1. Hello folks, I'd been looking at getting a high quality replica of a pre-CBS Precision, and the opportunity has come up to purchase a fine example of a '61. It has been refinished (sympathetically and authentically and to an exceptional standard, but still a refin), and has had a refret and a new pickup and pots installed. Case, hardware, strap, covers all original. It will cost about double what the reproduction does... but it is an original 61 P. Thoughts?
2. I really shouldn't... but how much does it weigh?
3. Does it have a passive/active switch?
4. It's a pretty amazing piece of kit, especially for the money. I have two Canadian Dingwalls and this doesn't compare badly to them, all things considered.
5. Quite a lot of interest and a couple offers so far, but still here for now.
6. I've decided to sell my SRFF806 as the neck is just too slim for me (I have hand issues). As new, freshly set up, and listed in the Classifieds.

8. 2015 Fender FSR Classic 60s Lacquer Precision. Purchased as I wanted to see if the "P" thing was for me, and delivered so spectacularly that I'm going straight to the top and seeking out a nice vintage example. This is a Factory Special Run (Limited Edition) finished in a super-thin lacquer coat that not only lets the bass resonate like crazy (you have to try it), but will also age beautifully like the classic nitro lacquer finishes from the 60s pre-CBS era. Think of it as a relic that you will do yourself and will bear the genuine marks of your own use. Super lightweight alder body (bass weighs just 3.7kg) finished in vintage white, rosewood board, select Fender pickups, passive volume and tone, vintage-style reverse tuners. Very good condition other than some buckle rash (this lacquer is VERY thin) and hairline polish scratches mainly to the pickguard, only left the house for one very careful gig. I've had it fully set up professionally with a fret level so it plays incredibly well with a medium-low action. Was £930 new, spent around £100 on the fret level and full setup, so offered (with genuine Fender gigbag in as new condition) at £700 ono. Stunning Japanese workmanship and value. If it doesn't sell, then I'll keep it as a backup to the vintage P I plan to procure. Lots of high res photos here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wxx2j83oujlabpp/AAB_yKsXzlbCs4bcorw620lPa?dl=0 I am based in London SE3. Edit: May be interested in local trades for more battered vintage-type P or Mustang type Fender basses (ideally nitro in vintage white, sunburst, or faded fiesta red a la Pino, with a tort guard) with cash either way for the right deal.
9. 2015 Ibanez Soundgear SRFF806 "fanned-fret" six string bass. Purchased as I've always wanted a six string with narrow spacing, active/passive electronics and fanned frets, and this ticked all those boxes - alas the neck is just a little too slim for me and I can't play it for long periods. I've literally only just had it set up by the brilliant boys at Feline Guitars (Jonathan and Tom), and the action is beautifully on the low side of medium. This same bass model is a favourite of no less a luminary in the bass world than Dave Swift who plays with Jools Holland, and anyone who has tried fanned frets will attest that it takes mere minutes to get used to it. Beautifully balanced sound with a tight low B (35.5") and a singing high C (33.6"). Swamp ash body with beautiful grain finished in antique charcoal grey, very stable five piece laminate neck, bar inlays, cosmo black hardware, custom 3-band Ibanez electronics with selectable mids and active/passive switch. Strung (I believe) with the original D'Addario roundwounds in good nick. I've added a small piece of foam under the strings at the headstock to stop the strings ringing beyond the nut, but it is very easily removable if you wish (I think it looks better in addition to making acoustic practice more tolerable as the bass is so resonant). Lots of high res photos here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lmprmyabgos98dh/AAAqMVqsgdNh4Ag6xYQ-u0Sja?dl=0 Absolutely immaculate condition, has never left the house other than going to get set up, I can't find a scratch or dent anywhere. £849 new, £700 ono. I am based in London, SE3.
10.
I don't think so, but they're incredibly hard to find, and as with all Fenders they gain value, I do believe it's worth every penny, obviously I'd like to get as much as poss for it, without stinging anyone on the way, would be interested to hear peoples views on it as there's very few of them out there to compare with, pricewise that is.
I wasn't going to comment, but you specifically requested comparisons... I sold a white one earlier this year for less money than this to find my Dingwall Super J, and it had some very premium upgrades including a J-Retro Deluxe, a custom tort guard, Hipshot string retainer and Warwick adjustable brass nut. I probably underpriced it as it went within an hour, but that was with a £200 pre and £100 of hardware on it. There has been a four string sold on Basschat, for price comparison, accessible through search.
11. Thanks for the heads up - a pack of a dozen ordered!
12. Really wanted one of these when I was younger!
13.
I contacted Dave in relation to a couple of stands he was giving away - I was hoping that he'd donate these to the forthcoming Herts Bash's raffle. Unfortunately for us, the early bird catches the worm and Dave had agreed to donate them to another BCer who was going to pass these on to a school. I was just glad that they were going to a good cause and I'm posting this in recognition of Dave's generosity. good man...
I am the teacher at the school and can confirm this - Dave didn't even charge me full price for the shipping! A true gent. Thank you, they'll be well used.
14. Sharing as I think it may be relevant here. From my beautiful friends Loretta and Natasha who lost their father quite recently, and then found that his flat had been burgled afterwards. I quote Tash here: "Any musicians & bass players in particular please be on the look out for if you hear about this vintage bass. This belonged to my Dad who had passed away some 3 weeks before it was stolen from his flat, it's all we had left to us to remember him by. The guitar holds many memories as he was a professional musician before my sister Loretta and I were born, any help getting them returned would be so appreciated." --------- https://www.facebook.com/JohannTingMusic/posts/10154796455517932 Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a burglary in which two guitars were stolen. The incident is believed to have occurred on Saturday, 29 October at a property in North Twelfth Street, Milton Keynes. The offender/s is believed to have gained entry to the property through the back door. A Gibson EB-2 Sunburst Hollow body single pickup bass guitar (pictured), which is more than 40-years-old, and a 1980s BBC00 Yamaha guitar, were stolen from the property. Investigating officer Det Con Chris Bigg, based at Milton Keynes police station, said: “This burglary has caused distress to the family, and these guitars hold great sentimental value to them. “I am therefore appealing to anyone who might have any information about this incident, or anyone involved in it, to come forward and contact Thames Valley Police on the non-emergency number 101.”
15. I tried the Contra at the London Bass Show - it's stunning in every way.
16.
An eb3 if long scale should get just the same action as a sadowsky or any other higher end instrument. Any good luthier should be able to get any bass to play excellently given the time.
Assuming the neck is in good shape and the hardware is sufficiently adjustable of course.
17. I'm the opposite, I raise the action slightly for recording to minimise buzz, but my live basses are set up slinky.
18. I have one of these that in considering parting with, let me know if you're interested.
19. There's a Sadowsky Metro in the classifieds for under £1.5k at the minute...
20. I expect other people to treat my gear AT LEAST as carefully as I do, it's what I would do for theirs.
21. Chris is based near Ipswich and is a top top bloke!
22. Did you make the sticker?
23.
I don't know exactly but has an intermediate weight, if you are really interested I can weigh. (I don't have scale in my house)
Yes weight please. Also what do the controls do?
24. Really like my Sadowsky Metro. Beautiful grain, outstanding playability, exceptionally well made, lightweight at 8.5lb, a fantastic preamp with a VTC (switchable to passive if desired and fairly transparent), and good resale value if it comes to that, given that I bought it secondhand.
25. I traded my Combustion (+cash) for colgraff's Super J and can attest that it was well cared for and that he was a true gentleman throughout our interaction. Whoever gets this will not only get a stellar bass but will also be doing a kind deed for his family.
