1. Just had my MIM P bass set up and neck shimmed by Jack in Salford. Excellent service, completed ahead of schedule and a thoroughly nice guy to deal with. http://www.jacksinstrumentservices.com/
2. There have been a number of recent threads on the merits or otherwise of Jazz and Precision basses so I started wondering how the various basses are represented in BC. The question is "which P and/or J basses do you currently own" Some guidelines for voters: 1. I don't know how to do multiple choices if members have, say, three Fender Js. So please pick your favoured model. However if you have a Fender, a Squier and a clone you can vote for all three. 2. Apologies to Squier afficionados, I not familiar with the marque and I don't know if there are equivalents to MIAs and MIMs etc so you only have one box for each type. 3. By clone I mean basses very obviously replicating the classic J and P. So for example, to pick one of my basses, the Overwater Contemporary Jazz doesn't count as a Jazz bass. 4. Not bothered about the number of strings or whether your bass hass frets. 5. Non-J/P option is catered for. 6. Please don't vore for your GAS basses or basses you have moved on. Enjoy!
3. Close to the Edge was the first LP I ever bought. The whole thing is a magical moment for me
4. I don't know if you've spotted this: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/167982-headphones/ I beleive the V6s are well regarded but have no personal experience.
5. I have Moon Safari CDs so a +1 for the suggestion WalMan
6. Sorry, I'm strictly a Jetglo kinda guy. However in that style of finish I could tollerate it along with the Maple.
7.
....and don't even get me started on Los Endos, also from Seconds Out.
For me SO is one of the best live albums I know of. The CD version even has the tracks in the order I remember them (although it was a little while ago), I love listening to it through my headphones, volume turned up a tad, in a dimly lit room - just like being there again.
8. Brother Dave's website http://brotherdave.com/resources.htm has plenty of Fender info etc., might be worth a look.
9. I'm a big fan of my Tascam MP-BT1 Bass Trainer thingy acquired from a BCer not too long ago.
10. For me there's a moment in Firth of Fifth (by Genesis for the uninitiated ) where the song moves into a sweeping keyboard (I know, I know) passage that for me really creates the whole atmosphere of the song.
11. I've a pair of Audio Technica over ear cans that are really sweet but they are open so no good to you. Try the hifi-headphones website that has good recommendations and gives you an idea of the cost too. Then (obviously) hunt for the best deal http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/
12. How could you do such a thing when I've just posted on another thread about being good and not submitting to GAS attacks I'm going to have to lock myself in the cellar again now
13. I couldn't handle the suspense so I invested my squids in a PW unit. Very happy, it picks up the E string fine - don't know what a low B string is, some form of underwear possibly?
14.
...But, it did seem to wake up a music scene that had perhaps become a little stale and complacent...
Same here really. I'm a massive prog rock fan so it woke me up from shuffling around gigs in flares and tie dyes. I do like some of it more from the point of view of its place in musical history and the fact that Punk needed to happen than any technical ability to marvel at.
15. No, not really as it was a very modest Squier Affinity P Bass. My second bass that replaced it was a Spector Legend 4 and that I do miss more and more - sold to a fellow BCer only a few months ago after several years of faultless service
16. The salutory learning point for me was my Rickenbacker. I had always loved the look and on top of that some of my favourites bassists played them. After 4 years of squirrelling away spare cash I eventually saved up enough to be able to afford a lovely Jetglo 4003, as apart from Mr Squire's white one there is no other colour - ducks behind the sofa... The neck was sweet and stable, the bass was in grest condition and I could live with the frankly weird bridge, but the real nightmare was that I couldn't find a comfortable position for my right hand. As a finger style player taking the pickup cover off would have worked, but in doing that you loose the whole look imo, so after much agonising I sold it (at a modest profit which helped a bit). When I was trying it out the first time (about 30 minutes or so of playing) I was not focussed on this in particular, more worried about drooling over it pre-purchase. Now I try to be more objective and try to use all my senses when afflicted by GAS. Colour wise my preference is for natural wood, but as only one of my basses is finished in this way I will now claim that I am cured of the "must have one" thing - I hope . I'm not a big fan of blue basses or guitars for some reason, completely irrational I know.
17. Have a bump on me for a stunning looking bass. Proud owner myself.
18. I bought an MIM P from a BCer recently. The neck on it is really nice, although the pocket is a little "over accommodating". (Jack - Salford based luthier - is sorting it out for me as I type). The bass is otherwise fine, it's a 2002 vintage, and in beautiful condition and for what it cost I personally feel that I have had very good value. Opinions are mixed, but there also seems to be a degree of variations in quality from USA instruments too. I suspect that most will say try a number of basses if you can find them (there's a couple on ebay at the moment and I think I remember seeing one on here). You're welcome to try mine if you fancy an outing - but it's not for sale! If you have a read of the £200 bass challange thread in General Discussion you may get some ideas. There's a cracking looking Yamaha BB200 (precision look alike) that was listed at £125 but the seller has not relisted since but you could always contact him if you have an account. Here's the link: Yamaha BB200 Sorry looks like I was a bit slow typing!
19. The River - Bruce Springsteen (not certain if the jury would accept this as a "slow" song) Echoes - Pink Floyd Questionning Eyes - Breathing Space Plus numerous classical pieces and slow movements within them!
20. I've tried a set of Roto's iirc but didn't really get it. Flats on everything now except the Contemp Jazz that has the lightweight rounds it came with and that I rather like.
21. Since settling on an MB500 plus Barefaced cabs I've not looked back. So maybe keep the amp and look at the Barefaced cabs.
22. Don't know what your budget is, but Westone have the UM range that is specifically designed as pro IEMs. The link here will give you some idea. Personally I use a pair of Westone 2 for normal iPod style listening (2 drivers in each side - awesome sound). The UMs are meant to be even better. http://www.hifiheadphones.co.uk/westone-man-41.html
23.
No, completely different. The thumpinator is a low pass filter (I understand), whereas the RH amps perform compression or some other related trickery to make their amps sound a bit louder when they are pushed.
Is it not a high pass filter but with a very LF cut-off? Sorry must have been typing at the same time as JakeBrownBass
24.
At the risk of being flamed to death.... Many of these are the reason(s) that I'm either in an originals band... Or not in a band at all. I understand that these may be as a part of lucrative function/covers band arrangement.... But I'd just stand there and play it like a zombie. For some reason, I only enjoy playing something that I've had some input into, for better or worse. In the last band I was in, we did "All along the Watchtower..." and I hated it. Quite obviously my mileage varies significantly... And limits (severely) my ability to find a band...
As a band we have made the decision to play as much of our own stuff as we think we can get away with. This means sets will vary from 100% own brand to maybe 70% covers. At a recent gig where we were playing about 50/50 we got asked to play more of our original material which was great - so not all doom and tribute bands!
25. It's OK people, I'm better now!
NB I would think based on spec the Thumpinator would be an excellent match for the Barefaced cabs, which quite a few people are running.
I had a quick e-mail exchange with Alex in relation to the Barefaced issue and he's a big fan of this type of unit. Anyway "Buy Now" was clicked upon yesterday, not sure whether it was in time or not though.
