1. People buy from people. For me it's all about the staff and they you are treated whether you are Jaco or just old Jack. For things like strings I pretty much buy on line now because it's so easy. I imagine that if you try to stock every brand and gauge combination that people want you could end up with a lot of slow moving stock. Simple Pareto analysis will tell you that 80% of your sales will come from 20% of your stock lines. It then depends upon whether you want to take that risk with customers. Tricky decision at the best of times. I think a good preloved section would be interesting although you're up against ebay et al which is pretty pure in terms of establishing what the real market value of main stream goods really is.

3. Nnnnoooooooo! Go unlined or you'll keep peeking!
4. Just acquired an Antoria Tele bass from Ash. Complete gent and so easy to deal with as has been said here many times. Thanks very much.
5.
There's even some bassists who don't have a clue what notes they are playing, they just memorise everything
Yeah, but in my defense it helps guard against premature memory loss
6.
I have a nearly new set of Rotos for sale if you are interested - heavy gauge but not high tension, they sound similar to GHS Precision flats to me.
Thanks for the offer, but still on the fence atm...
7. My preferred flats are the TI JF344s or the Fender CL9050s fwiw.
8. If you're looking for a nice unlined Jazz then my former MIJ 62 RI fretless is with Drew in the Manchester Bass lounge. I can tell you what he paid for it too!

10.
Or, as you're only in Bolton we could meet up and you could have a play with mine...
Ditto, please feel free to get in touch if you'd like to try mine too.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.
12. Does the fact that by and large these strings are pretty heavy gauge that the tension is correspondingly high or is that just the effect of the wrapping?
13. I thought I might try a set out. Do any of you fine people have good/bad experiences that are noteworthy? The ones that immediately spring to mind are the Rotos, D'Addriao and Picato offerings, but I presume there are others out there.
14. I prefer the slightly lighter gauge Fender CL9050s at 45/60/80/105.
15. There's a re-issue one here http://manchesterbasslounge.com/?s=burns

17. Sorry, didn't see you post!
18. I don't know how to judge if they are legit or not, but if you're in the market here's the link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130862456855?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
19. If I had unlimited funds I'd love to own a Ritter bass. Enjoying the aesthetics of your bass imho is part of the pleasure of picking it up to play and practice. My personal choice would be the Roya body shape.
20. What's been said really from my point of view. Try and play sympathetically with the feel of the song and with what you hear and don't overplay early on as achknalligewelt said above. I love writing originals with our band - far more than playing covers. Carpe diem.
21. That's bad. I listened to 10 Years After an a lot when I first got into music.

23. How about this, in stock now so none of the agonising waiting http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Available/46/

What flats?

I'm going to lob the Fender CL9050s into the mix. Nice strings, not too stiff, in the gauge range you want and good value at £20 or so a set.
