridge all sorted and the bass is as wonderful as ever. Gig in Colne on Saturday If I had a BC "status" it would now be "happy bunny".

I'm using one of the Overwater padded straps. Over 4" wide and with a short piece of elastic on one of the buckles that stops any "jarring". Can't see them on the site any more. IIRC about £40

Has anyone heard anything more about the fretless basses e.g. spec, finishes, prices, availability etc? I'm looking to purchase a fretless bass soon and would hate to think I might have missed out on a sister for my CJ4?
