The 2eq boards are unchanged under EB. I think John East had a 76 as reference. The early pre-ebs, approx 76 to 78 had differing circuits. Leo was still experimenting perhaps. How different I don't know. Never been able to do a test of my 78 against an older 2eq
-
Hi, got a 87 ray 3eq, had since new. Played a few times againt recent examples. Not a lot of difference. other than change in bridge, comp nut and oil finished necks, the principal difference is fingerboard radius. My 87 and 78 are the same. Newer stingrays have flatter fingerboards, less curved. Pickups are also flat. No raised poles. Meaning any G volume problems are probably easier to fix.

Go 2nd hand and get the real deal
Yes lets hear all about it,There are a few clean pre EB's about and Im lucky to have one of them, Although one with loads of mojo does appeal to me too. Im going to have a play about with pup heights and stuff with mine and a full fettle from the EBS_Freak when we get time. I will put a post up with our findings after.Im wondering if lowering the E end rather than trying to bring the G too close is the answer as mine has a lot more output than my EB so I have some to spare then pump the amp up to suit.
That is too true. With the older pre-EBs, the magnets were huge. The problem is not low volume on G but rather excessive volume from the E. Thus on my '78, the pickup is lowered on E side as far as can go. In addition Martin at the Gallery tapped the E string magnet further inside the pickup cover. String volume balance is perfect.

Looks really good. If you buy it, you need extra long strings (or use Ernie Balls standard) due to string thru' body bridge. Currently its strings are too short. Check the E in photo
-
I agree its not the pole and string alignment. I have 2 rays, a '78 which is aligned dead on the G center but then off on the E, and a 1987 which is other way round. On both, I have raised the G end of the pick up and also use heaver G string gauge (45) with a 100 on E. Volume balance is perfect. The problem causing the low G is the large size of the magnets, and in particular their depth. Pre-EBs are generally worse (imo) as the magnets were deeper in the early production years.
2 jacks so you can daisy-chain them. Input in to the cab and out to another one
Thanks dude ! How can you tell which is which ?
-
hi, probably dumb question. Just picked up 2 MarkBass Traveler Cabs (2 x 10). Each cab has one speakon and 2 1/4 inch jacks. Question : why 2 1/4 inch jacks ? What's the difference between them (if any) ? Thx

Never thought I would do this but hey Up for sale (no trades) is my 1978 Stingray. Had this for many years. Its all original, complete with epoxy pre-amp. Been refretted of course, as to be expected for a 32 year old bass. Selling for £1,600 including hard case (though not original). Collection from West London only. And now the photies....... Feedback all good.

Its difficult to get regular Mon-Thu evening slots in London rehearsal studios we've tried. Consequently, used a lot of different places. Some are great, e.g. Terminal, Joint & Fortress. Some are ok; Alaska & Premises. Some are good but out the way; Creek Others are crap; Enterprise Any recommendations ? Looking for clean large rooms w/quality gear. Thx

obi 2 kenobi replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Ah, unfortunately it had some issues issues with the neck when it arrived. I decided against waiting for another as it put me off in a way. Big Al 5 and Ray 5 will be more than enough anyway
Can you pm me with details as I am considering selling my pre-eb to buy a Classic. Thx

Larry Graham had a great sound by first GCS record in '74. Granted before that it was arguably undefined when with Sly. Other guys in the same period (Louis Johnson, Pops, etc) also had a kind of muffled slap tone on the P basses at the time. Personally I prefer the Louis's stingray tone on Blam from '78 to the among best recorded slap tone. Which is another reason why rays > p bass IMO Other great early slap sounds are from Byron Miller (on p bass with George Duke and Roy Ayers). Also check out Abe Laboriel, esp. on Chaka Khan (Night in Tunisia) and w/ George Benson 'Give me the nIght album
