  1. Maybe I'm over-simplifying things here (apologies if I am) but is output so important? If you like the tone of the Dirnt P, just turn the amp up a bit for that bass. A "hot" pickup is not necessarily a good pickup...
  2. The seller was correct (although EMG do make some active pickups as well, but it's most likely that you have a J-set and they are passive with a preamp). Also bear in mind that Fender have notoriously variable quality control! Some instruments are just better put together from better parts than others, and no amount of modding will make a bad one as good as a good one. It's frustrating, but maybe try and borrow another P bass from someone (or try some in a shop). It may just be this particular P that has this particular problem. From a personal point of view, I have always found P basses more variable than Jazzes.
  3. Wow! It looks like boiling toffee... Gorgeous
  4. Tim lectures in Music Production at Newcastle College. He teaches my son. Small world... "My band" is Rush. No contest. Apart from Marilliion perhaps. And maybe Level 42 for a period....
  5. And replied...
  6. I've not had this lovely bass long (traded through this very forum!), but I have my eye on something else and need to release some funds! Made in 2009. Condition-wise I would give it 9/10 as there are a couple of small, superficial dings and scratches (which I will try to show in photos) but nothing that affects playability. Plays beautifully, with one of the nicest necks I've ever played. Sounds monstrous, and has a huge range of tones from the two humbuckers - often described as a "Jazz bass on steroids", and I can see where that reference comes from! Balances very well, with no neck-dive at all (although I only use wide straps). Recently strung with DR Hi-Beams. Not heavy at around 8lb 6oz (according to my kitchen scales). Just feels like a serious quality instrument! Comes in the original hard case, which is so plush that my cat has it's eye on it as a bed! These pics will do for now, but I will take some more ASAP. Any questions just ask. I'm happy to ship this, but obviously this will be at the purchaser's expense (and risk). I will deliver locally (North East and North West England, and South West Scotland) for petrol expenses. I would much prefer a cash sale, but if you have anything in a Status, Fender Jazz-type, G&L, Musicman or Yamaha style and fancy a trade, just shout! No amps or cabs required thanks (unless it's an EAD Foundation 212!!)
  7. Withdrawing this. Too good to let go!
  8. Last chance, otherwise I'll be giving this to my son for his birthday on Monday (yes, he does play bass and guitar!). He'd probably rather have the cash though...
  9. I've got a Thunder 1, which is the passive version of this bass (and not in as good condition). They are stunningly well made for the price-point, with excellent playability and sounds. Good price too!
  10. Any interest in trades at all?
  11. Rosewood according to the specs... but it does look very dark. http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Bass/Gibson-USA/Thunderbird-IV-Bass/Specs.aspx
  12. Try playing either of these (no nasty Adam Clayton comments please!) without using open strings...
  13. Half-hearted bump. Thinking of withdrawing this due to lack of interest and a desire to hang on to it...
  14. Fair enough, but the thread title refers to "love" for Jaco (well, his playing I assume!). It is possible to appreciate his playing but not love it. I love some of it, but other stuff (like the example above) leaves me a bit cold. Still, even a master musician can have an off day...
  15. Absolutely! But then sometimes taste goes out of the window... For example:
  16. I'm still happy with my lightweight (Markbass LM2 and Barefaced Compact) rig. When i have heard it used by other bassists I have been astounded by the sheer tonal authority coming out of such a small and light package. After twenty years of humping around a Trace Elliot stack, this pleases me greatly!
  17. Great combo - but if you sell this you will be gormless...
  18. Does it have a fitted cover? And I take it you're not interested in trades?
  19. Is that a completely flat (zero radius) fingerboard?
  20. Shame G&L didn't undertake that thinking process before coming up with this monstrosity...
  21. Wow indeed!! Superfast now!
  22. PM at you!
