1.
Err, I think this started as a happy thread, sadly ruined by argumentative pendants.
Ruined?! How is it ruined? I've learned a lot by reading this thread - a lot more than I would have learned from a twee "Isn't Herbie Flowers a top gent" thread. (Not that I'm suggesting that he isn't a top gent of course!)
  2.
Could it be that you like the scooped-mid voicing of the LH500 less than the sound of other amps? You could try running the LH500 with the midrange turned to full and the bass and treble around 1, which should bring the EQ somewhere close to flat.
I always do that. The 2,10,2 setting is supposed to be approximately "flat", but I find it still a bit mid-poor and bass-heavy. There are times when I cut the bass control completely in order to get more mid-range. Of course, using a J bass with both pickups on full most of the time doesn't help...
  3.
I don't know if it's because it's not a valve amp which the Hartke is...
Actually, the Hartke only has one valve - in the preamp stage. It is really a solid state amp with a "bit" of valve warmth thrown in. The trouble is that there are so many variables here. I did a similar thing at my band's rehearsal last week. We are practicing for an upcoming "quiet" gig so in an effort to minimise the carry-in I used my Ashdown Perfect 10 (30W) combo instead of my usual LH500 and Barefaced Big One. I really liked the sound - even though (or maybe because) the Ashdown was running flat out! I couldn't (and wouldn't) use it for a full-on rehearsal or gig, but a lower volumes it actually sounded pretty good!
  4.
Which amp would you suggest for a funk player? I really like sounds like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZJj70B2IJc
What you are hearing there is the sound of the bass and, more importantly, the player - not the amp itself. If you are in the US, then Carvin would be a great place to start looking. But what is your speaker? When you say "DIY" do you mean that you built the cabinet yourself? If so, no offence, but how competent are you? Did you use a top-spec driver or a cheap one? It all matters...
  5.
Interesting that you've decided matching headstocks because YOU like them, not all your customers will agree.
Maybe - but I LOVE them!!
  6.
I'd never call him a great bass player
Depends what your definition of a "great bass player" is, doesn't it?
Awesome. For me, what bass playing is all about.
For me too. So many of the so-called "greats" are all about technique and using ten notes when one will do. Deacon is/was the antithesis of that approach. Not that he couldn't play a complex line mind... but it would tend to be complex from a melody point of view rather than just being "difficult to play". For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJU-E-Etop8
  7. Have you still got the BQC?
  8.
My Barefaced Big One was £400 second hand on here and it's brilliant.
Yep. Mine was a tad more than that but involved a trade... you can certainly pick up a used gen2 Compact for £400 or less. They are certainly loud enough for your needs and so light and portable that it is laughable!
  9. P - 1.75 nut - CAR - dots (ideally on maple) - tort guard J - 1.50 nut - Surf Green - blocks 'n' binding on maple - tort guard In fact, my J option is virtually covered by Jack and Danny already!
  10.
I wouldn't worry whether it's Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, or USA, Fender or Squier; Just try before buying really..... make sure you get the bass you want, and don't be seduced into something that's more expensive just because you want the "right" badge
Can't fault this logic at all

    Feedback for Wud

Another glowing report following my deal with Woody! I bought his set of EMG pickups and they arrived extremely quickly, beautifully packaged and exactly as described in his advert. A completely smooth and hassle-free transaction from start to finish. Highly recommended!
  12. Some pickups (particularly active EMGs) benefit from being very close to the strings.... not sure about the ones (Barts aren't they?) in the Elrick though...
  13.
I think he's saying he likes Jason Newsted's tone and Queensryche's bass tone on that record.
Oh right. Yes, on re-reading I can see that now...
  14. No, I don't take much notice of serial numbers I'm afraid - but the bass was certainly in immaculate condition. Like you say, there aren't many of these around - which is odd as they are extremely well made, great to play and very nice sounding. If five string basses were my thing (or I had more perserverance) I would still have it!
  15. To the OP: How long have you had that bass and where did you get it? It looks very like the one that I owned for a while and sold to Pinball on here.... It had a few previous owners too - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/177749-sold-beautiful-carvin-xb-75p-5-string-bass/page__hl__carvin It's a gorgeous bass with a fantastic range of tones and it is very playable - top choice, and certainly the best five string I ever owned. Sadly, I just found that five strings was not for me... Of course, if this is a different bass - forget what I just said!
Mixing different speaker sizes is mostly manufacturer bullshit. It can be done provided that you use crossovers to feed each size of speaker/design of cab with it's own range of frequencies, but running two different cabs both at full range leads to inconsistencies in the sound from frequency and listener position
All true of course... but in "real world" situations (i.e. on a stage or in a rehearsal room with a range of other musicians), would we (or anyone else) really notice the difference? Actually, thinking about it, the OP's experience would suggest that we might... Hmmmm.
  17.
I think it will need rewinding ,perhaps by someone like Bass Doc.
Or maybe the new Wizard (aka Hot-rod pickups)... Shouldn't cost too much for a full or partial rewind
  18.
Any sign of it yet? Some of us have money burning a hole in our pockets...
Oh well... looks like I might have to get some EMGs then...
  19.
Holding page on the way, and full site in the next week or two, also photographing some of our Bass product as we speak
Any sign of it yet? Some of us have money burning a hole in our pockets...
  20.
I tested the Supercompact. but my old Bergantino HT-112 ER is still superior in many respects, but this is just my opinion.
In which respects is it superior? Build and finish quality go without saying, but what else? I ask purely out of interest
  21.
Are Wizard pickups going to be back in business sometime?
So it would seem! There is another thread somewhere, but I can't find it... their new website should be live any time now. I think they have changed their name to "Hot-rod" or something similar... On FB - https://www.facebook.com/hotrodguitarparts
  22. Spector legend might be worth a look... A bit more than £200, but a lot of bass for the money.
  23. All Spectors are well-made, great-sounding instruments. The Korean models are outstanding value and can be picked up on here for less than £400. They look, sound and feel a lot more expensive than that!
  24.
The tone I love is Jason Newstead, queensryche on I don't believe in love etc...
Isn't that Eddie Jackson? When did JN play with Queensryche? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Jackson_(musician)
